Title: Farleigh Castle 2012
Post by: pirie593 on January 30, 2012, 06:32:08 pm
Entries for Farleigh Castle 2012 have opened.

The event will be held 14, 15 & 16 September and this year will host an Evo MXdN as well as the Twin Shock Veterans MXdN.  In addition, for all those sewing machine fans, there is an International pre' 83 event which will see many entrants from mainland Europe (especially France).

For details of events and registration, go to http://www.vetsmxdn.co.uk/

Now is the time to make a commitment so that you can save the necessary readies and organise a bike over there.  In addition, we will need time to sort out teams, uniforms etc etc.

Any interested riders should post here and make contact with Oz riders who attended the previous events (Rusty, John, Brad etc) to discuss the mechanics of getting there, motorhome hire, arranging bikes etc etc.

I'm still weighing up whether to go this year. I reckon the organisers missed a gold mine by scheduling this event on the SAME weekend as the Goodwood Revival.

For a short period of time it seemed that the 2 events would be on consecutive weekends which would have made the trip a no brainer.

I'm not having a go at the organisers, but I am just disappointed that this golden opportunity didn't come together. I reckon both events would have benefited from more overseas visitors if the events were on separate weekends.

Oh well, maybe next year... BUGGER!!

I am planning a trip to England next and Farleigh is no my list, and goodwood would have be another to do list if they where closer together, good point Ali.

Yes, John, I'm entered (over 50's).

The Farleigh date was carefully chosen to maximise attendance for mx enthusiasts.  The clash with Goodwood is unfortunate but insignificant in relation to attendance loss from overseas.

I think they are generally different target markets  ;) last year i was in the uk 30 miles from Goodwood on that weekend but choose to visit my daughter instead  :-* Still giving myself an uppercut daily for missing Goodwood  ::)

Jeff you need to get to Farleigh  ;D dont put it off just do it  ;) Be a nice wind down after CD 9 . Go on you know you want to .

Hey Bill,
Good to hear you are going back and gettin' dirty this time...

I will make up my mind later in the year, but I totally disagree that Farleigh and Goodwood are totally different markets. Sure they are TOTALLY different events, but as celebrations of of the past, of golden eras, they have more in common than they have differences.

I for one [and of course I could be the only one] really would love to see both. If pressed I would choose Farleigh, but having never seen Fangios Merc, or real Spitfires, classic open wheelers etc I know I would be missing out by not seeing Goodwood as well.

Dave King says that they are only 2 hours apart, so if I go I reckon Goodwood on Friday and Farleigh Sat/Sun would be the go. But in a perfect world, separate weekends* would only be better.

But before that I am off to Melb for the F1...

*sorry if in my ingorance there is a specific reason for both events being on the same weekend. I am only speaking of my selfish motive of wanting to 'see it all'.   :D

Regarding the date of the VMXdN event, goodwood is not even on the radar for me i am afraid . We are dictated to by the MXGP and US outdoor  dates and MXoN dates. we cannot clash with them as some of our competitors work within these events. As far as i have seen the goodwood event is focused on the 60s and early 70s.  We most definatly are not intrested in this era of racing or bikes, sorry but times change and those events have there customers and we have ours.

Hi Dave,
As I said, I was sure there was a good reason why you chose the dates you did - your explanation makes perfect sense.

I was only expressing a single opinion and wishing that the stars would align and allow me [and] others to enjoy two great events in the one trip. If it not to be, then so be it.

No need to be sorry, that wasn't my point at all.
Thanks again for the info,

Goodwood was live on TV last year, they showed and interveiwed most of the all  top riders and rode the race track on there mx bikes and sidecars, classic cars and gp classic cars and the mustang plans
is was great to watch.

Best thing you could do would be to go to Farleigh and see for yourself, it's the biggest and best vmx meeting on the planet. Once you get there you won't even be thinking about goodwood. :)

Johnny,
I don't doubt that, but don't crucify me for dreaming of seeing both. If I am going half way round the world I reckon seeing 2 world class events would only make the trip more worthwhile.

And I never once tried to compare the 2 events. I don't care which is better, I am 99.999% sure they are both great which only fuels my dream...

