Very Interesting project. As you might recall, I have expressed on several occassions I think these types of projects and these types of Clubman racer/converted trail bikes are as important to the 'living museum' aspect of VMX as the exotic and the rare.

Steel sliders, square swing arm, steel guards :) - very OEM.  It will be interesting to see it progress. Good luck. Keep us posted. 8)

Ok so its a week late . The frame has been done ,copied one I got from Vandy . before anyone comments the wheels were done for another project so a full width hub is on its way.                                                                                                                       (http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m612/Iain_Cameron/DSC_0079.jpg)                                                                      (http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m612/Iain_Cameron/DSC_0084.jpg)                                                                     (http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m612/Iain_Cameron/DSC_0083.jpg)                                                                            (http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m612/Iain_Cameron/DSC_0082.jpg)                                                                                                      foot pegs are off a yz h  ,left side cover is dtmx 72 right side cover is 73 mx the chain guard is by Vandy,  well I copied his design

MCS mini mudder.
about $30 bucks from the local bike shop
if they let you look through the MCS cataloge, you'll be able to work out the correct model/name/number for them.
i believe they used to be available in quite a few colours but may only be white now.
thats whats on the back of my blue one as picture by the pic hoarding Graeme ;D & should bolt straight onto that frame i did for you Freaky.

Cooll so far i have broke 3 rears, butnot on the track.  either loading, unloading or at home feeeking things.   only only certain one seem to take up the space and look normal.

As much as I love your new DT1 project Iain, I have to agree with Graeme. The DT1 Yamaha's aura centres on its unique tank shape. If you remove that distinctive lump of mild steel the bike becomes 'just another dirt bike', unrecognisable from any other old bike.

I made a bad mistake in building my current Hindall DT1. In a rush to get it finished for CD8 I fitted a Wassell alloy tank, Wassle seat and period Preston Peddy 'Mudder' style mudguards. In the shed prior to finishing I thought the bike looked sweet but once out in the real world and on the trailer I realised that I'd made a bad tactical error. The whole dynamics of the bike were wrong, the tank too long, the seat and shocks too short and Preston Petty mudguards were still as ugly as they were back in the seventies and didn't suit the bike. Somewhere during the build I lost direction on the project and had been trying to create something similar to my polished alloy Cheney, a DT1 powered shiny Hindall, when what I should have been doing was to build a Hindall framed DT1.

To create that concept I've decided to rehash the bike using original DT1 parts to change the whole look of the bike. The Wassell tank is now on my Maico trials bike, replaced by a NOS AT1 Yamaha tank that'll be soon painted original Yamaha pearl white with black pinstripe. I also have a straight DT1 tank but the smaller all over AT1 version looks a little smaller and therefore neater without losing the distinctive shape (I think that may be an AT1 tank on Vandy's beauty). Gone are the plastic Preston Petty 'guards, replaced by a GYT Yamaha high front and 6" wide alloy rear...both painted silver as they were at the factory. The stock DT1 rear 'guard is too short (and heavy) to use on the Hindall frame so I'll paint the aftermarket alloy tank silver to fit the stock image. The dumpy Wassell seat is being replaced by a custom made replica of the one on my Cheney. As far as visual impact, just fitting the AT1 tank will change the whole appearance of the bike.....it'll be instantly recognisable as a DT1, the other more interesting things like the Hindall frame and Gary Jones handlebars will only become noticable when you look a little closer. The true trickness of the bike should creep up on you in a subtle way.

I'd put pictures up of the bike as it appeared at CD8 but I'm a little embarrassed that it turned out so....errr...ugly, especially when compared to my other bikes. When she comes back as a proper DT1, albeit with an aftermarket frame, I think you'll understand what I was trying to do and should hopefully like the finished product.

I fount by acident this week some yz style pit bike pegs that fitted on my DT1 and some arrow kart springs that work perfectly the things are subtle but wider under foot and snap back like a mouse trap.

Some time its the simple things that work and are so impressive.

If i was to make any comment i would say bail the side covers and maybe the fr guard etc. the bike looks kinda pointy andera bitsa.

its lost that fat pre 70 look.
kinda look more like a 73 MX 250 ??  and you have lots of them already

Hey Mark.....dont forget the racing stripes down the middle of the guards.....sets them off I reckon.

