Title: Show us your mini bike.
Post by: 090 on January 22, 2011, 09:10:17 am
I did a search and couldn't find a thread like this one . Hope I'm not rehashing  :-\
So a lot of us started on a mini and have a soft spot for them, me included. I have said on several occasions that even though I love them, I couldn't bring myself to part with money for one when I can use the money to buy another rider. Well that changed a couple of weeks ago when I bought the Puch that people was trying to pronounce.I have a spare bike in rougher condition that I have decided to keep seeing as these things don't come up very often. This thing is a little ripper and will be a pit bike at CD8. I also bought an xr75 '76 (four speed) which is getting a transformation.I have done a back flip! JohnnyO, get your camera out seeing as you have quite a mini collection as well.
The Puch is made in Austria. I think Arnie's first job was assembling these at his local bike shop  :).

I found one of those little Puch's in a skip bin a few years ago. It was complete and in good nick except for the engine being one solid siezed up mass. I can't remember what I did with it but seem to think I may have given it to a forum member.

Mini's could near do with a forum section of their own I'd reckon. '100cc and Mini's' ;)
Seems nearly every man and his dog has a mini of some description tucked away somewhere and some like me just keep adding to them...

I'm building something a tad different. In line with my love of custom framed bikes, I'm building a Steens powered by a TS90 Honcho engine. Jonesey bought a complete Hodaka Ace 90 powered version and got a spare frame and tank with it which he's donated to the cause. I'm considering using Chonda wheels and USD forks if I can find a donor basketcase pitbike. If not, I'll be needing appropriate 16" and 17" wheels.

It's the early 1980's racers that do it for me. Bristling with technology and very quick. the one i'm doing is costing a bomb but I couldn't care less. When Pre 85 mini's are racing, I'll be ready..... 8)

talk about memories - I had an XR75 like that one JO - and at one point when Dad tried to get me into trials a TY80 as well.  Just like Brad there is no way I could ride one now  ;D but still wouldn't mind a YZ80C to sit in the bar - never did get one as I moved onto 125's - but geez there are some nice bikes there.

I used to have an 81 XR 80 exactly like this. It was in imaculate condition and looked the same as this brochure pic and mainly just had the cosmetics and the top end done 20 or so years ago because the mechanicals were still very good. I kind of wish i still had it, it was such a bullet proof bike.

brother and I started off on a '75 GT80B that ran all day two up with camping gear and all on 60c of fuel. I'm after a brochure or copy of this bike.

then moved on to a YZ80E to cut our teeth on mx (there's that Dato again)

next stop was a brand new YZ80G that I raced in N/E VIC. cost $749 and I still have the Mikkola clock. only have this poor pic to show for it but bought another 80G recently for a future father/son project

Have any of you guys got pics of junior mx racing in N/E Viccy in 79/80/81?

how to tell an expert rider on page 49 :)

:D  We'll have to do a reprint and sell it to some of the non-expert riders  ;) .............You dont see him racing in the pits, showing off or making violent swerves
or
No matter how deserted or smooth a paddock appears,he never throws caution to the wind.Even when there seems little danger of collision, the chaces of hitting a concealed pot-hole or tree stump are high
and
He does not litter the coutryside ,nor cause excessive noise.  :o
Bit like old fashioned etiquette for ladies and children -should be seen and not heard  ;)   ;D  :-X
cheers A

Hey Mark
Nice couple of 80's there. It would be great if you could scan it and email the GT80 brochure for me. Shame they never listed the blue one in the brochure. Do you have any of the MX80 back then too?

I've also been on the look out for this one too, 1980 G models I think.

I used to have this transfer on the back of my Yamaha race jersey. Got it from the t-shirt shop in Albury. One of the IT guys still has an original.

Muddy - nice looking C - I actually got to race one a few times - I had an XR75 with some Bert Kingston bits on it courtesy of the local Honda store - but the YZ would chew me up every time - they were so much faster!

Yeah Ross, I had forgotten about it as it hasn't been out of the shed since 81/82. The frame was specially made by Bozchrome Engineering back in the mid to late 70's and I built the engine in about 78 I think. It is an early 4 speed XR75 which I took out to 100cc. It used to be a lot of fun to ride on any flat area's. I think it's time to resurect it.

Please don't tease me Slakewell  :'(
I still have the back wheel,1 side cover, bits and pieces of the engine.Tank went to darwin in the mid 80's and no idea what happened to the rest of it.
I've always wanted to get it up and running but the major bits are missing..thought about putting a chinka motor in it or my CT90 motor,BUT other stuff gets in the way and DAMN it would be so nice to ride it 30 odd years later :)
All i can ask is...tell me what you have and how much $ ;D

PS...Stan That is one hella of a great bike!

Hey Stan
The tank on that one is worth quite a few bob. My son broke up his junior solo a little while back and I have a freshly restored ct125 motor sitting in the shedatt blacked with polished outer fins. If your looking to get the little girl going and want a motor (is bog stock, but everything new) pm me, very cheap for a Ballarat boy, even cheaper if you're a Saints supporter. Also have a nice little homemade alloy tank if you want to perserve the Jawa one.

