hope you guys have a fat time, would love to be there, but work is so busy atm
-
Is this meeting a MA sanctioned Aus Title meeting?
-
The front page for the meeting's website carries an MSA badge, so one would assume so.
-
Its an MA track so assume there carrying the Insurance to, as we fill out sign- in under the mA track permit books. its a classic title event - no moderns. theres another one after the sidecar world cup tha'st an all in i think. Kinda always been billed as the geriatric titles, its always been the kick off to the speedway season after the winter practice.
Liegh Adams tribute in a few weeks too there, i hear theyre trying to get Bomber harris and a few other Top shelf current riders including hancock over for the meet as well as some old timers. Lot of aussie look to be coming home for a run too so be interested to see who shows up for the cause. BE worth going too as well. In a couple of weeks we have the Sidecar world cup on at murray bridge, so thats another must go see, there even leaving the track down for another week after, so we can run a meeting on it as well. Big month or 2 for speedway bikes coming up in SA now ;D ;D ;D
-
Had a practice last night at the track, was a bit choppy but looks to be a great feild and going to be a huge one again this year......
cant wait till race time ! on my old girl, but will fit a solo seat on to get me some height on that right peg.--> (http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d88/munchboxlive/RIMG0555.jpg)

Well.... they still look the goods eh?!!!.
-
Just hold it flat and keep turning left Freaky
Yep Good luck Freaky..bring it home 8)
-
Win it or bin it.
Nah, stay safe Freaky and enjoy.
-
You'll be right , Freaky, as Slides says stay safe, go fast , turn left, repeat good luck, love the Outfit shots, Vinnie skids outfits really stir me up, but I really like the Beezer one with the JAP top end
-
interesting night all round, plenty to see and do, had funon the solo, even put a crash in for good measure and trashed my new riding gear first time out. Top points scored in the heats on the outfit, prity sure we could have taken it out, but bike was over heating all night ( stuck thermo stat in the water bottle) ended up doing this weird thing where it would heat out and vapour lock the fuel and george would have to chop the throttle in and out to keep it running, unfortunatly happened on the start gate and the rest if history. Bike hadnt been started in 2 years, after his brother died, so this was onky fired up down the first heat with finger crossed, nothing like leaving it to the lastminute. We finished in 3rd for the night which is a positive i guess....... what could have been though huh. thats racing i guess but doesnt hurt any less. it would have been a good win for a fairy tale comeback.

Great pics Freakster,
LOVE those old speedway bikes... shit ,.. hang on,.. sorry i just dribbled all over the keyboard ;D ;D Also, a couple of questions, an old friend used to refer to a 2 valve Jawa as an ESO . I know the answer to that but he also refered to a Vincent as a HIRDA. or HEARDER. That might have something to do with HRD ( a slang term)? maybe??
Regards Mark
-
Thanks for the pic's Freaky, Drivin Ivan looks good on that old that old JAP, I bet he still cuts a fine style on the track.
-
Great stuff, Freaky, the blown V twin Beezer outfit is tops !!.
Foss
-
Slider29 -- Eso just have more webs on the crank halfs and the badge on the rocker cover as far as i know, prity much the same thing just basically ones kinda pre 70 and the other post as far as i can tell, so either name and you know what motor there taking about.
i reckon your right about the HRD, i hear them say herds too
( im sure the old boys can tell you why)
-
Thanks for the pic's Freaky, Drivin Ivan looks good on that old that old JAP, I bet he still cuts a fine style on the track.
not really, he just putted around. the JY bike were ina guys lounge room, before they brought them along, never stated since the resto. They even forgot the clutch was on finger tight and it flew off before they realised , so needed another quick check over before IM took it for a spin.
-
That's a shame, I saw some footage of him riding recently and he still went okay.
Understandable that they didn't want to trash a precious old girl like that.
-
i think he was worried about the rods or somthing being fragile.
HE did spin around on a modern but we were getting ready for the finals an i missed it but someone said he just putted that around too.
-
In the early 1930s, Phil Vincent decided he wanted to build quality motorcycles, so he purchased the rights etc to the HRD brand, once owned by Howard R. Davies, already known for its high standards, the Vincent name was added to the tank decals etc with the initials HRD prominent and the company used bought in engines from several suppliers.
However, in 1934, after troubles at the TT, and I hate to admit this, with JAP engines, young Phil had designed his own motors, which were very successful.
The Vincent motor , as we know it, had it's origin, in 1936, in a chance transposition of two drawings of the new Vincent -HRD 500 single, into a V twin configuration, the designer of the singles, and of course the twins, was Aussie engineer and designer, Phil Irving, these series A V twins morphed into the B, C, and D series.
Post WW 2 ,the V twins became the "must have" motor for Aussie speedway outfits, and as some of them had the HRD logo prominent on the rocker covers, timing covers and tanks , they became known as Herds or Hirdy Girdys, in late 1949 the logo was changed to simply Vincent as is mostly seen today.

