New or Second hand?
How many acres?
-
I was in the mower industry 15 years ago, the locally produced Rover Rancher, Greenfield & Cox were always good.
Of course Honda, Kubota and Cub Cadet were the best but more expensive. Stay away from the cheap US imports, they are rubbish. EG MTD, White, Yardman, Husqvarna and some of the low end John deer. You will know when you look at them, they all look the same with a different paint job.
-
Jim, Carlos buys and sells them all the time, I'll give him a call.
-
I bought a new Kubota G1800 ( 3 cyl diesel 4ws ) in 1997 and it's still going strong and it will see me out.
This is it's smaller brother http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Kubota-GT-1050-Ride-on-mower-/251173144677?pt=AU_Lawnmowers&hash=item3a7b160865

NEW
3 ACERS GRASS
2 ACERS BIKE TRACK
-
3 acre Grasstrack & 2 acre Speedway track :P
Talk to Slakewell Jim, you need both of those plus a slasher for the tractor.
-
so most that are 18-23hp 42-50in cut are ok
husky
cub cadet
cox
????
-
Husky is another cheap low end product. For the area you have you need as sliderulz said a tractor with a slasher for the bulk of it and a ride on for the smaller areas. You really need to look at a secondhand larger Kubota or even a Toro. Something like the G1800 oldfart has would be good.
To mow the whole lot with a ride on it would take you forever plus a ride on wont cope with long grass, it will break belts constantly.
-
Jim,
I've got a Cox 11 1/2 hp and it's good for about 1/2 an acre. You can't let the grass get to long/thick. For a couple of acres I would go for the 18 hp wide cut at
the very least. My neighbour has just upgraded from an 18 hp tractor type to a John Deere turn on the spot type and loves it! Says he would never go back to a tractor type mower.

And when you get it all mowed right, Mark will bring the Hagon up to do the edges, only the outer edges of course. ;D
Jim, I've got a contact at the John Deere dealer in Silverwater, when you know what your after let me know.
How's it all going Mark?

3 ACERS GRASS
2 ACERS BIKE TRACK
She will grow tired of the mowing thing very quickly. Trust me been there.
Mowing isn't fun. For that mount of grass you will be hard pressed to get anything under 5K that will do the job
Big zero turn mowers are fine for mowing large areas with heaps of trees but completely useless for anything else? The absolute ducks nuts for that size property is a John Deere X595. Mid deck 4WD. 24hp 3 cyl diesel.200 hr service intervals. You can fit a slasher out back and a bucket on the front .You can tow a full size trailer full of firewood with it. I paid $15,500 for it new 8 yrs ago and just sold it a couple of months ago for $ 10,000. So if you look at it that way you can own the absolute best thing for the job and do it so easy for approx $5,000.

You could buy an '84 KX500 for 10k

i have read they use kawa engines for lawn mowers now
-
I have a ride on for the front half and get a slasher in when the back half needs doing ($150 a time). I bought a new husqvarna. I won't buy another.
-
I've got a John Deere L111 for around the house, it's been good except the deck is weak if you hit rocks and stumps. Parts are cheap.
For larger paddock I would find an old MF or other tractor with a slasher. Be suprised how handy a tractor becomes once you have one and they are fun to drive.
-
Price is a good guide
The best we had on the SWB were the bigger Toros . The worst were the 16 HP victas. (Yankee Email crap).
If you want a really good ride on, it will cost about the same as a small car.
Some of the other big name ones are also crap.
A tractor/slasher combination works exceptionally well on level ground and if the blades are sharp cut as well as a ride-on. If you buy an old tractor make sure it has a double clutch other wise danger lurks.
Lever steer zero turn things are pretty good once you try them.
I do a bit of mowing with a Dixon zero turn thing with a 20 HP Honda. Its pretty good and reliable but it has its limitations on slopie ground if the grass is a bit wet. The wheels are too small in diameter and won't respond by pulling back on one lever to turn, you need to accelerate the outer wheel to turn. Gets hairy going down hill towards the dam. So far I've got soaked once, hit barbed wire fences twice, and slid right of the seat once and ended up on my bum in a gutter.
All good fun, just like the old days riding at Moorebank scrambles. >:( Cheers pancho

Try a couple of goats and or some roundup for the unedible stuff then you only have to ride ;D