But if the reality is that I have to choose then so be it, but that is my problem.  ;D
VMX42

Acutally the biggest hurdle is that both events are on the weekend of my wedding anniversary. Doh!!!  :D

Things not going tooo bad for the ausies. Some bloke called Ballard had a bit of a tussle with someone called Chuck Sun in the first race. He must have heard the beer tent was open because he was first across the line in the first race of the day. Chuck retired shortly after being overtaken with slight rear wheel problem. For the first MXDN race Mr Ballard crashed out at the start of the first lap but rejoined a lap down. He was pulling away from the leaders so who knows what might have happened :'(. Heres a few picks of the first race. I will post a load more later.

A few more. As ever the event gets bigger and better every year. The track was perfect. The guy standing next to the Cheney BSA is Andy Roberton. He is still mega quick considering he must be well over 60.

WOW what a day.  Awesome in every respect.  So much to see and not enough time.....  Last race of the day was the EVO VmxDesNations.    Some of the closest, fastest, most spectacular I have seen.  All came down to the last corner and it was won by a gnats whisker.  I thought the commentator was going to either pass out or wet himself or both.   It was a great end to a great days racing.

yeah its always a unreal event and track the aussie team had
a few bike issues i had a faulty gearbox and clutch ,ballard had jetting issues then gearbox
chris hall did a gearbox bearing but they fitted another motor thanks to maico matty
my cr500 ran well was a blast to ride track was rough on saturday and rougher on sunday
big crowd again lots of carnage everyone was on the gas geoff ballard would have smoked the over 50s
if the bike didnt fail he was riding great i ended up doing 2 practices and 8 motos over 2 days
i think i know my way around there now ha was sore though came off in practice on the downhill
in the field and landed on my side and shoulder ,still sore took painkillers all weekend but that wasnt going to stop me, full on races all classes 60+ riders with 2 gates one behind the other

GB's lap times around 2:31 in the over 50 class. Believe me, that is fast. Good clubmen are in the 2:50s.

Best twinshock times however were in the 2:15 range  :o

Best evo (pre-89 mono shock, disc brake) times were around 2:09

All from the Sunday morning block of racing.

Some fast guys there? Hell yeah.

Corner speed is where you pick it up-or so I've been told  ??? ??? ??? :D :D :D

Imagine how quick GB would be if he was 20 years younger and a specialist MX rider rather than a specialist enduro rider with one of probably the most envious records in the world in respect to ISDT / ISDE rides.

He's still consistantly mighty quicker than most , a champion bloke and he's over 50

One thing can be said sometimes in Aus. , geez its a hard crowd somedays when your at the top of the game in your arena of choice , even when your over 50.

yeah the depth is amazing my best lap was 2.37 and
i was floating around mid 30s to 40 in the race over 60 riders in the race
this was my third year and one thing i noticed was riders who were
in the top 20 2 years ago are now in the mid twenties the speed the top 20
are running at was amazing as the track was rough and rutted but good ;)

We are not having a go at Ballard at all, I respect him, just using his speed as a comparison as to how fast the Euro's and Yanks are. I don't think people realise how good the rest of the world is...

Which leads us to ask "how good have the last few generations of Kiwis been?? King Bros, Coppins, Townley and co. have been at the fore -front of world motocross for some years now."

FFS if you really think that any of the comments posted re Geoff Ballards times at Farliegh were in anyway critical then you have my deepest sympathies as you are indeed a victim of the bullshit PC world  ::)

Had a bbq with Geoff and the rest of the Australian Team on Sunday night. PMSL at Geoff, funny bloke, looks like John Cleese too 8-)

Worth a watch http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MGu4iDspxKw

FWIW Mike Bell was in the over 50's and posted consistently at 2:21 on a 250 Yamaha.

Geoff won the 1st race.

In a bid to compare apples with apples can anyone elaborate on who was faster and on what?
As far as I know Ballard was on a twinshock Maico and seems to have been on the pace in the over 50’s class when the bike was running.
So if guys were 15s a lap quicker were they younger guys (mid thirties?) and were they on Pre 89 bikes or were they also on twinshock bikes?

Yes Twinshock bikes and pretty much everyone is in their 40's and 50's.
Each team of 4 is allowed 1 rider over over 35 and the rest over 40.

;D ;D ;D So true....I've always kept the John Cleese likeness to myself thinking nobody else could see it, dismissing it as yet another quirk of my obtuse version of reality. Thankfully someone else finally sees it......Basil Ballard OAM ;D ;D

I told him I thought he looked like Cleese and he just laughed and said that he was a big fan  ;D

Geoff was more or less on the pace, certainly top 10, the field was closing in with Bell visibly the fastest rider on the track in the over 50's.