Awesome thanks Foss for explaining for us. Keeps the dream alive....
-
I wish I had seen this before last weekend, would have loved to go. I remember going to the speedway tests between England and Australia at Rowley Park as a kid. Fantastic night out.
-
OK you have a return chance, there a classic speedway title at Riverview the week after the World sidecar cup at murray bridge.
-
Can't stop looking at those JAP speedway bikes! Bloody beautiful. And what about those Vincents!!??? What a magnificent motor. I know a bloke down here that makes them. I reckon $110k plus might get me one.
regards Mark p.s. thanks again freaky. pps any results??
-
Yeah Slider, I keep looking at the JAPs and wondering if I could find one, anyway gotta go with what ya got !
I must admit that as a young fella, at the Headquarters, the sound and the fury of four Vinnie oufits into turn one had me transfixed, however EA spells sidecar, DIVORCE, so there ya go , have ridden a skids outfit at Sapphire and pitched Jim outa a short circuit one at Nepean and frightened the daylights outa TD on one at Goulburn Speedway, he jumped off at about 50mph, screamin' ya mad ya old bastard !!
OK, OK, Foss, to the point and I hope ya dont mind Freaky, but here's a couple of photos that illustrate the HRD / Vincent thing.
1949 Vincent / HRD Black Shadow
(http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/JAP454/VincentHRD.jpg)
1952 Vincent Rapide
(http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/JAP454/Vincent.jpg)
Shows the difference in the logos, apparently the Yank dealers wanted the name changed because they thought people in the States would get confused between HD and HRD, Hmmm !!
Foss
-
Try "Herder" yes a corruption of HRD ;)

Bloody awesome shots Freaky, looks like it was a top meeting, that passing shot, with you on board, looks a little tight !!, good one.
Foss
-
Freakin' FANTASTIC Freaky. Thank you.
Was the 'racing' as good as the shots depict??
Couple of shots there of some very 'commited' teams....
-
yer some of the old boys get a little keen for the sash.
there was the 2 bump and slots as posted above, i think peter menz did a real crash, and i also saw one chair spin around and the swinger go underneath the trailing outfit, think he just hurt his leg. But it looked prity ugly as it happend, i though it would have torn his back open.
New Air fence turns up in a weeks time for the "modern season" so that will make the walls a little less daunting in future.
Will post more pics as they come to light, its a really good meeting every year. Lots of Qld and ex uK league riders come on down, , merv Jenke, nigel sadler and so on. Gets bigger every year as the old timers saddle up for another tweek.
-
Real good. I mean really bloody good!!! The sidecar boys really know how to put on a show. Pic #5 on post#38 IS AN ABSOLUTE RIPPER. regards Mark
-
Spot on Slider, that's my pick too. Shows what's going on and the intent of the team all in one pic. No need for other outfits in there to show their speed.
-
Sidecar Schmidecar, who cares. ;D
Any photo's of real bikes without training wheels. ;)

