I was wondering if any others out there have the same dilemma. I have a few bikes I know Ill never ride again. Do you keep them or sit on them as a investment
One example is my KTM 380 sx one of only 12 imported to NZ
-
have been there ,i sold about 25 bikes that just collected dust
kept 7 ,some i still ride and some for later in life
now i can go out to shed and do my thing
SWING CAT,S ;D ;D
-
Wish I had kept a few of mine - love to have my 980 model CZ250, my RH75 and my RM125S around. Would probably not ride the RH or the RM but museum restore them - the CZ I would hammer till the cows come home.
-
I'm going through the same dilemma now, would like to keep all 35 but I've run out of room and probably not going to get around to restoring all of them so time to move a few on and just keep the rare and trick ones..
In the past I've sold bikes that I wish I still had..
-
As you know fellows I have sold a lot of bikes over the years, I have 3 bikes now, the cost to restore bikes can be high, and i don`t have the work shop to do it myself so I am keeping 2 bikes and selling one, Bultaco Mk7 250, Bultaco Mk7 125. the little sherpa S need to go to a nice home.

Me too John....Although I'm glad I haven't got 35, I've still got 6 more than I can comfortably house so they'll be going once I make them fully saleable, there's nothing I dread more than selling a bike and it shitting out on the new owner. I'm keeping the exotica and selling the bikes that I have no emotional attachment to.
-
I dont like it when I know there are some great bikes just rotting away in sheds when they could go to good homes.
-
Yesssss
Way too many bikes in the shed for some of you blokes. I think you should sell 'em
Now you've decided to sell -
What you got?
Shhhh, email me privately coz I'll collect 'em... and I'll ride 'em
-
he who has the most win,s ! so more and more went into the shed .
then time become,s faster than you , what to do with all the bikes ?
enjoy the one,s you like to ride, sell the others to someone who
will do something with them,it will let more rider,s get out there
rather than letting them rust in the shed
-
Ive got 15 bikes plus a quad no way of selling no chance of riding all of them but allways looking to buy more.
-
Im seriously thinking of a cull but the prices that bikes are fetching now means they will stay in the shed for a while longer . Iain
-
I have put my 98 wr360 up for sale at the moment it is the only bike I have registered but I don't get to ride it at all.
I can't let some go and I don't care if I don't ride them I still enjoy just having them I gave my gt80 to my mate I haven't been missing it I know he is enjoying having it and I bought a mx80 to do up as I had one and I want to ride one around again.
They don't have to be doing anything to be enjoyed as soon as I figure I don't enjoy riding or having them though they are gone.
-
Looks like a lot of bargain basement bikes coming on the market. Yippee
-
I have about 11 bikes now, most in which I regularly ride. Cant see myself selling anytime soon.
I did sell one about 12 months ago, which was a full ground up resto - totally regret that!
-

They're not rotting, they are going up in value... And will come back out into the world in a lot better condition than they went into the shed!

Last five years as much as can positively remember ,sold 9, gave away 22+ ,had 17 that were restored totally destroyed in a shed fire. now have 6 left (3 of which are out at other residences). Add to that trailer loads of spares parts and spare parts wreckers have been sold or given away for peanuts. Yep the reality is one day you will see the obvious that you cannot do everything..... 8)
Do I regret losing all those ? the fire lost ones YES! the others, well sometimes. Cheers
Ahh yes that list above does not include my stupidly large 100/125cc Hodaka collection I sold/gave to Ray Ryan.
-

1. vic 500 + bikes he never rides them, they will be sold when he dies.
2. Vic 46 Greeves all pre 65 bikes, stop the pre 65 classes to grow
3. Vic 4 pre 75, 9 pre 65
4. Vic 30m by 10m shed full, varity of models. he will never do anything with them.
5. Vic 25+ yamaha

Guilty of hoarding a few old bikes
Sold off all the Jap bikes over the years kept all the Euro brands
Then brought the the complete Jap parts stock of a closing down wrecker ::)
I need HELP just keep buying not selling
My son gave me a tee shirt (He with the most toys wins ) :D
Cheers
-
Yeah, I'm hoarding some as well.
But no-one seems genuinely interested in buying the ones I want to sell anyway.... so until someone is ready to get serious, I will keep 'em. :P
-
For me, it's a balance of cash vs space vs emotional attachment.
If the bike isn't being used, the emotional attachment quickly wanes.

I have a Tshirt that says "he who dies with the most toys still dies"

Its a form of insanity.....Lock me up before I buy anymore.p

This is a problem, everybody has short arms and deeeeep pockets at the moment . >:(
I think some bikes were overvalued and local markets plundered by those importing container loads from the states.
so in the short term the bikes value has been denigrated.
I dont want to "give away " bikes but realize a small loss will be inured in the current money market, so I guess it is a matter of riding out the time .
of course the older everyone gets the less chance you have of selling older bikes as ride bikes and also most of us I suspect brought our bikes in a fairly buoyant market.
Interesting feed back so far as opinions are more varied than I thought they would be

Damn, I NEED to know someone like you .... they don't even have to be restored.
-
I agree with Nathan - the "should I sell my bike because I don't ride it" demon has started to creep in! But then the other one is - "mmm another bike to put in the shed would be nice"
-
I have a couple of restored bikes and a shed load of unrestored ones that i dont ride ::)
A problem im facing now is that the restored ones and to a lesser extent the unrestored ones do deteriorate . I dont have a nice showroom or even a nice office to put them in so what do i do ???
Add to the problem all those Gunna Gunna Gunna projects and it all becomes a pain in the arse instead of a pleasure .
Not to mention a shed load of memrobillia, riding gear, parts and accessories
Over the last 10 yrs i have lost a lot of mates my age to various horrible illnesses , if i tip over tomorrow whos gonna clean up this lot ??? it would be a bloody nightmare so i have to consider that too . I have always lived for today fork tomorrow but its getting to a time where i have to take a bit of responsibility :P
I have my favorite riders / racers so i should just keep them and ditch the rest :)
As has been said nobody wants to pay much for them now , will that change who knows ???
I will probably end up parting out quite a few as it seems easier to move them that way and scrap / dump what dont sell .
Yes the bulk imports have flooded the market but some of those guys are stuck with a lot they cant sell now ;D
As Firko said you dont want to sell somone a bike that shits itself first time out ( thats what the bulk importers are there for ) so i would rather part them out . Someone can always buy all the parts and build their own ;D but that way theres no missunderstandings ;)
This is another option im exploring

Everybody,... take a deep breath.... and calm down.
If you all sell your bikes now you will flood the market.

"Add to the problem all those Gunna Gunna Gunna projects and it all becomes a pain in the arse instead of a pleasure ." Thanks Bill you have the perfect summation there. Tim754

Dave proved that Victorian's are retentive. :-*

Yes, 500 + bikes, I didn`t pluck that out of the air, I have been in his shed and works shop, they come off the wall of the shed in threes, and they are all in a row at ground level. the total amount
would be 99% europeon. he may be passionate about bikes, its a sickness too.

I could not agree more!!!

Sounds like a real pile, better sell it to me ;D
A few years ago you could have made a case that hoarding bikes was making less bikes available to the VMX scene and driving up prices, but with the market having heaps of imports in it, the VMX scene has more bikes than riders these days, evidenced by softening prices that will probably never return. So I would say hoard em unless you need the money.
for me keepers = bikes that I am never likely to find at a price I can afford again
