I have always been a bit sceptic of these barn find come suburban myths, seen one tonight, converted to a beliver
I Reckon I have only seen the half of it. When they know what they want to do ill post some pictures up if they'll let me take some.
Farrkkkk.

fork me I wish you would put more effort into your words/ spelling/ English. Shits me having to decipher what you are trying to say. Of course I basically understand that there were some old expensive bikes found in an old guys house which is a cool find. Tell 'em you'll give them a grand for the lot.
-
sounds good to me, go for it
-
Best way is to sell them on their behalf and take a percentage as you know what they are worth and how to market them...
-
They are out there still I am onto a few at the moment but you don't count the chickens before they hatch.
I am in a good job for finding stuff work in so many houses and talk to so many people some of the stuff we see is amazing some stuff your not interested in but others would die for.
That is how I found my charger we rounded a corner we had been around so many times before it would be 100's of times but for some reason I was looking out the side of the window a direction I had never looked before and there it was jaw drop moment next day went and spoke to the old bloke took a few months but I got it. :)
I'd never do the wrong thing by some one but there are heaps that would take an advantage of situations like that freaky tell them that they are worth a bit now and tell them what you reckon you could get and see what they are happy to sell them to you for so every one is happy.
-
Will I'm going to put that too them brad but was thinking of asking them what you want to archive and ill guarantee that . You keep all the money from sale and I get to keep one of the bikes. :D
I think the best way to market them specially with the crated ones would be to drip feed them to Shannon's or one of the big auction houses and get world wide coverage. I only have A ruff idea but conservatively they would have to be worth 20k each even in a soft market, so based on the 10, I could make out its going to take some serious money handling and I don't wanna be messed up in that
So do they want to document what they have and keep a record of it ???
-
i was helping a mate sell some stuff for a mate of his.it got all to hard after selling 3 bikes i just gave up it was costing me money and i was not getting anything in return.they still have all the bikes sitting in the garage.
jim
-
I digress with you Jim, a mate has just gone through the same.....sorted out the shit, got buyers for most of the expensive stuff (where talking 25K items) and when he wanted to buy something for a fair price basically got a kick in the teeth. The worst thing is people keep feeding them bullshit about what stuffs worth.....it might have been 3 or 4 years ago but not now. Good luck freaky.

Spot on Joan , theres always plenty of pricks with opinions of what everythings worth ::) and of course same pricks have no intention of buying anything >:(
Its the same on here and other forums ( and i admit im as guilty as anyone else of it ) when some poor sod has somthing for sale or post a link to somthing for sale. There they are rubbishing the fork out of it while having neither the intention or the means to buy it ::)
In saying that Freakys barn find is probably not worth a lot in real terms ;) ole freaky when hes buying its worth fork all but when hes selling its gold plated platinum ;D

I recently became aware of a pretty serious barn find of a pair of holy grail Maicos. This pair had literally been sitting in a horse barn since the seventies and needed total restoration. I made what I considered a fair market value offer for both of them through a third party but the seller knocked back the offer, believing that they were worth quite a lot more. I suspect that this was one of those situations where people had been pissing in the guys pocket, telling him that he was sitting on a gold mine and that they were worth serious money. They might indeed be worth the big dollars in restored or even running condition but as they were they were 2.5k bikes tops (each). Sadly, the bikes will probably sit for as long as it takes for their owner to realise that the prices on pre '75 bikes have flattened and won't be rising to his expectations any time soon.
Sorry for being so cryptic about the bikes details but I was put onto them them by another forum member and I don't want to spill the beans without his permission. :-X

I've seen it happen on this forum... I offered what I knew was a fair amount on a ~$3k bike. Got knocked back with a slightly tetchy tone, and the seller advertised it for a grand more "because the gurus said that's what it is worth".
Then the price dropped progressively until it sold on EBay for almost exactly what I offered.
But apparently I was the stooge by offering a quick, no bullsh sale?!
That said, forums are a crap place to sell good/running/non-project bikes.
I've lost count of the number of times I've failed to sell stuff despite hitting all o the old bike forums hard. Put 'em on eBay, and you'll get a sale (often before the auction ends...).
???