Well done Freaky, you've even got the lingo down pat, turn 4.
The uneducated tend to think, but there's only 2 corners on a Speedway track.
There's a lot going on in that 60 seconds of racing.
Great sport for ADHD sufferers.
-
thats why i reckon its ready for relaunch success, short sessions, outcomes, perfect for GEN Y
-
Great photos again Freaky! I reckon some of those bikes have got a few ( I mean a shit load) of extra kilos to carry around :D
regards Mark
-
You're right Mark.
There are a couple of chunky's there for sure, but hey, I'm not an Adonis anymore.
But don't it look like fun?
-
Hey Slides, some those boys look a bit quick don't you think? cheers Mark
-
yeah most are over 35 up to 70, so its hard to cut a fine figure after youth leave you. MErv got to be 55 and so on, those older league guys too.
But wouldnt say there any slower, probally got more to prove, and not racing 2 - 3 a week is alot easy on the body, being one night only. :D
-
Freaky that's Kevin Webb in the yellow leathers passing you, for some reason he was last out the gate every start and had to work his way through the field each time. Merv Janke is wearing black leathers with red stripe ( JW on left shoulder) and was always first out the gate every start and disappeared into the distance in the 2v class! Unfortunately his Jap maggy played up and restricted him to 3rd in the ESO/Jap class. Nigel Sadler was pure class in the 4v upright class, someone said he was once rated #3 in the world? Great night out, ran into lots of people I hadn't seen for 30 years!! ( PS where can we find those photo's?)
-
Cool thanks Rob, i only came across him on the heat board hence i said 'i think thats Swervin mervin'. Either way all them old buggers are still faster than most of us toe pokers.
There is a pic up there above of you ( assume in the 33 race jacket) if so i only saw one more of that one get up. what was Doug wearing and ill ask the lady if she has any more. Not sure who she was but they came via a few people, i think she was with the sidecar crowd, as all her pics were mostly outfits. I think she only had these solos as she was out there on the infeild waiting to take some snaps of Ivan M

He was cetainly up there and and fast tracked young rider, but if i recall it was all cut short when he had a heart mumor under 21yr meeting and he was told to stop immediatly, returned to Australia and the rest is history. I raced with him in the 4 valve class last year and he was just smooth as, HE has been back for the classic title for a few years now and love's it, i did hear there are about 5 more Qld riders who were coming down but dates , bikes clashed but they are keen as for next year and planning already ( some flew down to just watch ).
I think a lot of these old racers will be stacking up for a run next year and the event will keep getting bigger and bigger, we might have to qualify to even get a run ???? Doh....

Marshy, Dougy was wearing my old Rowley Park number 68, you've got one nice shot of him there. Did allright for a 16 year old kid having his first ever ride..stayed upright and smooth..I was also pretty happy to stay upright ( but certainly was not smooth) having my first ride for 30 years. Very special experience to race against my son in classic Dirt Track, Crystal Brook VMX and classic speedway, all in one year. Even better to still be competitive with him! This could be the last year I'll be beating him so I'm making the most of it!
Those sidecar guys all got their dates mixed up, most of them thought they were at the World Titles at Murray Bridge this weekend rather than the Classic titles...... Crazy stuff, bumping and banging, ramming passengers....just like the old days. Peter Menz was VERY lucky the bike missed him when he had the BIG flip. Fantastic to watch though, and to talk to Ivan Mauger and see him ride again ( although slowly) was an added bonus.
You be careful at Murray Bridge and Renmark on those chairs, and have fun on the 2v.
-
Yeah wish my dad let me ride a bloody bike when i was a kid. Your lucky you have the contacts, not many people can loan 2 bikes, 2 outfits and gear. so dougy should be kissing your arse big time for the oppertunity if nothing else. I've spend $5 grand over time just to ride the track.
Not sure if dougy was in any of my heats... only one i can find here is a solo shot no groupings, will keep looking. Get him confused with that Kane kids suit side on.

yer some of them Sidecar boy like to Rub...... sometimes it ends in tears.
I have always had one rule in classic racing. 'No one get's hurt'. Just have to convince these guys to think a bit more. Reality is its only a plastic trophy or a Prity sash, not worth killing someone over.

