Steve - Have a look here ... http://www.cafehusky.com/forums/vintage-left-kickers.63/ (http://www.cafehusky.com/forums/vintage-left-kickers.63/)
You may already know the site, but there is a great deal of info, including all the manuals etc.

Total strip down & rebuild    needed for this one Wayne .
Hopefully be  a nice, tidy rider.

That looks exactly the same front brake that Vince Strange used on his 83/84 huskys back in the day.

Try huskyjunk.com for a set of rims. They are making reproduction units and their stuff is A grade quality. They are also listed on ebay...

nice machine... 1. download the manual from the website and print it out so you have it on hand... ideal for reassembly. Buy a box of 6mm and 8 mm nylocks...resto is half done already :D

Phil at Husky parts is great, the website has all the stuff you need,

Mick at Bendigo Dirt Bikes is a husky nut as well and has lots of info and experience.

The motor will be like the 490, the handling will be armchair ride....

enjoy the build...

Funny you should  say that....... amongst all the new /repro bits I have bought so far  is heap of new fasteners incl  6 & 8mm nyloc stuff.

Progress slow over the past month ; but back into it again very soon .

Should be a tidy rider ;  to have a play on at vinduros  ;D

Do not see many of these XC500's about .

May be  that  not too many were sold in Aus ,  back in the day ? ?

 Regards ,

The XC was designed for the US desert market. big suspension, enduro gearbox but no compliance over here. only the WR's were complied and the CR's didnt need reg. so not to many xc's about.

a bloke i know was a husky dealer for a short period and his first demo bike was an xc like that one. it frightened the crap out of everyone!

once we tightened the engine mounts up and fixed a whole lot of little things it wasnt too bad to ride.

a bloke bought it off him and i can vividly remember him passing me in a ride (race) at the army base like i was standing still (probably was) then i found him half a k up the track staggering out of the bush where it had cartwheeled him into the scrub! :D

the look on his face was priceless.

a few of us converted our wr's by ripping the spacers out of the shox and fitting the long sliders and damper rods. 13"s of magic carpet ride...

My bike has an Australian Comp plate fitted   ;  worded  "3/83  XC500"   with correct, matching frame No on plate  &  bike  is fittted with longer travel XC suspension .
Previous owner did say that he had bike registered  .

Perhaps some of these  (XC) bikes were complied  for Aus market back in the day ? ?

Notice the Trooper Lu 1983 Husky XC 500 on eBay and Gumtree for $10k and $9.5k respectively. Guess they didn't get the memo about VMX bikes not selling for top dollar anymore  ::) ::) It's a nice bike but not worth anything near that price. Be lucky to get $5k I reckon. Never get your money back on the Resto ....but that's not why we do it  ;D

Dealers had blank compliance plates for Huskies and they would engrave the details them selfs when needed, I still have a blank one in my old tool box.

I like mine and seemingly most of the husky gurus here have reported similar feelings, might just be better than a CR500, but yes when cold can be a bit temperamental starting at times. Certainly not a daily ride bike, but great to go for a blast on to clear your mind, or to beat that maico brako on the track.

Any info on jetting specs from Husky XC/CR 500 owners much appreciated . (staying with 40mm Mikuni)
I had only a brief  ride  (around  factory unit carpark ) prior to purchase .
Bike started  easy enough but  will need more of  a boot with a fresh engine.

Start a thread on Cafe Husky vintage left kickers / restoration page. there are several 500 resto's going on with all the guff on how to tidy them up.... Husky parts .com has all the manuals so download the 500 one, print it out so you can work out where all the right nuts and bolts go... You will be on the seat ;D :D

The 500 Husky is a piece of cake to start if you fit a decomp device to the head and make sure it gets enough fuel by using a 55 pilot jet as a minimum. Anything smaller and it won't start without throwing some fuel down the plug hole!

For the 40mm carb Paul Rooney recommended
Slide - 2.5
Pilot jet 55 - 65
Needle AA0
Main 370  - 380
Float level 19mm

I run a 38mm carb on my 500 auto and it goes well. Have thought about trying the 40 for more top end but I figure I would only get more hurt!

Resto is looking good  :D

Thanks for the jetting tips .
I have not looked at carb yet.
The bike starts fairly easily ; 4 or 5 kicks cold  ; 1 or 2 warm;
New piston & rod kit  now here  so will be  starting engine rebuild  in the next week .

I thought...
WR's had black seats
CR's had Blue seats, and
XC's had Yellow seats

But of course only in 1983.

Steve, will you have her ready for Canowindra?

Interesting point Wayne   , re:  the  '83 Husky seat cover colours
I was looking through an old ADB mag  (Jan '83) with articles on '82 Czech ISDE  & noticed blue , black &  yellow seat covers on the white   (WR? )  Huskys pictured at the event  ???
Most of the  '83 (XC) models  (from what I have seen   old brochures ,pics , etc  ) have the Yellow cover.

My 500  won't be ready for Canowindra  so I will be on the IT490 for that one.

Bit of mud on the tyres now , out on a test run today.  ;D
Plenty of power / torque  but  smooth delivery for  a big 500 .

Bike ran clean  on the jetting I had decided on :
400 main (down from 440 that was found  fitted )
  50 pilot
  #2.5 slide
7DH3 needle  set at second clip from top (was set  on top clip  by prev owner )

Decomp valve is money well spent , makes starting  so much easier .
