Some no doubt would have seen this and others would have heard but watch it anyway..
I found after about 5 seconds I couldn't drag myself away till the end.
we all worry about the odd break or gash but this serves to remind us other things, in a instant, can reshape our and others lives forever. Play safe kids! ;)

late edit, just watched it again..now I don't swear much online or in public but this is so forking sad..I am so glad it 'is' mandatory nowdays!! I agree 100% with what Danny says, trailbikes, MX, quads, pitbikes, any bikes it doesn't matter what. First thing to learn is safety above all.
-
Despite the sadness of Danny Chandlers situation, his message is just so important. If anybody can be the poster child for motocross safety it's Magoo Chandler. He rode at 110% and will be paying the price for the rest of his life.
By making it mandatory for juniors to wear neck braces, shoulder pads and perhaps knee braces we would be getting the kids used to having to wear the stuff so that by the time they're adults it'll be as natural as putting on a helmet or wearing a seat belt.
I had a friend who became a quadraplegic in a speedway accident. Overnight he went from being a fit, strong and very independant individual to being reliant on outside help for everything from wiping his arse to being fed. His wife left him, he lost his business after his business partner milked the accounts dry and eventually lost his house and everything he held dear in this world. After a few years it all became too much for him and he took an overdose of pain killers. It's a crook story but if stories like his and Magoos are taken on board by more riders and they start using neck braces, lives will be saved. It's that simple.

Mum;s and dad;s would buy Leatts neck brace;s if they were'nt so forken dear >:( all about the dollar

just in case by some minute microscopic unimaginabley slim chance you never knew who Danny Chandler was here's a classic.

I never knew Magoo was as bad as he is. Still it is great to see him still involved and enjoying bikes.
-
Thanks for posting that one Dr, good to see he's got a few projects out back. Yeah I increasingly feel that racing motorbikes is not the smartest thing to be doing. The smart thing to do is like he says to focus on safety.
I have no neck brace, wear open face helmet, have body armour - whilst it has shoulder shields I feel that they offer little help, wear orthopedic sort of back brace belt, Knee pads - not braces, it's my boots that give the greatest confidence.
There is one other thing I do for protection, it's a saying; "Discretion is greater than valour."

I don't know, is a child worth $600? I think it's something that has to be calculated into the price of the whole setup. Bike, helmet, boots, goggles, gloves pants, armour and neck brace.
-
The neck brace - is there anyone on the forum who's used one but decided not to bother in future?
It's foreign to me so I'm undecided; and don't get me wrong - I can see the big picture but I'm chasing opinions of those who disagree with the item and why.
-
IV'E USED A NECK BRACE SINCE LAST YEAR, A GOOD INVESTMENT, HAVE HAD NO PROBLEMS WEARING IT.
-
I wear an EVS neck roll, and will probably buy a Leatt at some stage too. I think it's well worth while, who wants to end up wrecked for life from a simple crash that went wrong? I am also keen to get some decent knee braces too...
-
I have the EVS neck roll as does my 7 Year old daughter. I have tested mine & it worked great. A Friend of mine hit a tree on a quad wearing the EVS as well. She was bruised and battered but hear neck was fine, not even saw. Could of been luck, I put it down to the EVS neck roll. Any one want to buy a repaired TRX 250.
-
i,ll take some more info on the neck braces pls people , photo,s , a good supplier ,brand , ect , details pls
-
Yup..I never gave neck rolls much thought till I watched the vid but now I am most interested..seems the older I get the more self preservation becomes the main issue. Cost permitting I'd like to try one at least.
-
Better a collar bone then a NECK. Alpinestar have a neck brace now .
-
Of course everyone would like to have the best of everything unfortunately not many can get the best of everything so it's a comprimise between what you can afford and what you want .I did a mx training school last year and no mention of neck braces , It is new technology and with a big crew riding ,very hard to fit into the budget . My daughter was involved in crash at the dirt track yesterday and while talking to the other kid involved ,checking that he was ok after a cartwheel ,there was a mark on his collar where he landed on the back of his neck ,no damage this time but obviously there could have been so i will shopping for the kids this week and it will be for a neck roll type like the EVS one i think !!.Has anyone seen the Alpinstar brace ??.
-
Just got one leatt neck brace off ebay $420, free freight from US.glad boy child and husband are the same size and race at different times.love that mastercard ;D ps thanks heeps gator
-