Hey Freaky
Think that is Peter Tolley in red and white leathers and Doug Cotterell on the other HRD. Peter taught me to swing on his HRD at Brooklyn Speedway in the early 70s while Doug built one of the first waterbottles. Both lived in the Bentleigh/Brighton area of Melbourne. Peter now races a sweet Triumph 500 with his son as the swinger while Doug built a nice Jawa 500cc Sidecar and both race at Broadford. Still in the Bentleigh East and Ormond areas. Tim had some pictures listed back a few months ago. I stayed with the solos, they kept telling me that the swinger had control over where the bike went but I felt I was the padded balast that stopped the next bike hitting the driver. Got admit though those boys could party. Saw Clarrie Jones eat some goldfish one night at the clubhouse in Mildura to get back at Taylor who had put a snake in his toolbox. Clarrie managed to throw them back up a while later after quite a few beers. Luved to fight on and off the track. I remember sporting a black eye for a few weeks cos Doug reckoned I talked too much for a young brat. Unfortunately the photos you showed from Adelaide seem to look like they are still battling for sheep stations. Must go back to the old saying for the 3 wheeled folk. "You don't have to be insane but it helps."

#87 if you have any Aussie speedway pictures can you please post them on the Face book site, were trying to get the clasic speedway back up and running and its seems to pay to put it out there.

Hi Freaky,
I do have or can get speedway photos (mainly sidecars and mostly from Liverpool, The Royale and Newcastle Motordrome, some from country town tracks).
However, they are from late '86 through to '89!
let me know if they are wanted.

Classic footage Freaky from the old Syd Showground, The Royal.
The pit gate pilon closest to camera early in the footage is where my Speedway career ended on the 22/10/77.
Solo riders that I recognise inc, Jim Airey, Langy, Bob Sharpe, Bill Landels & Geoff Curtis.
Sidecars, Doug Tyreman with a T on the front, Doug Robson with the red cross and Graeme Young.

I kinda like this version of the showgrounds myself ;D
Sydney Sports Ground in about 1948. Features Aub Lawson, Lionel Van Praag, Oliver Hart and Max Gosskreutz. Jimmy Davies and Jack Carruthers in the? sidecars.

How bloody good is that, an insight into the golden era of the speedway in Sydney.
Did you get any tips for your swinging career?
-
Hey, Freaky
That old Sydney Sports Ground footage is priceless !! thanks for putting it up, Jimmy Davies would have been riding an 880 JAP powered sidecar and Jack Caruthers would have been on a Vincent outfit, bloody top stuff !!

Hey Slides and Freaky
Just watched the '96 Showground footage, I have 2 amateur dvds of just about the whole of that meeting, taken by one of the Old and Rooted MCC boys , I'll see if I can copy them , if I am successful , I'll let you know.
EA and I were there at the last two meetings at the Headquarters, the first date EA and I went on was to the Showground Skids in 1967, drank a dozen longnecks between us and drove home in the Peugot bike transporter.
How times change !!
Foss
-
So you let EA have one longneck, no wonder she fell for you Foss.
I've stumbled across a new book coming out next month about the Royale.
Ghosts in the Bullpens, written by Tony Loxley & Dennis Newlyn, forwards by Jim Airey, Doug Robson & Bryan Cuneen inc 350 images.
A must have for anyone who experienced the Royale at its best.
Or in my case, worst.
-
I'll tell ya something , Slides, EA could drink me under the table when we were younger !!!
Old mate of mine reckons I won the Lottery when EA and got married, she likes Speedway and Dirt Track, road bikes, she is the BEST pillion, camping ,hunting and fishing etc, I reckon he's right.
Foss
-
Love is grand they say eh Foss . . . . back to my question -
Does anyone have dvd footage of the '88 showground "Billy Sanders Memorial" meeting, the Ghost's Kwiksnatch (oops should read Kwiksnax) Wednesday night meeting at Liverpool OR Newcastle Motordrome footage from 86 through 89?
Cheers
