Thanks to a couple of forum members I am about to take delivery of a mk 2 Hagon Jap 500 sandracer. Complete with spare barrel, crank cases and bits and pieces plus a trailer. A big thankyou to Jim "super snoop" Garvey and Foss for the tip off.
Ya gotta be quick!! ;D
regards Mark
-
The quick or the dead.
I want to see a GC replica out of this.
-
Slides,
It's the later model than GC's. The sub frame and down tube are different.
I was pretty keen on going for the Hagon blue. Might go for #41 though or #29
Dunno yet. regards Mark
ps the dust has nearly settled ;)

No offence meant Mark but please don't go yellow.
I've seen a photo, interesting colour scheme, I hope the engine plates are painted and not annodised?
-
Won't be going yellow Slides. Hagon blue with white fibreglass.
Yeah it is a little interesting as it is. White frame/glass, purple engine mounts and a couple of bits of YELLOW here and there. If the mounts are anodised I'll make new ones . I presume you got a sneek look from either Foss or Jim.
Regards Mark
-
And a big thankyou to Jerry for getting you onto this site! Jerry

At least it's gone to a good home, not being sold on !! Don't forget Antig still lists parts for the Sandracer in their cattledog, KP got a set of forks from them, same as.
Foss

foss

Regards Mark

When I look at that good lookin' gear I wonder to myself how the hell can we let the chookies get the lap record at Nepean???
We need to train up some proper old fashioned short circuit riders out of the up and coming younger brigade!
cheers pancho.
-
After getting an astronomical electicity bill yesterday, the freakin' power has been off most of today, so here we go with Mark's or should I say Pancho Villa's, " He was a Mexican bandit, wasn't he ?? " new toy acquired in an across the border raid !! ;D
(http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/JAP454/MarksHagon2.jpg)
The colour scheme on the bike and the trailer are interesting to say the least !
Foss
-
Thanks for that Foss,
She's a beauty ain't she! Trailer and spares etc. included.
I'm as happy as a pig in shit! Pick her up tomorrow from, guess where Slides,...
SEYMOUR. Got our power bill the other day as well Foss, it's gone up 100% WTF.
Went from $500 to $1000. The joints F##@%%$d
Mark
-
Great stuff, Slider, bloody hell, Seymour huh ?? Nearly gotta be # 41 then doncha reckon ?,
Hey Slides, can you get that DVD copied ? as it's got the tribute to GC in it, I've gotta go to Bathurst to get it done, Mark may want a copy.
Foss
-
Yeah no prob, I'll have to find it first.
Seymour keeps bobbing up.
-
Yeah, Slides, it certainly does, I'll post Mark's Seymour pix soon.
Foss
-
Well fellas',
The Hagon is in my shed ;D with a lot of spares. I,ll have to pull it down and rebuild but everything is there. The frame is in top nick and with a spit and polish the motor will look like new. New tyres,re-chrome the front wheel and handlebars etc . Fix the engine mounts, new seat and grips and away we go!
Called in to Granite Park Raceway on the way home and drove around the track.
Took some pics. The track is rooted. It's a BIG BIG track, shit we must have been going pretty fast back then.
Cheers Mark
-
Good news , Mark, I'm glad it got there safely.
How long is it since you've had a Hagon JAP in the shed ? feels good,ay? I don't fire my Hagon TT up too often, but it's bloody good to have it here, I do kinda wish it was an Elstar, but believe me, it'll do !!
Are they standard Hagon bars on yours ? or are they alloy ?
Foss
-
Great news Mark and give it a cuddle tonight for me.
Who do we have to speak to about getting Seymour going again?
Seems like a huge shame to me.
2013 OZ Classic DT Titles, # 29 - Mark Eastham?
-
Foss,
I reckon it would be at least 30 yrs since I sold my Hagon and I'm not sure about the bars because I keep looking at the motor!!
Slides,
You would need someone with a LOT of money to get the track back in shape but it sure would be a great thing if it did happen.
Mark
-
Could this be yours Mark?
Confusing thing is that the frame is red, looks like Nepean but not sure what year, maybe 72.
P.S. It may be an Elstar, on second glance the tank looks Elstar. Probably not yours but a good shot of GC anyway.
-
Geez, I forgot all about this thread! i'll have to organise some updated pics of my JAP.
Great shot of GC in the pits Steve. Sorry to say it's not my old bike. That is an early
GODDEN I reckon '71 or '72. The sub-frame, rear guard, tank and front hub etc. are
dead give -aways,.....not to mention the color ;)
cheers Mark
-
Yeah the sub frames were looped on the Elstar, I wonder where this one ended up?
-

