Too cool Bing. How did you find a clean rust free XM (or is it XP,I can never remember) ute in tropical Nth Qld? I assume it has upgraded running gear going by the five stud bolt pattern so does it have a V8? I love the period venetian blinds and old school wheels. These old Aussie Falcons are getting as rare as shit as they all rusted away years ago. It's great to see a survivor!

Thanks' Firko, Yea she's a beut, I bought her as is of a guy in Vic, It's an XP & everything is  just about new on it, Glass, Rubbers, Suspention, Disc's etc etc only got a pre crossflow 250 with a 3:23 to 1 diff so it pulls real nice, Iv'e got some good gear that might go into later on , 289 , 8 3/4 diff etc but I'll leave here as it is for a while , It's my 3rd XP ute so you could say Iv'e a bit of a fetish for(http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg258/bingil6/UtePhotos006.jpg) them?

That's one seriously cool car, Bingil.  ;D
How's the engine bay. Where is everything?
Compare that to the shit that's under the bonnet of my '74 Benz coupe.  ???

I spent the first decade of my working life on those things, so I'm used to it. Still ain't fun though............  >:(
I reckon I'll be able hear Firko from here when he sees the shot of the ute with the Maico in the back.  :D
Great stuff!

Bingal Make a hinged piece of C/section to put your bike tyres on and spread the weight load. Your tailgate will love you for it. To nice to buckle and bend it. Cheers Tim.

I used to be able to wedge my old 75 250 Maico in the back of the ute with the tailgate up & it sat in there so snug I could travell all the way to Proserpine without any tie downs, miss that bike.

Tony.....You call that sad little V8 an engine? ::) Now This is an engine! ;D And yes, Bing, changing the plugs on the V12 is an all day job that I usually shop out to my Jag guy who has all of the specially bent plug spanner gizmos to get into those tight spots. Since I fitted the Motek engine management system it doesn't seem to use plugs any more so I haven't had to change them for a couple of years now.....Love the shot of the Maico in the ute. I used to fit my old Maico in my EH ute with the gate closed. Like you and the Falcon, it wedged in and didn't need tie downs!

Tony.....You call that sad little V8 an engine? ::)

 :D :D
All of a sudden, my engine bay looks really quite roomy.  ;D
I remember watching one of our techs doing valves on an old LP400 Lamborghini Countach once.
All the carbs (6 of them) and Christ knows what else had to come off. Can't remember all what he had to do but the service part took him more than 2 days.  ::)
Hey Mark, you must have seriously girly little hands to be able work on that bloody thing.  ;)
Bet it's nice to drive though................  ;D
Title: Re: My new bike transporter
Post by: firko on February 11, 2008, 04:21:49 pm
Tony, I wish I had tiny girly hands to work on it. Unfortunately I have gnarly old boilermaker hands that fit nowhere!
Through a mate I managed to find an old retired Jaguar mechanic who is a walking encyclopedia on the Jag V12 engine. He loves them with a passion and is an old world craftsman who really takes his time but doesn't charge by the hour. He even uses a stethoscope to listen inside while it's running! The Jag is going to him in a month or so to have a 3:55 XJ6 diff fitted so the thing is better around town. The 2:9 diff in it now is a hoot on the freeway for the big speed numbers but it's a tad sluggish around town as it  doesn't come alive until 5000 rpm.  I've only got 2 points left on my licence so I can't take advantage of the speed any more. Yes Tony, it is a nice thing to drive, as your Merc is I'm sure. She passed rego today so she lives on for more on road fun.

No wonder the pommy car industry fell over. The Motec is very high tech unlike you firko, easy conversion?
NIIIIIIIIIIIICCCEEEEEEEE ute BTW
Title: Re: My new bike transporter
Post by: firko on February 11, 2008, 06:34:07 pm
You'd be surprised how Hi tech I can be Lozza. There's more to me than what you read on these pages.
The Motec is actually a bit of a mix'n'match combo of Motec M600 ECU and Wolf wiring harness and injector pump hardware and another unknown brand adjustable exhaust temp sensor. I got the whole set up in a swap for some Chevy go fast bits with a guy who had blown his road racing V12 E type and was going back to running a 6 cylinder. It took a bit of fiddling with the Bosch injectors but once I fitted the adjustable exhaust heat sensor it all started to fall into place. My old mechanic is the genius behind it and I must admit it's far from perfected yet. The engine it came off was out to 6.6 litres and mine is still 5.3 litres so the fuel flow mapping is still a bit out but it now goes like stink and gets  better MPG compared to stock. They reckon it's worth 100 bhp and I wouldn't be surprised. The next mod will be a cold air induction system with K&N filters, similar to what they ran on Gossys Bathurst Jag. Then it will breath (and sound) a lot better. As it is I'm pretty pleased with it. Unfortunately the Jag has the old BW C6 (pre turbo 400) trans which restricts any major improvements. Eventually I hope to fit a Supra 5 speed which should make her a lot nicer to drive.

Jesus Firko, mate I'm a mechanic buy trade but all that spaghetti under the bonnet of that rocket of yours still scares the shit out of me, It surprises me how much trouble those car manufactures go to just to burn a bit of fossil fuel Cheers

That monstrosity is a graphic illustration of what is wrong with the mentality of some of our US friends. You have got to be kidding!!!!

