How good is that top photo Tony ;) Are the clouds natural or were they a later addition? Whichever, its a beautiful, evocative shot.

:D :D Tony,  I grew up in a motorcycle club where I was the odd one out on a solo ;D We had a number of great sidecar teams that were all very helpful guys even to us solo riders.

Shelpi what do you have the bracing arm (the mind has forgotten it's correct title..) on the twin leader attached to? It should be back to the down tubes not on the shock bolt or lower swinging arm. If mounted in those positions when you apply the brake the front end will rise up with the transfer of the forces. Not good for the handling. I made that mistake on an earlier front end and it was pointed out to me, the fella bodged up a new STAY at the track for us, out of his spare bits and pieces in his trailer and fitted it up in the correct place. Made a huge difference. Perhaps it is in the correct spot but not visible in the photo.

Here is what I am bunging on about.  The stay on front brake goes back to the down tube. Naturally it is a floating fit, not solid.

Yep thats exactly what happened the first time we put the front brake on (and it hadnt even got out of the shed) we was in a curry in a hurry and had to go with it, :o got used to it plus no time to change always something makeing me freak out man, but in my opinion I think your front wheel likes it  :-X we have all the correct mounting specs but it will be an off season job ::) or maybe its now how we like it ;) 8) actualy I think it helps :o ??? :P :-X

Where are the Wally's on sidecars????  No32 maybe?

That’s Cliff Cook standing next to his bike in the red leathers with Yellow top. His long time passenger was Geoff Holmes who is standing next to him to the right.
The next bike is Ken Gordon’s #8 with my cousin John Steyntjes sitting on the sidecar guard wearing a blue top. John went on to passenger for Cliff and they raced in Europe together.

Most of these WA outfits from the Peter Kitchingham Photo Collection are still attending events. cheers A

Looks like Allan Hill and Mal McNaught. Allan bought a Wasp and made mild steel copies to get the sport going up here. Was quick and finished second in an Aussie title one year. Mal (r.i.p.)was the best passenger we had for a long time and could swing on anything from road racing to trials.
In fact Allan and Mal converted the old Wasp for vintage road racing and could slide it around on skinnies at Lakeside, much to the crowds delight.

I have always seen these motors referred to as 1000cc, A quick measure down the plug hole and across the bores through the ports says it's about 940cc and the other motor checks out much the same.
I have heard that the later air cooled engine with the kick start was closer to the 1000cc, perhaps just a bigger bore size.
Hopefully the little 940 should have enough grunt...

Walter may also be able to confirm theat there was a couple of different piston/con rod combinations used. At least one of my engines has EML brand rods in it with Mahle pistons 86.4mm.

And WTF is that clutch out of? An auto trans of some sort with the sprag in the back for starter engagement.

Well done Matt . That should turn some heads . A 1984 Jumbo EML . That should handle better than the 85 Mono and looks much better in my opinion . Make sure you get those brakes and arms  up to scratch first, before you ride it  . ;)
Sorry to question the wise ones but after all the reasearch we have been doing and went back over the World championships for EML it was like this wasnt it
Emil Bollhalder / Kar Buser - Yamaha- EML - 1982-83 twin shock
Hansi Bachtold / Fritz Fub - EML/Jumbo - EML 1984-87 mono shock

82-83 are very similar to '84 frame, only a few minor differences. The very last of the '84 twins hocks came out with twin tube girder style forks

Thanks Walter, it needs a new trenching implement on the rear, the one that is on it is shredded! not sure what I will do with the rear yet, 18" is the easy way out but not good for an original restoration. it has the steel hub (complete with broken spokes) from an earlier model so that would have to be replaced to keep it original

Cheers

Yep will do Shelpi, won't be much progress on this one for a little while unfortunately, I'm in the middle of moving house (interstate, again) and not having anywhere to store it, so in the mean time it stays in Dads shed. Besides, I still have other unfinished projects! Here is the new donk for the other '84 EML

If its steel , the wheel  must be around78- 80 . 82> they where Alu . I still have lots of spokes for the steel hubs too .

