I have been looking to buy either a roost/chest protector or some full armour or a pressure suit but have no expereince with any of these. :-[
I do have knee guards and a back/spine protector so far. Full armour and p suit look a bit restrictive..is this the case?
Was wondering what people use and find to be the best or most comfortable for body protection when track riding??? ???
Cheers...

Greg, I've always worn the old style body armour until purchasing 1 of these. I would not go back. No restriction, easy to get on as they zip up the front and the back protection is a definate must have. Price was good too ;)

hey Doc can you tell me what brand that armour is
-
Yep, I wear a full suit like that, though mine is a Dainese. Cost a fortune at the time, but that was maybe 4 years ago and it's still good. Comfortable, not at all restrictive and very confidence inspiring to wear. One tip is to wash the thing off with fresh water after each ride to ensure sweat etc doesn't sit on it and rot the stitching/fabric.

I wear the old style armour, 'cause I can't find a turtle suit that is remotely comfortable. I don't think I have unusual proportions (well, maybe a somewhat oversized belly...), but both the 661 and Dainese stuff felt really uncomfortable (and not around the belly...).
And I'd gone in with the intention of buying a turtle suit, so it wasn't like I was making excuses for letting my wallet talk me out of it. Hell, Anna was there offering to pay for half the total cost if I upgraded to the better version of the 661 suit, and I still couldn't bear the thought of wearing something so uncomfortable.
So, I'm sticking with my old style armour, although I'm looking into the addition of a road-race style back-protector underneath.
Gotta do something about my elbow guards though - they were the initial motivation for looking at the turtle suits, because they keep slipping down. I can race-tape them to my arms and they stay put, but...
-
I wear one of these UFO ones. It makes you look like a gridiron linebacker (whatever that is) but it's comfortable and you don't really think about it when you're riding.
The only problem is that it's pretty hot.

LWC, the Brand name is 'Storm Leathers'.
-
I had the Dainese suit but couldn't ride with the back protector on as it felt as if I'd done a big poo in my pants.
Now I have a THOR chest/back armour because it's the only one I can wear and get the neck-brace on by myself. Have to wear seperate elbow guards now which move all over the place and are a pain....
I tried on a mate's preasure suit but I felt like Dolly Parton with the thing on. It may have been over-inflated. They are meant to be the best for reducing internal injuries.
-
I swear by my 661 pressure suit - most comfortable thing I have ever used and more protection than anything else I have tried?

My body armour of choice is (wait for it) from the sport of Roller Hockey. I got onto that after i read a web page uploaded by a guy in the states who mangled his shoulder bigtime. when recovered, he did investigation into what worked best to save shoulder from ripping and parting and stuff. he came up with roller hockey armour (see pic from a retail supplier in the states....if i made it work), or go to http://www.hockeymonkey.com/ccm-sp662smujr.html
most 'body armour' for mx is just roost protection, not impact protection. BIG difference.
Tip: whatever you use, make sure the bit over the shoulder itself overlaps with the upper arm protection and neck protection bits - spread the impact shock so the impact doesn't just compress the shoulder itself (which often then busts).
-
I`m with Graeme....go the Dainese...sure it`s hot to wear ....but usually with aftermarket stuff you get what you pay for
-
My 661 pressure suit is new and I've only worn it for one practice meeting; but my first impression is that it's great.
Getting it on is easy enough provided you take the time to slide all the protection correctly into place as you go.
Once on it's comfortable - and I didn't take it off all day.
That practice day was a stinking hot Qld summer day and I did feel warm.
However, I'd put that down to my choice of 100% cotton jersey.
When I took the jersey off the millions of little vent holes let the breeze in beautifully.
The only difficulty I found was getting the jersey over the top of the lobster back thing - it tends to hook on when you're getting dressed.
All in all I'm happy with it.
-
661 Pressure Suit for me too. Once it on I don't notice it at all.
I definitely would have noticed it not being there when I dropped the 250 in the mud and the guy behind me slammed into my back.

I got this "Fox" one from [email protected] (Anton & AJ) at Wollongong for $102. regd post. Haven't crash tested it yet but found it pretty comfortable on all day. They're also for sale from a few Chinese ebayers. Go for one size larger than your normal size for a better fit and deal locally just in case you need to swap it.
You can also get Fox raptor knee guards for half price at ebay Item number: 380000208861.
cheers

is this the 661 gear being mentioned ?

Here's my 661; it appears to be same as your photo but with different coloured piping.

