Title: New YZ250H Project
Post by: Cabmkr on October 05, 2011, 10:54:12 pm
Last weekend I picked up and 81 YZ250H, one of the bikes I have been on the lookout for. $300 and almost all original. I am looking forward to this rebuild. Forks are good (hopefully rear shock also), both rims are junk but good reason for a set of excels, motor will need a full rebuild as something is wrong inside, kick start shaft is messed up, will get all new plastics, etc etc.

Well if it makes anyone feel better Im sure I will have to through a few bucks at it. Lets see, motor $500, Wheels $500, new plastic $500, Tires chain a sprockets $500 and about $800-$1000 in small bits, actually $3300 isnt so bad is it?

You're probably right ::).  I paid $1000 for my bucket of bolts  :o :o

Go for it Cabmkr.  Make sure you take heaps of pictures before you start and post plenty of progress pics as you go.  The resto threads are the most interesting IMO.

I paid 3 grand for a 250 J last year, 1 owner. When i got it home and stripped the top end off it was on it;s first oversize. Awsome !!!!
So $300 for a half original, well done . Look forward to seeing the end result, good luck. Its's all about getting the old girls back on the track.

As this is a bike I have been looking for, and it is all there,  It will get a full rebuild, and will try to use as many OEM parts as makes sence but will be using excell rims, all new repo plastic and tank etc. Also it may get a pipe and an upgraded rear shock as funds permit. It will be a rider and I would like to do some vintage events on it, but in the end just a fun ride to use and have.

What I usually do is brake the bikes down as soon as I get them but I am keeping this one together until I start to rebuild it and I will take lots of photos and post the process as I too love the rebuild threads

Cheers Chris

I found antoher YZ250H over the weekend , and paid $160 for it. Actually mostly complete except for the side covers and a few of the parts that were not good on the one I already got are good on this one  :)

I know of that problem, my Xs650 streetracker project has been stalled for over 2 years now, I stripped all the parts i didnt need and cut the frame, got a radian swingarm an XL350 tank and a glass seat unit then thats it. Right now I am torn between a Ty250B and an RM125X. Mostly comes down to finances and I have a hard problem buying a bike to part out to help pay for the rebuilds as I want to save everything!

Just like the YZ250 for parts, after about 2 days Im thinking I will rebuild both of them  :-\  One as original and one modded

they are probably both good enough to restore.  People have done resto's on a lot worse.
Parts are pretty easy to get - it would only be a matter of finances (as it is with me - there are always things competing for the dollars)

Well things are back on track with the 250H. Sold the Suzuki, got the TY250 rebuilt (on the cheep) and picked up a 3rd YZ for $100.

On the rebuild front, I have had the frame swingarm and pipe beadblasted, 2 pack painted the frame, all new bearings for the chassis, just waiting for fork bushings and a shock bump stop. Motor has had a bore with a new piston,  all bearings  and seals and a new rod kit, so its on the workbench ready to go back together.
I also have made a bolt on sidestand for it.  more photos to follow

Well I finally got back in the shop to work on the YZ. Between Christmas, work and picking up another 4  bikes the YZ hasnt been touched since before Christmas. Today, I refinished the fork legs, rear shock and painted the pipe and swingarm

I am in Ontario Canada north of Toronto and waiting the snow to melt!

I picked up a 250H for $150 a while back but it is a basket case.
The guy was riding it with the expasion chamber snapped off near the header, has a coach bolt for the swing arm pivot. (You get the picture)
Very average looking but near complete.
I may just clean it up a flog it off as I can see it being a money pit.
Don't know, will have a think about it.

Based on my experience that's what I'd be doing  :o.  Unless you particularly need a 250H  :-\
Or part it out  :-\

Even though it's as rough as guts, it's (apparently) a goer & near complete.
Would make heaps more parting it out but that would mean one less VMX bike out there & that goes against the grain.
I won't sell it as "RACE READY" unless I pull down the engine & check the whole thing out.
May not rebuild it but can at least sell it with a clear conscience by giving buyer a report.
Not like the Rsole that sold me a YZ400E completely rebuilt, READY TO RACE.
Pulled it down and was so disgusted I shelved it & bought another. Nothing, and I mean nothing, was any good. Needed rebore, gearbox, clutch, rod kit, lots of stripped threads etc. etc. etc. Sorry the rear wheel was OK
What made it worse, it was all for a mate who was trusting me to steer him from such sh*t.

I posted an ad for an evo bike a few weeks back .. no responses.  Would this one be rebuildable into a genuinely race ready bike?  If so I might be interested.

Yes depending on how deep your pockets.

As I said I haven't made up my mind what to do with it, thus I never contacted you (Saw the add)

Will have some others coming up, just don't know when. D, E, F & G's but not in time for the season.

I am rebuilding the shock and I got a new All Balls seal head but am unsure if there should be a top out washer installed as the cuped washer in the stock one. I can't use the stock one as it will hit the aloy on the seal head if I dont modify it. Also if I add a washer it would incread the stack hieght of the seal assembly. the rubber stopper is quite thick I was thinking of cutting it down to get the same height as the stock one

And I drilled out the stock nitorgen fill and installed a normal air fitting

Its been a while since it has been a busy summer, and the fact that I fight with getting it done quickly, then thinking I have done it right so far so just dont rush, Here is a pic from last week.

This last weekend I got the carb rebuilt and on ingnition in and timed and the clutch in. I got it fired up two nights ago, but still lots of little stuff to do. I have my zinc plating process set up so i can plate as i am building along and have been orderin small bits from the Yamaha dealer all week long. If i get the time I should be able to test ride it on Sunday.

Cheers, Chris

Plastics are XYZ and are very nice, and I have a set of gold rims on my YZIT but the back is quite faded so they haven't made it on my H.