-
GO kart guy sell neck rolls on Ebay regualery for $27. THere are some shitter but keep looking for this one as he has the better ones. if i can find hi email ill post his id.
At that price you can at least get yourself a starting point.
-
I will have look on ebay and Geogh Taylors Motorcycles have got a sale on this week ,will have allok there too.
-
Holy Shit, some of you simply don't get it!!!!!
Are you prepared to forgo $600 for a neck brace, and God forbid join the group of esteemed and revered riders like David Baily, Jimmy Button, Ernesto Fonseca, Niki Urwin and Wayne Rainey?
No one has said that the Leatt (or similar device) will definitively save you from life changing events, but i don't want to be the person that says "If Only ......"
Having to find $600 to replace a piston/rings and a rod kit in your pride and joy will not stop you racing/riding forever, a busted body will.
Stop fu#*&ing around, forget wether it will get cheaper in time and get the correct safety gear. In 6 months time you will have forgotten about the cost.
And did i have the money to buy one - Nope. Did i go to the bank and extend my VISA by $500 - You Bet!!
-
Bahnsy, I think you'll find the main problem is not only the cost. It's 2 fold. It's expensive and it's new (sort of, for bikes at least) anything new is met with some reservation, especially when one has been set in their ways for so long. I mentioned I'd like to try 1 first, maybe that's a dumb thing to say but I too feel a little sceptical that I would feel comfortable..I felt exactly the same about the back brace too until I bought 1 last year..now I do not ride without it simple as that!..I think it's just a matter of time as with anything new. Jumping up and down doesn't really do a lot, if enough people put into practice it'll soon spread and hopefully become par for the course for many more before it's too late, myself included.
-
Well Bahnsy i like to think i did good tonight as i have a father and son wearing one now.good move vmx 247 for your son
-
Passionate, persistant, perhaps even anal :)
I was 15 odd meters away when i watched the Kawasaki go down with Niki Urwin on board at Wonthaggi. My best friend is extremely close to Bronte Holland and i have seen the effect on him. Don't wish that situation on anyone.
If anyone is travelling to the VIPER/Dandenong MCC weekend at Wonthaggi this coming weekend and you are serious about buying a Leatt neck brace, i will forgo any riding sessions so that you can try mine for a few laps.

Today, I took me young bloke (8 years) old up to the quarry near my place where we always go for a quick lap or two, hes riding around and around quarry used a a dumping ground for woodchip after the Newcastle storms, goes behind a woodchip pile and doesnt come out the other side, start to run around to where he should be and there he is laying on the ground motionless, FARK comes to mind and a im into sprint of a world class athlete (100m in under ten seconds), get to him and hes laying there bike stuck on one leg, no arm movment, no head movement, nothin but just laying there, yelled at him where ya hurt and looks up at me and says just me knee a bit sore, gets up hobbles around, gets back on and off he goes again, point is scared the shit out of me and now hes going to get the Leatt brace to go with every other piece of safety equipment available, (and he has everything from head to toe but not a neck brace). I'll get one too because he likes to wear the same stuff as his old man and we wont go riding without. I reckon I got pretty lucky it was not serious but shit like that gives you a hell of a wake up reality check (thank fu_k), seeing your kids hurting is about the lowest feeling you can get, thing is could of ended up a lot worse, better get back to evilbay and start looking ;)
-
I know this is not leatt but principles the same, anyone heard of this version as seems same logistics to the leatt, not as flash looking, half the price but this is not an issue as $429 Australian from US distributor for the Leatt with free shipping

Rosco,
I saw one of these in a bike shop about a week ago, they are apparently just moulded polystyrene foam covered in material, they are lighter than a leatt but non adjustable and definatly not as comfortable.
I would question how much research the manufacturer has put into this brace, I and my kids have the leatt brace and it seems to be fairly inferior and i doubt it would offer the same protection as a leatt, but on the flip side it probably offer you more protection than nothing at all.
Durability could also be questioned, I have stood on my brace in full gear withjout any ill effects, where as I think this one might struggle with my 100kgs without snaping something.
I guess as usual you get what you pay for.
-
Fifteen years ago everybody was sooking that knee-braces were too dear but those of us who had to work on a Monday bought them.
How anyone can justify not spending the equivelent on a neck-brace is beyond me.
As the man said. For most of us the price of a piston kit would be the equivelent of a Leatte Clubman brace (get the fuggin' thing off of Ebay!).
If you have to buy one for your kids, sell a bike or two.
You'll have to sell ALL your bikes if you or your kid breaks his/her neck.
I can't see any room for argument on this one...... ???