i had listed the bikes that i could see under the stuff TM bill but removed my original post thinking alittle more about it and describing the guys circumstances. Butto put you in th picture there are a few Mike hailwoods, goldstars and SS900/750 still in original frazer crates and grease paper, and im talking multiples of the same model...............
Freaky i was only fishing for a bite ;D in all seriousness if they have been stashed away for years it will be great if they are brought out into circulation for the world to see :)

Wow, what an awesome list :o :o. With those bikes still in crates you're talking global market there Freaky, not small local stuff.
You (or the sellers) might want to consider involving one of the big auction places to maximise exposure and potential price.
I have a friend that has been tasked with a similar thing (when the time is right) to do however we are talking sheds full of museum quality classic bikes. My response to him upon learning that it was to all fall on his shoulders is the same I've given you .... get professional help.
Good luck with it all.
-
Freaky, it will probably pay to keep your mouth shut about what there's two of... ;)
-
I reckon Simmo might be right. Most heavy hitter collectors are in Japan Europe and the US where these things could be gold. They may take a hefty fee but there's a reason most of the high end stuff goes through specialist auction houses.Anyway good luck with it,looking forward to the pictures.

Yeah that's them Paul, I believe the seller's cbeen fishing for a while. I reckon they're worth $5000 for the lot but he seems to think they're worth twice that. What he doesn't seem to understand is that the glory days of getting big money for 501's was 10 years ago. Sure I'd like one but to be frank 501's have never been one of my priorities. I'm happier with my oval stuff.

The most annoying bit about these situations is knowing how it will end:
1. Bikes stay ther forever (current owner gets no money, people who want the bikes don't get them)
OR
2. Current owner relents and sells them at a sensible price to someone else (wastes everyone's time).
I've probably mentioned this before, but here's a story of three mates to illustrate how people's brains don't work properly:
Jem had a rally car project that had stalled, but he hadn't quite given up on.
Tim offers him $3k, cash in hand, gone the next day.
Jem says No.
After a while, watching Jem's enthusiasm wane, Tim offers the same money again and adds "If/when you want to get rid of it, give me a call.
Jem says No again.
Mark offers Jem $2k. Half up front, the other half at some vague, undetermined time in the future. Will pick it all up at some vague, undetermined time in the future.
Jem says Yes.
Mark gives him the first $1k a week later, and three months after, the car is still sitting in Jem's rented shed, and he still doesn't have the rest of the money.
Tim has the shits.
Contrary to what you might think, Jem isn't brain damaged and is/was better mates with Tim than Mark.
For as long as I live, I don't think I'll ever understand WTF Jem was thinking.
Best I can come up with, is that Mark got him at the right time.

Hoarders are not sellers ( most of the time ) Lots of people think just because some guys has a bunch of old bikes that he has no real attachment to he would be keen to sell them.
Yeah there always sort of for sale but normally they want far to much.
I had a few great barn finds over the years I purchased 2 x YZ A 250 for $300.00 and another time yet another YZ A 250 that was under a house for $600.00. I did one time find this guys out in the back blocks who had sheds full of good gear and with some idea of its worth back in 90's In the end I purchase an almost new condition CR 125 plus a ute full of parts that was enough to build another 3, I also bought 2 x Montesa 125 from him. To this day I'm still pissed that I didnt buy the 75 RH he had, sadly at the time there was no real reason to buy it as I only wanted race bikes pre 75. I think he wanted $3.5k for it. I rang again 5 years later and he sold everything by then.

No it didn't get that far. It's funny, I've been told of this 501 stash by a couple of different forum members over the last couple of years and have made offers on both occasions, yet the bloke is still sticking to his guns. Quite frankly I don't care what he does with them but it would be nice to see them restored by someone who appreciates them. He really needs a reality check as to their true 2013 value.
I'm not such a good example of someone willing to sell up myself but since I've been sick I've realised that I've got some seriously good race bikes that I'll unfortunately never be able to race myself. With that in mind, I'll be seriously thinning the herd throughout next year to-1: raise some cash flow, 2: clear up some much needed shed space and 3: see the bikes I built used for what they were built for. I don't want to see them rot away from lack of use in my back shed like these 501 Maicos. My TM/TS 250 Suzuki VMX project bike is fully restored but looks like shit from sitting in storage for 10 years and some of the other bikes are in danger of going the same way if I don't get them onto the market within the next year or so. I love building the bikes and won't stop doing that but the bikes that aren't being used need to see action under new bums.