Ok after all that work on the tank , one thing I do have is DT1 tanks I think about 6 or 7 . How about white with a red stripe as on the works dt1 at Isle of mann 1970 , (page 33 Yamaha Dirtbikes by Colin Mackellar) with red front guard . Freaky the left side cover is dt2mx but the right side cover looks bad without a up pipe . I'm open to ideas for the front guard

the tanks Ok for a racer, but with all th eother pointy bits i see what firko is saying, you need to round off the other bits if you use a pointy tank

in that cataloge Freaky,
chapter 13,
the MX5 series ;)
and my tank is a DT/RT1 tank although the smaller AT/CT/LT style tank can be made to fit with a bit of a tickle 'n' slap and has the same look, slimmer with less feul for the serious racer.
i reckon the DT1 style tank is more "testicle" friendly ;) when compared to the DT2 style.
a blokes gotta think of these things :D

Ok gents Ive heard your thoughts on the DT1 tank , Had a think about it and your right . the tank on it at the moment is just to get the idea , the real tank is getting sprayed ,white with red stripe down the centre with the 68 red backed Yamaha tank badges. After listening to you lot the guards had to go . rear is a ? found it in my stash ,front is a mk 7 bultaco .                                 (http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m612/Iain_Cameron/DSC_0086.jpg)                                                       (http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m612/Iain_Cameron/DSC_0087.jpg)                                                       (http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m612/Iain_Cameron/DSC_0089.jpg)

Very nice Iain, please keep us posted on the progress of this rebuild.

Keep it up guys,love it.

Looking good Iain...it's starting to look like a serious class contender now. Is the frame lowered? I'm toying with the idea of machining up a couple of DT1 frame kits if there's enough call for them. I like the nicely cut down clutch activator cover...neatly done. I'm disappointed I had to can my trip to the Nats so I'll have to wait until next years inaugural pre '78 Nats in Queensland to debut my Cheney and Hindall Yams in the class. It's up to you to fly the old Yamaha flag in pre '70 this year mate.

My new DT1 is also well on its way .The motor is now finished new bearings, seals, conrod and undercut gears looks really good . Frame sand blasted and repainted with Satin Black 2 pack (run out of time for powder coating) Now I have to start putting the motor in the frame and finish with a bassoni pipe Hopefully I will get it together for a trial run at our club day 1 week before the nats. fingers crossed

Looking good Iain. The bike really looks the goods with that quasi early YZ [paint job, I really hope it all goes well for you at Crystal Brook. I've been tidying my garden shed and have rediscovered all of the missing bits so I can put the DT1 from Hell back together with a stock engine, the hotty methanol engine's in the Hindall. It's tempting, especially after seeing yours. It's make a fun Classic Dirt bike with the stockish motor :).

Hi Guys,
She lives the DT1 We have been working on for the Nats for a few weeks finally fired it up last night,
changed the stator and tow started it. Once we cleared all the shit out of the pipe carby etc it now starts off the kick starter. Now we need to play with the jetting we think it is running a bit lean and is pinging abit down low.
I have some picts but I have never put picts on before so I am unsure how to do it.

On a different bike my 73 Elsinore 250 that I have entered in the age group racing and a sub for the pre75 250 class didnt make one full lap of practice on Sundays grasstrack and stopped and ceased solid. Last nights investigations found that the fly wheel nut had come off and the fly wheel had sheered the key off but the worst part was that it had also taken a large chunk of the crank off as well. Never seen anything like that before any way my good mate and bike mechanic is going to rebuild it yet again as soon as I can get the spare crank to him.  We are now starting to run out of time need to test and load them up on Sunday leaving on the boat Tuesday for the Small Island up north

Cheers
Fatboy

Im going to have a crack at getting one ready for Crystal brook, wont have time to test so just have to wing it,  just need to score a tank and some guards and should be good to run.  Only full width front end i can find has rooted drum brake sticking, but meh so long as i can get it out there be fun..  :D

if your talking about the width at the top shock mounts, then it'd be about 15~20mm narrower than stock in order to fit the MX type seat.
if thats NOT what your asking, then my mind reading skills have somewhat diminished and you'll need to spell it out in plain eengrish ;D

No probs Nev....I've got access to an old Webco kit  so I'll make an effort to borrow and copy it. It might take a while but I'll announce it on here when they're up and running.

I found these on my photobucket a/c.

Thanks for posting that Graeme, I've been trying to remember which magazine I'd seen it in. I've got a Popular Cycling mag with a similar (but shorter) article as well. I think there's a Dirt Bike article describing the mod too.

Here's the last three. The little box of info is interesting. It compares the wheel base, weight distribution etc of the mods 8).