BTO sports have a EVS neck brace for $159 US.http://www.btosports.com/p/EVSRCEVO Doesn't look too bad. I read in another forum where I guy I had met in the past was running in the Australian Safari. At the end of each day he would log onto the thread and post pics and a story of his days racing. I noticed in a pic he was wearing a Leatt brace. I thought "good idea." Anyway he ended up crashing bick time. Broke his neck and the brace. He's okay, he sent the brace back to Leatt to be repaired. Leatt called the contact number to ask how he was, judging by the damage to the brace, they thought he was dead or badly crippled. He probably would be if he wasn't wearing it at all.
It's a good read at http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=264552&highlight=australian+safari+pilbara

I can't see any room for argument on this one...... ???
While I’m not against these things I’ll give it a shot.
Spinal injuries are at the heart of our greatest fear, & emotions can run high when remembering our slain hero’s, but how many of these would have been saved? Rainey & Bailey were both masters of their craft so it came as quite a shock to read of their plight, but I thought that they had both been hit in the lower back by their own bikes. I didn’t research this debate but was it Jesseman that cased out over a double & compressed & bruised his spine??
Neck injuries are rare & while these things will find you when you least expect it, most of these recent injuries come from Freestyle & Supercross stuff.
By all means buy one if you can afford it but I don’t see the need to become paranoid because your kid falls over on his peewee (Sorry Rossco, I know too well the panic you felt)
The urgency of the need for one depends more on the riding that you do.
My son & I both need new boots, he’s outgrown his again & mine are as old as, & I consider these a higher priority than a neck brace as we are both more likely to suffer a foot injury while riding around our tracks.
If my son started racing or jumping doubles I would get him one.
If I ever get the chance to ride Finke I would definitely get one.
If I start racing half seriously I would consider one.
But for most of the riding we do I will go out on a limb here & so I’m not going to bother.
And should they be compulsory for juniors. I would say yes for any kid that rides Supercross, but not for a kid riding your average local race or club day.
MA have made it compulsory for juniors to wear body armour, these are cheap enough & can be obtained second hand even cheaper.
MA have also bought in a log book system before your kid can race but what does it really achieve? They are seen to be safety conscious but what I hear a lot about is the lack of practice available for junior races (& seniors for that matter)
If your sending kids out to race on a track they hardly know then yes their going to come home with injuries. Clubs seem more concerned about their tracks being shredded than having riders know the track.

The clincher for me was meeting an older A Grader at Bacchus Marsh with a couple of lovely dents in his forehead where they'd just removed the permanent brace that he'd been wearing for the past six months after snapping his neck in a "friendly" vets race. Wasn't a high speed get-off or ploughed into by the pack. A low speed crash.
He's lucky that he works for a mojor bike distributor and they were sympathetic to his plight. They paid him even though he could do bugger all and wasn't a pretty advertisment for the pro's of riding an off-road motorcycle.
Not many of us could be that lucky.
He is no doubt that a neck-brace would have prevented what could have been a very physical and financially bad time for him and his family.
To me now, itd be like riding without a helmet. Sure I may never injure myself but I'd never ride to my full potential either.
-
I'm buying braces more for peace of mind and the belief I have done all i can possiby to reduce risk both for my young bloke, knowing at least I have done what I can, also buying one for me and I dont ride that quick and gotten older and hate to admit but the reflexes arent as quick as they used to be and because if anything were to happen, whos gonna support my wife and kids, I hope nothing ever happens that could result in any such injury but accidents do happen, its just the degree of the accident that changes, give it 5 years and youll be hard going to see anyone not using one if there serious about safety, when we were youngsters, nothing like this was available but I can remember at least two guys I went to school with with halo wearing neck injuries so I guess they were lucky. They still get to walk.

I love the pass on steve wise's right, while he was looking over his left shoulder.....classic.
-
Evo, great racing alright..right on the limits and that pass was timed to perfection ;)
-
Steve Wise is now a Holy Roller Christian minister. You occasionally see him on the Christian channel struttin' his stuff to the wide eyed gullible.
-
But.......Steve Wise nonetheless must be a great guy for the simple reason that he searched for me last year at Mid-Ohio just to ask if he could have a copy of VMX Magazine. A man of very good taste! He actually was a really nice guy to talk to and didn't mention his Church once during the few chats we had after that, over the weekend.

Safety gear is murpy's law. If you wear it you wont need it. Don't wear it and you'll need it.
