I did some arithmetic on the latest project I’m into at the moment and I’m a bit concerned that it isn’t tracking that well! The end result should be a bike that is what I’ve wanted to end up with but the accounting formula doesn’t seem to be all that clear. I have seen some fairly impressive VMX bikes that I’ve set as benchmarks but how pricey have they been and am I in the ball park?

This could turn into a Show & Tell. What are you restoring and how much has the project cost so far?
Last year I restored a 1976 Yamaha YZ250C and has left a gaping hole in my wallet to the tune of just over $9000

Including racing,I reckon about 20-30 K give or take 5K
Not really counting though ;D its all good times 8)
cheers A
-
it all adds up... recently have gone over my bike to the cost of 5 k. thats with wheels, tyres front an rear shocks rebuilt, new fly wheel, paint, sand paper, nuts an bolts, an few other little bits an pieces...

The best thing you can do is not add it up - you'll only get depressed ;) ;D
Worse still your missus may find your calculations :o :o :o
-
What would you know...MOTH BALLS...hehe
-
good thing i dont have a missus ;D

In reality, without lying to yourself, a top resto/race bike will cost you between 5 to 10K, maybe more, depending on what your after.....the blokes that do it for $2.50 dont race and most of them wouldnt last 10 minutes on the track running flat out without having a major hemorage......having said that, everybody has there own budget and ideas on what a restoration/race bike should be. The thing to remember, if it is a race bike and you cut corners then be prepared for constant letdowns and regular wallet flushing. ;) ;D.....remember the moto...do it once, do it right.

I strip mine right down and start from scratch and they cost me between 4 and 5 grand to build up.

Interesting

The only cheap way out is restoring sidecars , they are cheap to buy and between two people shared , they can run with peanuts :D
Haha where do you buy your parts from? ;D
-
True I suppose,
My bike would cost much less if it didn't run!
-
hahaha well now i spent all my dosh on it, i cant afford to run it
-
dont get interested in maicos ,they will send you broke :o
-
Depends on what you are paying for things and a bit of luck. If you are working the room on ebay and other forums and buying of example low hour motors as they come up then you can do OK. If you start with $500 buck shitter that has done its time chasing cows then things will get expensive.
Usually start with good motor or frame as the rest you pitch usually anyway. Most expensive bike so far to build was my HL500 but it was built knowing it would really cost $$$ and owes less than some NOS TT500s I know.