Bugger the slider.....that's a cool looking '65 Dodge Pheonix, I wonder where it ended up?.......(and if the owner would like to buy my 426 Wedge motor) ;D
-
That Godden JAP is worth chasing Slides. Quite rare the early ones. I reckon one of the Poms might have brought it over
for the early Test series. The main differance from the later model is the sub-frame. See if you can pick it.
What's your thoughts Foss?
Regards Mark
ps. It looks to be the same year that GC won at Seymour.
-
In my opinion , GC's bike in that shot may be an early Elstar, bear in mind, though, there was a crossflow of ideas in the UK Grasstrack world. The tank and seat on GC's bike is definately Elstar plus not all Elstars had a looped A frame, the wheels look wrong for an Elstar as do the fork gaiters, here's the shot of my Elstar/ 84S.
Foss
And guess what it's wearing on the back wheel, a bloody K70, must have been getting ready for a Temora meeting ::)
-
The bike in the photo with the Dodge is almost certainly an Elstar according to my mate who knows such stuff and I agree with him.
-
It's probably a bitsa but the tank is def Elstar thats the first thing I noticed, I wonder if it's before the Hagon that Mark ended up with or after. If it's after then that photo would be just after he returned from England in 73.
I'll forward the photo to Ray and see if he can shed some light.
-
That's a sweet Hagon JAP that Slider 29 picked up, but I hope 1: Mark paints the frame the correct blue and 2: paints the trailer anything but the Passion Pink it is now ;D.....
There's still a lot of bikes out there if you're prepared to go picking for them. An old mate from Condo rang me the other day about Maico stuff and the conversation got around to whether he still had his Elstar JAP dirt tracker and Jawa speedway bike. Not only did he tell me that he still had the bikes, he reckoned that there were another half dozen similar bikes still in the district "not doing much". I'll look a bit further into the situation after Easter, even though I'm not that interested in owning a slider, there may be something there for someone.
Back onto JAPs, Jonesy recently bought a sweet 4B JAP fitted with Alfin big fin barrel that'd been destined for a Cooper race car. The original owner had given it to another friend to rebuild but five years later the bloke had never come back to pick it up. While Alan didn't exactly get it cheap, he paid an honest price for an engine that'll now replace the totally locked up 4B in the Rotrax speedway basket case he's owned for 20 years.

In regards to GC's bike,.... yeah alright it,s an Elstar tank ;) BUT it,s a Godden rear guard so there! :D :D
But I would like to refer you gentlemen to page 32 d/t images,reply#471. hmmmm makes you wonder.
I know the Poms brought a lot of stuff over early on. Have a good look and see what you think
cheers Mark
-
I think you're dead right, Slider, the seat IS a Godden, it's a fair bit thinner than the Elstar and it looks like the rest of it , except the tank, is Godden too, fork gaiters an' all, an' all
After evidence from an expert witness, I rests me case M'lud !!
Foss
-
So it's a Goddstar, or an Eldden?
I'm confused but that aint unusual.

Naah, Slides, just a early Godden with an Elstar tank, have a look at the pic Slider talked about CDTI, p 32 post 471, you'll see what he means !
Foss
-
M'lud, after consulting Victoria's foremost technical expert in this matter, fresh evidence has come to light, I beg leave to present it to youse.
This is from DG's 1972 cattledog and, I think , proves the point that GC's bike in that shot, IS a circa 1972 Godden Grasstracker with what appears to be an Elstar tank.
The reason the wheels looked wrong, to me , is that it has a disc rear brake and a full width front hub, as the cattledog states, REH hubs were an option that year.
The 1976 Godden catalouge shows the later distinctive Godden drooping rear A frame and REH hubs as standard.
Foss

Bloody hell Foss,
After our little chat last night you must not have been able to sleep!! 3.33 am ffs ;D
Firko, the trailer was painted blue as soon as the bike was taken off. I'm not kidding.
If I had left it nipple pink/purple nurple I would have had Alvin(Dave) sniffing around.
He would have loved it for his SC500. As for the color of the Hagon,...the white looks pretty
good now that most things have been tidied up but it will be HAGON BLUE and white guards
I was going to take some pics to HBBB to show you how it's coming along. Next time.
regards Mark
ps.#41 Slides? :)
-
Just been sent some pics of a Godden and its got the same tank as the one pictured with G.C.

Photo on behalf of Mark, sorry I haven't put the others up but for some reason Tinypic won't let me.
I'll try again later.
-
Thanks for that Slides,
Still a work in progress but she's looking pretty good.
Well,......whatdya reckon blokes?
regards Mark
-
She's looking pretty fine I reckon Mark, almost ready for Temora?
Looking at that photo just now I think painting the guards to Hagon Blue would really set it off, a reverse of the standard colour scheme, a lot easier than painting the frame.
-
Yeah, beaut bit of kit, but as that old bird used to say on the inventors, "Does it come in blue"
cheers pancho.
-
Yes Pancho,
It will come in blue/white guards. Still have to polish the rear engine plates and straighten the forks.
-
looks good mark be good to see it in the flesh at temora the engine plates anodised or something different way u got it done but great bit of kit.
AL.
-
Regarding the engine plates Al,... they are anodised. I don't like them so I am going to de-anodise them
back to natural alum. and polish them. I have already done the front ones and they came up a treat.
I just soak them in a water /Drano solution and bingo,......back to natural. Then polish!
Thanks for the comments by the way, I just love the old girl. Something about a Hagon JAP.

Looking good Mark. :-X
-
It looks like an Airfix model kit waiting to be assembled. Good to see another one ready to come back.
-
Getting there, Mark. Gunna look great when it's finished !
Foss

You may have noticed that the gearbox is missing. All of the gears on the layshaft are rooted thanks to sitting in moisture for 30 yrs. Might have been condensation sitting on top of the oil which was more like
tar with a shovel load of dirt thrown in.
My mate Ant did an amazing job on the frame components. The paint was 2 pack, the same that is used on Kenworth trucks. It looks too good to use. The finish is like glass.
cheers Mark