My 661 is at least six months old; if your photo was gleaned from the 661 web site it could well be the new (2008?) model.

Quick question: What your all calling a "Pressure suit" IS exactly the same as the Chinese and Dainese "Mesh" type?...isn't it? or is there a difference, (and I mean in performance, etc.)
I notice the ePay types are now selling whole the set-up i.e. pants, jersey and mesh body armour for $190 :o
Just trying to decide which way to go.

looks like a mutant ninja turtle ;D
i think the standard armour you can buy
worn on the outside is
still the best ;D
-
i've always had the FOX body armour and love it. had a big get off about 2 yrs ago where i broke my shoulder/ribs and felt the armour did it's job as intended. i'm now wearing an ACERBIS chest guard but prefer the FOX.
the only drawback i can think of with the plastic external chest protector is you can't "show off" your jersey as well or to dispaly a race number on the back can be a little tricky.
-
661 gets my vote . Hey Rusty at your age you need to take care of your body ;D

i wear the dianese which i find is comfortable once its on .i used to to wear just a back protector over my old '62 omodies leathers but i cracked a rib standing on my forehead at nepean about 3 yrs ago so i saved up some pension money for the dianese only problem is the back protector covers my old merrylands club colour patch. cheers wally.
-
I have had the Dianese for close to 10 years now and besides one zipper it has been great- has anybody tried to wear a Leatt neck brace or similar with one of these all in one type armour suits;eg.Dianese/Sixsixone etc.I've been thinking about getting a neck brace but can't get my head around how the back projection on the neck brace would sit properly with the back protector part of the armour suit.

I own a 661 suit but back in the day my protective chest/shoulder pads looked similar to the modern 'external' armour.
Much like the modern 'rugby league style' shoulder protection.
So is there any reason it can't be worn under the jersey - despite the common practice to wear it on the outside?

i still wear my jt v2000

That bike looks like a piece of shit!! ::)
-
I'm with russ on the armour debate! Wearing one of those "pressure suits" would give me the shits
I wear FOX roost 2 new generation and have had a few big ones (stacks) I recently landed on my shoulder dislocating it, if it wasn't for this armour I reckon it would be broken or dead now!
I have a set of V2000 as well and it gives great protection and still looks the best 20 years-on!
-
by the way the yz465 :P
is squirtmotos bike
i borrowed at conondale
holeshoted and won race :o
now i have to build another one for myself 8)
sold my one a while back :'(
new i should not have :'(

I got my Oneill hammer body armour a couple of years ago, put it in over my jersey. Looked lousy, very non era. Couldn't see the Montesa logo (most important). So long as you get a bigger than your normal jersey size, no reason it can't go over the armour. VMX to me is also looking the part as much as possible, both bike & rider, so long as safety is not compromised.
-
Hey squirts and nobuddy what handle bars you got on that shit looking 465? I'm using the el cheapo universals from team moto with a high bend but they bend even if you drop the bike in the shed, those on the photo look like a high-ish bend?
-
I've got the 661 armour as well, and though I've worn it a couple of times and haven't stacked it yet, I certainly have no complaints whatsoever about the comfort.
I reckon with the additional elbow, forearm, and spine protection it'd have to be better than the old school external armour. Sorry guys, just an opinion.
-
hey tony are you ever gunna get of the pilot jet or what ::)
pro taper seveneights bars kx high bend are good
around $90.00 i think :o
most shops or serco will have them 8)
-
I have a special bend "fat bar" set I got from MCS 4-5 years ago. You can't get them anymore they were perfect for the YZ's as they had a wierd bend that when you have the ends level they slope forward to compensate for the angled tripple tree bar mounts. Also the adapter kit added 25mm to the height.
The top tripple from a YZ 250 S has a straight bar mounting and is one piece not rubber mounted, this with any Windham, KX high or Button bend I think would be the best set-up.

I agree, but the old pants don't even go close to fitting after all these years.
This bloke always makes an effort with the period tackle.
-
someones buddy, whats a pilot jet I'm still only using the air screw circuit,,, :P
-
So what's the latest on the ePay cheapies?(Amoured vests) Has anyone actually touched one? and if so do they seem as if they might do the job....i.e. similar plastics and padding, they're all claiming CE approved armour.
Once upon a time I would have said "you only get what you pay for" Now I'm not so sure.... ???
Probably all come from China anyway. No Name vests are selling for $60 now, so even if the mesh part disintegrated
you could still buy 5 of 'em for the price of a "good one"