There is also a front swing arm and brake caliper off an earlier model in the box of spares. The guy I bought it off has a beautiful '80 EML YAM with an allu rear hub...
Other than the wheel, it's all there and complete dome to every last nut, bolt and washer. And the front guard may not be original..... ;D

Doesn't matter , you still done very well .  By the way the Yam looks good too . No Kroeber ignition ?

No Kroeber yet, I can't make sence of how to adapt one to 270°.
That old advance mechanism housing is only there for decoration, the trigger mechanism for the probe ignition is on the other side. When I get a chance I will make a blanking plate instead of that housing and it's leaky seal

Hi Hoony, yes the crank is slightyly different to standard 360 degree XS

Hi Hoony, yes the crank is slightyly different to standard 360 degree XS

can you explain a bit further 270, you have me interested. is the standard XS rod main pins 180 degree apart or are they inline firing differently? and how does the 270 work?

Hoony, the std XS fires as a Triumph but if you press the crank cheeks off and spin it, you can get it to 270 (277 actually) and make it fire like a twin/single (twingle :D) That way they get drive on every stroke like a thumper. That's the cheep way to do it and it's not exactly right. You can however make it exact if you have the means, which Matt obviously has, and they run even smoother.
It's a bastard of a thing to race against 'cause it sounds like a dodgy old 500 thumper but it hauls soooo hard out of slow turns.
There is an XS forum that will fill you in some more, go there for a look.
Title: Re: Sidecar MX pics - Post them up here
Post by: 270YAM on January 11, 2014, 12:36:52 pm
Yes as EML explains, the stock Yamaha is like triumph BSA Norton and any of the early parallel twins with both crankpins in line, both pistons rise and fall at the same time, but on opposite cycles. This results in an even 'firing order' with one cylinder firing every 360°.
The 270° rephase simply means that (in most cases) the right hand side of the crank has been advanced by 90° in front of the left. So instead of the original 360°/360°, it is now 270°/450°. The uneven firing gives the back tyre more time to recover resulting in better traction even though it sounds like 'smooth' power.
Road racers have been using this theory for a while, Yamaha's latest 'cross plain' crank design in the 4cyl R1 is just 1 example. Power is more manageable and it hangs on better in the wet.

The crank has a much better primary balance which kills the infamous XS650 vibration, so energy that used to be spent making vibration is now being sent to the back wheel. Free power!
Instead of accelerating 2 pistons/rods at full velocity and then having to stop then and turn them back the other way at the same time, there is always one piston near full velocity when the other is changing direction- top and bottom.

So we now have a parallel twin that sounds and behaves like a 90° V twin.

it sounds like a dodgy old 500 thumper
Where did you get that from EML?? it must only sound like that when you're behind it!
Title: Re: Sidecar MX pics - Post them up here
Post by: 270YAM on January 11, 2014, 12:43:36 pm
Also as EML says, the 277° is an easier and more common mod than the 270°.
The Yamaha crank is basically 2x complete 2stroke cranks joined together in the middle with a 13 spline. If you turn it by 3 splines you can achieve 83.07°/276.92° Crank offset. Close enough to the 90°/270°

Hoony here is some info on a production Yamaha 850 that came with a 270 phase. One of the few bikes I would love as a road bike. They sound so good!

Version History

The TDM 850 was arguably the first road-oriented "Adventure Tour" motorcycle. It was never marketed as an off-road bike, but as a comfortable yet manoeuvrable all-rounder, rather like the later Honda NC700X, CB500X, Kawasaki Versys, KTM SMT, and Ducati Multistrada. When designing the TDM, Yamaha are said to have used a lot of ideas from their "Morpho" project.[1] The TDM's engine was derived from the Paris Dakar winning Yamaha XTZ 750 Super Tenere. Yamaha intended to create a motorcycle capable of handling the mountain roads of the European Alps and coping with rougher road surfaces; and the TDM's "sit-up-&-beg" rider's position was radical in its day.

