Title: Bultaco front bake orient attain
Post by: jerry on February 22, 2013, 08:05:43 am
Is it just me or has anybody wondered why Bultaco chose to activate the front brake from the the throttle side. It makes for a tight radius on the poor old brake cable as well as compromised cable routing. I'm thinking of reversing the hub to achieve a less torturous path for the cable. Any thoughts! J

Reverse it if you can. I could never see any redeeming reason for the throttle side brake plate arrangement.

I thinks you get the award for the most interesting/confusing thread title  ;D

Yeah thanks for that Can Am. There's a lesson here " don't post early in the morning ". Still if others are curious it will interesting to see the feedback. J

Hey jerry ! ive been looking at that brake setup for a while ,there was a US import 125 pursang on ebay a while back that had the mod .the only thing i can see is the  brake the backing plate would be pushing the brake stay instead of pulling against it - maybe a steel or thicker alloy stay would be peace of mind ,would probably give better feel at the lever  :)

interesting!,Brads (090) ossa phantom has f/brake swapped to l/h side,i remarked about this to Brad,"thats how it was/came to me,& it works spoton" ,i could never get the small brake to work, maybe thats why it's moved over to the l/h side, the only diff is the fork oil drain plugs are forward,(forks are swapped over too),still having cafeeine hit so not sure about leading/trailing brake shoe operation atm ;D, :P

Yep..we do the same with a Husky...swap the brake onto the left side....as stated above..makes for a much more gentle arc on the cable...easy on a HVA as both legs are cast the same.....I think the works guys did it also back in the 70's....

Yes I had noticed you blokes were as hopeless as each other ;D

If you swap the brake to the other side wouldn't that reverse the braking action and make the bike accelerate instead?

Thanks guys you've suitably armed me with an inappropriate level of over confidence. I will send photos if it works (from home) or hospital if it does'nt. Come to think of it its not possible for the brakes to be even worse than before! J

I reverse all of my Maico front wheels....you have to make up a new stay (or find a Wheelsmith stay like I have) and possibly use a Yamaha cable, depending on the model. It can't be too hard to do it on a Bully surely?

I have thought about reversing the brake on my Mk7/8 for all the same reasons you have said,BUT,I think that when you do this on a Bully the brake arm ends up in a position that doesn't work. Jerry if you can get it to work,we will all definately copy it!  8):D

Just as Mark said use Yamaha Wheels that means back as well,
Then the Bully will stop,
Norm Fraser owned a Wreckers, Yamaha wheels were raided for most Fraser supported Bully's

I used to run the reverse brake mod on my Bultaco Hill Climber in the 70's. It worked well when you started rolling backwards.

You'd have to relocate the bolt on the brake plate for the stay arm to a diff position

Ok preliminary report. Changed the fork legs over (looks better already) have to fabricate a new brake stay arm and fit cable guide to it ala MK7 et al. Also have to swap over brake shoe pivot pin with brake actuation pin. Bit of machining required but a mate is a toolmaker. I reckon it will work. The cable will then run down the front of the fork the same as Mk7 but think mirror image. Let you know after test ride. Hope it doesn't pull to the left! Oh by the way this is on my MK3 Pursang. If it works out ok I will do my Jim Pomeroy Frontera. J PS will have to work out the "new cable length" hopefully I can get something off the shelf.