Been going down that road for awhile now Mark. The part about increased cash flow is a bit hmmm :D Still some of my collection of bikes and parts appear regularly at VMX and Speedway meetings and that is so pleasing. Cheers Tim754

1:Our RH story the same as this,I believe some unknowledgable hoarders just want to get the most info about the bike/s and then do nothing at all.Farmers are the worse for this :-X
2:Keeping your last will and testament upto date also hopefully guarantees they end up in the right place.
cheers

That is more logical than your previous comments on the topic, Wasp.
Although, I still see a contradiction - a real enthusiast wouldn't want to see them crushed, while a businessman would not want to see them crushed while their value exceeds the scrap value.
-
Fair enough.
I bought The Boy a PW50 tonight. Could have had it for $400, but she seemed desperate so I gave her $450 - I have no problem screwing down the greedy and the stupid, but I knew the $50 meant more to her than it meant to me. *shrugs*
Then I wondered if she went to buy drugs, and the warm inner glow disappeared pretty quickly.

* Back in the early 80's I was visiting a drag racing mate in Cowra, NSW and he took me to a local farm to check out the guy's "old dirt bike collection". He wasn't home so we took a peak in his barn and I saw at least 80-100 British and Spanish dirt and road bikes. I can remember seeing (amongst other stuff) three Bultaco M11 (Metisses) in a row and a red pre unit Triumph Metisse. There was even a Honda 450 twin MX sidecar, something I found odd as there isn't any sidecar motocross in NSW. Not long after I lost touch of my "friend'' in Cowra when he went to gaol for dealing and never saw him or that farm again. I wonder if that stuff is still there?
* Which reminds me of the king of hoarders, Anthony Suttor from Eucharina, near Orange, NSW. Anyone who's ever been to his sheep property will know I'm not exaggerating when I say he'd have over 100 Bultaco's. Anthony was a regular racer and ran a fibreglass and upholstery business for the VMX industry called Vintage Dirt and was one of the sports real eccentrics. Unfortunately Anthony had a falling out with the sport that nobody understood but him and he faded from the scene. While I like Anthony and his lady Jennie, it bothers me no end to know that these bikes are being kept in a shearing shed and barn and nothing is happening with them.
-
They're around aren't they. A mate of mine knew a bloke out Wagga way who had a few old houses full of various road and dirt bikes from the 70s/80s. I think the guy ended up selling off a few or maybe most of them? I did meet him once but the memory is pretty vague now, not even sure where he lived. Makes you wonder just how many there are floating around. Some here may recall a story on telly not so long ago about a bloke who has about 100 old 70s muscle cars in a shed up the Gold Coast or somewhere.
-
The ones that really bother me are the "Bogan Pickers"
Guy comes to my shop scoping everything there but telling me how clever he is buying and selling CX500 Honda parts. Anything he buys from all the various Allclassifieds and Gumtree's he wrecks back out to make money.. Never begrudge people making money but when he runs into a a Bultaco barn find it is all getting stripped and and sold.
Some may say whats wrong with that ..and I guess there is a point to having spares available facilitated by him but.... he is a germ...
Slowed him up a bit and made him think when I told him the Tax department are marrying eBay sales profiles to people and making home inspections to check GST compliance etc on these so called small businesses...
I guess to point to my rant is there is an undercurrent of trolls on the sales network that make the celebration of a "Barn find" a more rare event..... ;)

Guys,
I just "discovered" these two old girls in a shed In South Auckland. They don't mean much to a linkage bloke like me.But I can pick them up for the equaivalent of a crate of beer and twenty donuts (which the current owner can get through in five minutes)...what do you think??Or are they better off at the scrap dealers yard?
;D

Forget the scrap dealer,Take them down to your local Marina and sell them as anchors :D ;D :o