The TDM was imported into the United States for only two years, 1992 and 1993. It was never a big seller in the United Kingdom or in The Netherlands, but in other European countries (including France, Germany and Greece) sales were strong[citation needed]. In 1996 Yamaha released the Mk2 TDM with updated bodywork and a 270° firing order instead of the previous 360°. This modified engine was first seen on the Japanese market in 1995, when Yamaha introduced the TRX850. The 270° engine gave the TDM an attractive new "feel", and it now became a popular bike in the Netherlands, where for some years it was among the top 15 best-selling bikes.

In 2001 the 3rd incarnation arrived, the TDM 900, with new bodywork, a diamond-shaped alloy frame, a 6-speed gearbox, fuel-injection, R1 derived brakes, a reduced dry weight of 190 kg, a larger-capacity 900cc engine, and slightly wider tyres (160 rear, 120 front). It has a 2-position trip meter, a digital clock, and digital fuel meter. ABS was available as an option.

The TDM is classified as New Sports, a new category invented by Yamaha, comparable with "Dual Sports" or "Adventure Sports bikes". Although a TDM is too bulky and heavy for serious off-road work, its long-travel suspension is well suited for gravel tracks and light off-road use. Popular modifications include fitting aftermarket exhausts, "blue-spot" brake calipers, and dual-sports tires.

As s side  note somewhere amongst my well ordered parts I have a re-phased  crank and camshaft set for a CB754 used with other electrical mods to create a four cylinder twin..  Meaning 1and 4 fire together then 2 and 3.  No I have never put it together but will one day I should.

Hi Tim, the honda 4 motor sounds interesting,

The 4's are simple, just cut the cam in the middle and rotate half of it by 180° and install.
Don't even need to change the ignition as they already fire a waste spark with dual tower coils.
I had a Suzuki GS 750 like that in my '84 EML before I removed it and put it back to how it should be with a big twin.

Many manufacturers make 270° twins now, even the new triumphs and norton's have strayed from their heritage

270 when you mastered the batteryles ignition setup , I would be interested in a 998 cc 270 project . I reckon in period 4 road racing that setup  would be a contender. Is the 270 configuration also easier to start then a conventional  ?

Yes it should make a great road race motor, still no easier to start though!
Working on battery-less at the moment

Not sure of the top one, but pikky 2 is a Hagon alloy framed XS motored beauty. Not much good in the day but would love to have one now. Pikky 3 is a start in France, and 5 is from WA.
The last one is Conondale, the start of the 2 lap final for the National champs in '09 I think. Wally won the drag-race up the hill and despite tapping him a couple of times we couldn't get passed him and Steve Baker.

Looks like Dalby will be Sunday only for racing, however Sat avo will be some training sessions for budding monkeys, I mean passengers and Sat eve looks good for a sidecar video/DVD/Memory stick show and eats at the clubhouse.
Could tick a few boxes there.

Afair bit of work to get the Super 750 back to scratch Pop. It's all there and tidy enough but has sat in a shed for a few years so will need a bit of TLC.
I will prob set it up for sale as there's none about like it left and then put the effort into putting the chair on my old XTZ for some fun.

Pity your arse is so itchy Shelp.....Maybe it's worms.??

I have had an XTZ750 for some years now. That's how I go back into riding-doing some adventure rides, great fun. It's how I met Popeye actually. He was one of those mad bastards that does a 500klm adventure ride on the back wheel :D :D :D
This year I picked up another one, complete with a trials chair on it. It has an original 6820klm on it and was owned by an older dude that only rode it occasionally. Sat in his shed for years unused. So although near new it has some blemishes. and fittings for the chair. Nothing that can't be overcome.
My original old girl has sat for a wee while after she shat the elecs....common problem. Sent them to Beta in SA to get them fixed but got wrapped up in sidecars so it went on the back burner. I have USD forks and long range stuff to go on her when I get the inclination. Will most likely fit the chair to the older one and sell the low k one, maybe to a museum, it's that good.
