Nothing very exciting, just thought I'd better show you guys I was doing something other than asking stupid questions.
Frame has been sandblasted and repainted, triple clamps sanded and painted. Steering and swingarm bushes and bearings replaced, forks and shock rebuilt, new seat foam and cover, fork legs and swingarm very slightly blingerized(tm).
Thanks again to all those help with my queries.
-
how nice do you think that lawns gonna look when you get that thing going?
nice stuff champ!
-
Thats a work of art - Looking better than new!!! you might feel guilty taking that museum quality machine into the dirt...
hey let us know when we can come over and practice starts on that crappy lawn. ;D
-
Have you moved to NZ ? Bike is looking good. QVMX meeting at Pauls!!
-
My wife has already warned me about excessive test riding!!
Thanks for the comments, although both the bike and the lawn come up better in photos ;D
-
looks very nice, keep posting updates as they come about
-
Looking good mate! How big is your water tank! our law in dust!
-
Another couple of shots, not too much has happened to the bike although I have been collecting bits.
The pipe and motor are just in so I could work out dimensions for the MacGyver style muffler I made.
I thought given the plastics discussion happening in the other thread I'd show the Concourse Parts front guard I received on Friday. I don't think you could ask for a better product.

an update, nothing too exciting. It's good to have it rolling again though.
Holeshot buddy ripped apart the two and a half engines I gave him and has managed to find enough bits to build one decent one. Cylinder and head are in at Serco getting bead blasted, rebored, and a mild port job done. Also a crank kit was needed, apparently an RD250 crank is the same? we shall see.
Anyhow, should have an engine back in it within a few weeks.

so now you can sit on it in the shed and go Brmmm! Brmmmmmmm..........!
coming along nicely Paul, when your bike looks as good as that, it should see your return to the mx fold is, {dare i say it?} triumphant!
keep up the good work mate!
-
dont you just love putting a newy painted frame on the bench and locktighting all the goodys back on. take 3 steps back to the beer friage open a cold one .then back in to it.I think it as much fun as raceing.
-
Thats a mint job Paul, did you get an aftermarket seat foam? If so where from and how much? I need one.. Once i get mine to a similar stage i will post a pic or 2! Probably wont be as nice as yours, but still neat. Is Your tank new?
-
Vandy, I've been making triumphant engine noises in the shed since the rear tyre went on without any knuckle flesh under it. I hope the suspension is a bit softer once there's an engine in there, otherwise my bits are in for a hammering.
D Veda, yeah, the re-assembly is a big thrill, probably to be tainted when I come a cropper the first time!! I love opening the boxes of new bits as they arrive (especially if they came in under the radar) ;).
MXM, the seat foam was made up from scratch by a bike upholsterer up here in Brissy. From what I saw of his work before it all got put together it was pretty impressive (pretty much hand carved), but how it holds up to the real world I'll have to get back to you.
-
Looks like he has done a good job mate, i will get the local moto seat guru from our way to have a crack at doing one for me.. fingers crossed it will be good!
I got all the bits i need from the guy you reccomended this morning, what a legend.. Was all too easy! Thanks for that. :)
-
no worries, I don't bother with any of the other bike shops now, even though he's an extra hour drive for a round trip, it's more than worth the effort.
-
not a huge mount of progress since last time. Wide footpegs, nos brake and throttle cable, got some bits back from the platers, and of course the rebuilt engine. Had all the machining done by Serco, chased up the required bearings etc, and then had it reassembled by the Russell the tame genius at HSB racing services.
About 90% done on polishing the tank using Leith's techniques as per VMX mag, and is coming up a treat. Tank stickers are just sticky taped on so I could get a photo ;D

-

-
^^
did you read that Paul?
here's hoping the inside of that motor doesn't look like Rusty's hair :-\

I am at that stage with my HL500, mint motor, everything is new and shiny, Foxy Forx look mint, the joy of it all.
-
Cheers guys, sorry just got the phone back on this arvo (and the power last night). Everything else is ok but some of the surrounding suburbs look like a bomb hit.
Mr Vandy, I have to keep my hair neat, cause I'm already an XL helmet size, if I let the hair go , I'd have to wear a bucket! and now that you mention it, there were some unidentified (till now) blond tufts sticking out of the carb :o :o
-
two steps forward, one step back
new carb in, all new cables, rear brake finally hooked up. Electrics in place, although the stator is being rewound as this goes to press. New kickstarter, old one to Vandy's collection.

looking good paul 8)
the wheels and forks and swingarm look nice :P
cant wait to see finished product ;D
-
nice job Paul, tank came up really well.
-
Ditto the above comments. the "eff" is one of my favourite models and the little 125's look real beaut!
keep up the good work mate. 8)
-
Drumroll please............
ta da! the finished product, well almost. Some carb tuning is needed to get it to run right, but that's about it. I had it at CD6 but was having too much fun riding the Egg and everyone else's bikes to want to spend time trying to tune it there.
Don't know what to do with myself now that it's finished.
Thanks very much to all those who helped with info and advice including, but not limited to, Rusty, Vandy, Brad, Nathan, DJ etc...

