Title: Anyone else get sever errors, frozen pages on forum? Not bitching, just asking
Post by: Viper666 on April 08, 2013, 06:33:35 pm

For the past month or so I will be on here and click a topic or heading etc. and it just sits there. going nowhere.
I sometimes get sever 500 error.

Wait a few minutes & all seems fine then it will happen again. Roughly 3 or 4 times a session. I've tried using Firefox rather than IE but it also happens on my work computer. So different computer, different connection, different ISP, different IP address.

So Graeme are you trying to give me a message? ???

Or are we just on here too often and need to get a life? :D

If I was an IT nerd then I would say there are 2 issues:

1. Site hosting issues - most likely bandwidth coming into the data centre being choked (technical term)
2. Some shitty Internet connections of some of the forum brothers

Site issues are happening more frequently at my end as well but I know that the site owner does this for love not money so I just suck it up because the forum keeps me connected to vmx while I navigate another shitty work week (work sucks).

This i have had the frustration of dealing with, a tip is to make sure you hit the "copy" button every time before to press the "Post" button. That way if you encounter that server error when you attempt to post you will simply have to press "paste" in the dialogue box to have your comments back without rewriting everything.

Cheers, Brendan

If it is connected to site hosting issues it might be time we kicked across some funds to Graeme and keep this great site rolling.     Peter.

Internal Server Error 500
The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

Please contact the server administrator, [email protected] and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.

Think it's the same as Firko's message.

Not expecting it to change anything mate but it's probably time a few of us leaches made a donation as Pete (billetyz) suggested, we all appreciate you're time an effort put in to continuously provide us with this platform. Where can we find the details to make a donation mate??

I have put up with that error message for a couple of years, I had always put it down to my slow internet speed.

As for logging on, I have always had trouble logging on at the top of the page, always took a few tries to get in but logging on at the bottom of the page always seems to work better.

I did some site maintenance last night so that may have helped. I did find a database error that I can't fix, plus this version of the forum software is now really old. I know it is possible to upgrade but I've read up on it and it's beyond me (or at least, I don't have the enthusiasm to put the effort into it).

I am tempted to start from scratch with the latest version of the software, or even a different forum program. My host has a range of different systems available.  If I went to a different one, it'd still work much the same way so no big drama there, the only issue would be anyone's bookmark's or favourites but that's easy enough to fix. I *think* it's possible to port all member accounts across so no-one would need to re-register.

If I go down that track, I'd close this current forum off and keep it as an archive. That means that it'd still be able to be searched or read or linked to.

Alternatively, if there's anyone with a clue about this stuff that could help fix the database and upgrade the software, I'd be most grateful.

At this stage, I am looking for opinions.  Whaddya reckon?

Graeme you will do whats best i know  :) but the thought of letting this one go  :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( it would be like knocking down a blokes local  :o :o

Keeping it as an archive would be great , but hopefully someone a lot clever than me will have the answers to keeping this one alive  :)

Whatever the outcome thanks again for providing this great facility for us  :) its as i said before my bastion from the PC world  ;D
My wife is happy to contribute to maintence cost as being here keeps me from interfering in family life , apparantly her and the kids have that under control  ;D

Thank you all for the birthday wishes. So far it's been a pretty good day. I got a nice Google Nexus tablet as my birthday present on which I can download and read my online magazines and last Sunday I spent a day at one of the most enjoyable race meets I have had the pleasure of attending.

Now if anyone would like to make it even better, think about what you post. I really *hate* moderating and trying to work out the right balance of what's OK and what isn't. So, just because I asked nicely and it's my birthday, anyone who may have posted anything contentious today might like to reconsider if that was a good idea...
