The story so far ; last year picked up a 1984 RM500E in poor condiction for nothing from a nice fella at Meriwah, was there to swap a pee wee 50 for a yz 60. It was missing the rear wheel, shock was clogged with what I can only imagine as mud, swingarm was flogged out, but it had a bottom end rebuild. Off home we trundle, once home I measured the bore size in at 89mm, so top end was flogged out as well :'(. So off to Greg Ball engineering for a brand new sleeve(which he had to make from scratch) new STD piston kit. So Im back to a brand new motor with a little tidier ports, sent swingarm off to Franklin Engineering to rebuild the bearing housing and fit new bearings on the swingarm(which I'm still awaiting it's return, Phil is good.. but slow ::)) Now for the rear shock, I had found what I thought was a good fellow who knew shocks" Yeah mate I can rebuild anything" he got my shock pulled it apart then rings me up and says come get it I cant fix it and you owe me $90...F@@ken theif. Anyway there was a happy ending to the shock, a fellow member through myself a bone and said he could fix and true to his word he came through( A big thanx to Jas "Project D" a weath of knowledge and parts ;D)
All plastics are NOS from Suzuki Aust., as are any nuts bolts etc.( I've kept all parts bags for proof)except for fairing bolts I've changed them out to S/S allen key bolts. Also got a rear hub of Jas, which is being laced up at Chivo's here in Sydney, front forks full rebuild, front rim was in good condiction so just a new set bearings and brake pads for it. It has a full Pro-Forma system from Les at VMX Unlimted as well a new seat cover.
It's taken a little longer than I would have liked, but with kids, wife and with dirt track it's gets hard ( as I know you all have felt it)
Thanx

That bikes an 83 mate you can tell by the yellow fork legs on it.

Not having a crack at you mate im just stating the facts on that ebay page.
Looks like the frames been spray painted a few times over in black and yellow.
If it didnt have a badly damaged case id buy it at that price.

all jokes aside i do like RM500's, i have never ridden one (rode a RM465) but the RM500's look great. gotta love mid 80's big bore MXers

What do you all think is a fairdinkum price for this: '81 465X

Started twice since overhaul, and not ridden. Done as finacially practical using OEM parts as possible, not trying to be a NOS nut and bolt restoration. Yes it is mine, not really looking to sell, just want a fairdinkum idea of what it would be worth. Assume rebore, shock rebuild, bearings, seals throughout etc etc etc, a proper overhaul.

I am taking a stab in the dark here Between 7-8k Depends what someone wants to pay for one.
you have done a great resto job on it 8)
-
As great a bike as this is, getting anybody to pay more than 6k is no easy task these days. When a cr 500 84 model which is probably top of the heap as far as demand is concerned won't sell at 6k in the same condition, 5 to 6k in this market is more a realistic price. I knocked back 6k for my cr500 '84 as I wanted 6.5k going back a couple of years ago. If I'm lucky I will get 5-5.5k now. I've seen them passed in for less.
A pre 85 big bore should be worth 7-8k as we all know to get it looking like this but...
-
I agree, real nice resto, its a credit to you Adam. When mine is finished 5-6k is what thought it will sell for due watching other bikes and what they go for. The thing with CR500's is that they keep making them up to 2001, but the RM500 only had two years here in Australia(83/84) and three years in USA(83/84/85). The motor than went on to be developed into Quadzilla(LT500R), the KX 500 was another bike that production pushed on to 2004.

RM500 only had two years here in Australia(83/84) and three years in USA(83/84/85).
Pretty sure the Americans never recieved any 1985 model RM500s.
While Australia got 6 units, Europe got the rest of the fleet.

We got a few 85 RM500F"s in NZ as well and Canada got them as well as Europe.

Why do you guys think the market for pre 90 bikes has stiffed over the last couple of years? I'm sure the economy flatlining has some input and perhaps the huge rash of cheap imports from the USA has created an oversupply situation causing the market to level or drop. Even exclusive niche bikes like Rickman Metisse, CCM and other collector quality machines have dropped in price. Previously CCMs and Rickmans and 81 Maicos were like having money in the bank, earning 5%p.a. interest but not lately. What do you reckon?

Yep. A combination of those things, gfc, flooding the market with imports and just a general supply and demand thing.

Be interesting to see the # of pre95 bikes on the start gates at club level this year 8)

Cheap OS imports flooding the market, both through local "vintage" importers and US based exporters. You could also argue that prices are returning to a more realistic value and where actually overinflated pre GFC.

you still see bikes out there that are asking more than what we were seeing maybe 18 months ago. There was a ceiling around the 5K mark before but lots being offerred for more than that now.
And by the way - probably the nicest 465 I have seen - really nice - good job.