-
looks great paul
now what are you going to do
with all that time on
your hands
have to find you that green bike you have been looking for
then sneak it home ;)
all forum members no what i am talking about ;D ;D
you will need another project now :D
-
Awesome mate. Very nice indeed. Do you want a project? I might have one or three for you. ::)
-
Cheers guys, yes I do want another project, but not yet.
I've sworn by all that is holy to me that I'll finish some of the half dozen major projects around the house that I've started but not finished. I think if there's less building material lying around the place I'd have less problem bringing home another bike.
So now I suppose I've got a few months to think about what bike I'd really like to do next, which is fun to do anyway. So far I'm thinking '76 YZ125, '77 CR250, '84 KX125, or something pre65? We'll see how the list looks by Christmas.
-
nice work mainline
-
c'mon Paul,
with the bikes first race meeting done and dusted, i think this thread needs an update...
-
well Mr Vandy, (thanks for asking) I really, really love the YZ. It handles much better than the Egg, the power down low isn't as good (i didn't think it would be) but the suspension is brilliant. I don't know what all this Yama-pogo crap is about. I'm still replaying the highlights from the weekend in my head.
I've got some more pilot jets coming from the mikuni guys up north, which I think will have it sorted, and apart from that, the only issue is the kickstarter which doesn't engage on every kick. Don't know what the problem is, so off with the clutchcover yet again.
When are you going to post some pics of that 360 of yours with the FB Works exhaust pipe?????

Why does reading this comment make my eyebrows rise?
-
Yep, she is a sweet bike Paul, the photos don't do her justice.
Just make sure you use a proper gasket when you put that clutch cover back on ;) ;D
-

You're related to Fozzie Bear?
Rest assured there are no smallgoods used in the construction of Vandy's FB Works Pipes (tm).

Vandy swapped me a clutch cover for a piece of a TV table that he uses to make his mufflers, and the new clutch cover seals a lot better than the old one. God knows I wouldn't want any ex-NASA types looking at the bike again with non-standard silastic on it.
-
:D :D :D
What a cack - great times - can't wait for next year.
-
stop revealing my secrets >:(
got any more of that tv table lying around? :)
-
I think we should make it standard that all machines in the compound have gasket surfaces scanned and laser cut unobtanium gaskets fitted to avoid the embarrassment that occurred at CD6.

Mainline
I need to know more! Your beaut bike resto was one that also inspired me to do the 125G.
The forks and especially the swing arm look just great. Tell me the process of how you got them so shiny and if you used some sort of protective clear coating?
Did you have any one preferred supplier to get your Yammy parts from?
cheers
-
g'day woody, no I didn't coat the swingarm or lower fork legs. I sanded them back to remove most of the nicks and gouges then poilished them up. They're not perfect but the bike is for riding.
I'm a chippy so I have an aversion to putting varnish (ie. clear coat) on something that is subject to the elements. I'd rather rub some polish on it once every couple months. Just my opinion.
As far as suppliers are concerned, the local yamaha shop is sometimes pretty good for little bits and pieces, but you're better off talking to one of the US based mobs for any major NOS bits. You can also get quite a few parts non-genuine, like engine components (crank kits etc)and save some dollars.
Some of the guys I used were
http://www.speedandsportinc.com/
http://www.tamortrading.com.au/
http://www.nwvintagecycleparts.com/
http://www.vintagedirtandtrail.com
Ebay is obviously essential these days, and you have to be creative with what you type into the search bar as sometimes the seller doesn't know what they've got ;D
let me know if you need help with anything, althought there are a shiteload of guys on here who know more than me :)
-
oh so modest Paul.... :D
Woody,
for a first go at resto~ing a bike, that 125f of Mainlines is the sweetest bit of gear...
others may know more but Paul, you got the knack for making it look the way it should.
now where's my Tv table? :D
