It gets even more complex...

510-0***** is 1975 MX400B
510-1***** is 1976 YZ400C
510-2***** is 1976 IT400C

The YZ-C (510-1*****) and IT-C (510-2*****) frames are identical, but the MX-B (510-0****) frame is very slightly different.

All geometry etc is the same, but the MX-B only has one muffler mounting point on the rear frame loop, YZ-C and IT-C have two mounting points.

Tony

(not to mention the obvious swingarm difference of course....)   ::)

Tony the 250 mxb and the yzc 250 used the same idea 509 0xx xxx and 509 1xx xxx
even earlier the yz125 a and yz125 b used the 4th digit differance regards Iain

::)  Bloody Yamaha and their serial numbers...   ;D

It 400c ,I have a IT400c with sn# 1K7 xxx-xxx yes it is a 76 mod Iain

That's a bit odd - 1K7 was the model code for the IT400C, but that only applied to the parts manufactured for the bike..  All the engine/frame numbers I've seen have been 510-2xxxxx...