You could make a fortune with 'WANKER' numberplates with this kind of idiot.

F#&king Hell what a KNOB!!! And you will probably find out that this is his small car for the 'wife' to use to go the the mall.

Gee, a bit harsh  :o.

Although I often wonder at the judgment and/or stupidity, and the psychological health and motivation of my fellow humans, I try never to be surprised.

To this guy the object is probably a display of wealth and ingenuity rather than anything practical or needed. Nothing wrong with that I suppose, except how his choices impact on the rest of us.......

Hi Graeme,
Funny I thought I was holding back my true feelings.
I really can't imagine why you would bother, what a useless impractical piece of shite that thing is. I bet it never sees the dirt, and I really love the alloy wheels. Can't have it getting too heavy now can we.

It has been said that your actions speak louder than your words and to me his actions SCREAM - WANKER!!!!!

You have a good point there Tim .  8) . With out knowing his full story I would  not like to judge the man, perhaps he built the whole car himself and hade alot of fun doing so . In VMX we have people riding and collecting Kreidler 50 cc , Hodakas ,Bultacos, KTM , Maicos , Montessas , I even know one looney with a  998 Metisse that he built him self.. Where do you draw the line ? What makes someone a "Wanker" ?

I wouldn't call '350 Cube Man' a Wanker either. But the guy in that photo is another kettle of fish altogether.
He is obviously a really serious 'offroader' the stupid thing doesn't even have a spare tyre.

Wouldn't be first ive seen spare carried in the tray. ::) In fact that truck has a range of tools stored in a tray compartment.

Quicky,
You might be right. But I wouldn't want to try and lift it out alone [let alone put the old one back in].

He is still a knob. Yeah, I know somebody else will build one that is bigger and better. And he will be a knob as well.
VMX42

P.S. I thought the checker plate box under the tray was probably his BBQ. Gotta do something with all that roadkill.
Title: Re: My new bike transporter
Post by: Quicksilver on February 26, 2008, 04:11:09 pm
VMX42. It certainly not the type of truck I personally would build. Nor do I understand why you would other then pure pose value.

I do appreciate workmanship, engineering skills and the quality of finish the overall package. Through my eyes when I look at customs such as that F650 I look more how it was done, the ideas and planning, the new approch and fresh idea rather the copy cat ideas that seem so common. I look at the overall quality of how well the package was put together. Then I question the "why".. :)  I like objects that stand out as "not the same " as all the others even if they are rather useless and overbearing.

Our world is full of cookie cutter Camry drivers that never set foot outside of their comfort zone. This bloke has built a vehicle that is different to say the least. I don't really like the "bigfoot" concept  but I appreciate the engineering and original thinking that has gone into the truck. It might not be your idea of the perfect bike transporter VMX42 but at least he's not a safe and sensible, beige Camry driving accountant, he's branched out from the comfort zone. Because he built a truck that doesn't fit into your idea of what is good and pleasing in the world, it doesn't automatically make him a "knob" or a "wanker". There's just not enough originality left in the world any more.
Title: Re: My new bike transporter
Post by: vmx42 on February 26, 2008, 04:58:40 pm
Hey Quicky,
Yeah I can appreciate quality engineering, but I really don't see much of it in this kind of vehicle. It is totally impractical and more of a cheque book exercise of overbuilt boltons.

I agree, when somebody goes to the trouble of making something that stands out from the crowd their efforts should be applauded, but this kind of vehicle doesn't fit that criteria. There is a whole industry in the US pumping out parts for abominations like this [the bigger and more useless the better, cause you really 28" billet chrome rims on your offroader]. They are more like Camrys in the US than you would believe and he is not unique by any stretch of the imagination. If he was the only one, and did all the work then I wouldn't have bitten, but he isn't, there are 1000's of them. That is not individualism.

When I see a car that the owner has put his [or her] sole into I can appreciate their efforts and I applaud the joy it will bring them, but you can't honestly tell me that this kind of thing fits into that category. I have friends that have some big useless hobbies that give them a lot of joy, but this looks like his everyday ride. I have been to Hot Rod shows and marvelled at the workmanship and dedication of the owners but this thing doesn't fit that category either.

Tim, you are correct, maybe I was harsh calling him a W@%*er [so I won't again]. I try not to be judgemental but this kind of excess [and I can assure you he is not alone by any stretch of the imagination] does annoy me. When the rest of the world has acknowledged that bigger is not better and are taking steps to limit their impact on our planet, the US attitude that 'I will, because I can' says alot about how out of touch they are in a lot of areas.

You guys can't honestly tell me that you wouldn't laugh if you saw that thing coming down the road towards you? Come on! It makes the guy who owns the black Hummer with 28" chromies look like an environmentalist by comparison. I'm all for individualism but this isn't it.

Oh come on Bingil, can't we get revved up sometimes. It's good for us old boys to get the heart racing occasionally.
I am sure he is a lovely bloke, I just hope he doesn't park his truck outside my house [it would block the sun and all the wifes plants would die].

I'll bite my lip, until he shows up with his next, new improved and even bigger model. Enough is enough. I know when I am licked [and as Bill Oddie said] 'it's lovely'.