I used to have a Fury chromed straight out on my XR75, geez it was loud and tough, it didn't last long though,at the old track we used to ride at we had to cross over train lines, unfortunatley I pancaked the pipe underneath the motor within a couple of weeks, as Fury factory was only down the road from where I used to live the problem was solved ::) I then bought a Fury megaphone, wish I still had both pipes ;D

Hi Miniwheels
I did the same as you as my straight threw pipe got hammered from the chain rubbing on it and ground clearance was a problem so we purchased a Fury Megaphone as well and that fixed the ground clearance problem and it sounded great but when the PK pipes came out well that was the last of the Fury pipes. We also had a Fury cam and manifold (with a 22 mill carb then a 24 mill carb) on the xr as well for a while.
In the early days Fury stuff was great. It was well priced ,with great back up and good to deal with .

Fury Racing Equipment stuff was the go before the Yankee aftermarket stuff took off in a big way, Alfy Bond was a very clever whiz on the minibikes back then, Neville his son told me only a few months go they used to fill there race MR50's crankcases full of pulsawood to build up compression  :o also told me they used to make allot of the FMF stuff when they were distributers for FMF ;)

These are both my daughter's bikes.
First bike is an RM80 '89 model, goes like a rocket.
Second bike is an RM 80 '94 model, goes like a two-legged dog. Needs a bit of work, but it'll be going well soon.

That is the only problem with the yz kx cr rm 80's no bottom end I have a 96 kx80 we got for my little brother but younger kids are too scared to ring it's neck which is the only way to ride them.

the daughters don't ride em hard but the 94 has a few problems frosty i think mostly carby related it uses more fuel than my kx 125(see show us your trailbike).the 89 model goes real hard even give me a bit of a scare sometimes but its great fun to ride.the 89 mod also has later rear guard and side covers and had motor rebuild and all bearings and bushes except head stem done not long before i bought it.cheers gary

my RM80B (see below) has bugger-all bottom-end and then comes on the pipe like a light-switch.
Will not let my 5-yr-old son attempt to ride it for a while yet.  Doc... a JR50, perhaps?

Even a ds80 perhaps Luke pretty tame bikes or if you do up a mx80 or gt80 they are very good mini bikes and they dont care if you flat change them so they are a real good learner bike as are the z50's.;)

Your RM80b looks great too.

I have instructed my brother to get right up on the tank and ring the kx's neck so his weight is over the front wheel he was going better last time we went riding if they go slow they just flood them.

My mate has a xr75 ko and it flys I used to have a z50 with st70 motor it was my first bike and it was great fun.

:D it's a wonder I didn't kill myself when I purchased my RM80B Luke. They really do go well up top eh ;D to move from that up to a 400C I must have had flamin' a death wish! :D The YZ80D to me felt a far more sedate bike to ride and didn't come on the band so hard. Still quick but not as snappy and they had low down power. JR's are very small although they do make a JR80's as well as the DS's. A guy on a big wheel Rm was getting around Connondale quite okay at CD7 last year ;)

VERY nice looking RM80B Luke, and with it's kickstand too!

:D jeez Mario, you're fast! The PE headlight is still tucked up under the house and hasn't moved. Tomorrow is a big day..a day off finally! ;D Here's a plan..Luke sent me boxes and boxes of all shapes and sizes of 80 bits..well, not all shapes..they're actually all rectangular but varying sizes..anyway, I'll send the headlight in a box of suitable size to fit an RM80 bottom end ;) plan A! that'll give me some more incentive and save the tree's ::)

This be my RM50N (T tank). I have replica N front guard now courtesy of Matcho Mick's fine glassing skills. As soon as I get a matching rear the rest will be finished off with all the rusty bits replated to bring it up to a nice rideable standard. I have a pilot just frothing at the bit but it's a bit of a step up from the JR50 he's learning on at present ;) I think he'll like it..I know I would have!! ;D

must eventually get a seat cover for the 80X parked beside it too :D

My first bike - 77 XR75 K4. I got it 2nd hand when I was about 9 or 10. My dad bought it off my uncle and it was about 2 years old old and had hardly been used. It was then progressively trashed over the next 15 years by me and later by my younger brother and sisters.  I fully restored it a few years ago. NOS side covers cost me a mint!

Here is the 73 KO XR75 mini of my youth parked outside at the family homeplace (where I terrorized the hood) ;D, stored in the  basement till about 4 years ago...I decided to dig it out.  Parents saved everything.!!!  I ran it really hard and even raced it a few times. Slowly it came around,  as I  had  a bit of work and good deal of parts hunting actually to bring the little mini back to life. The engine (amazing) is still running on the original bore , and has never been apart.  The whole bike is 100% original Honda parts , including 95% of the frame paint is factory black.  I lucked out finding several tuff items for this project ... I replaced the original rusty/bent/bashed gas tank  with a practically NOS tank that was in fact a long forgotten warrenty take off from a dealer in FL who found it stashed away in their service building loft since 1973 ..LoL...Turned out, all it needed was a thin copper washer to seal the petcock to tank . This was (only flaw I could find), suppose it was easier to replace it than figure out why it leaked and fix it. ;)  I polished out the original chrome rims, spokes and handlebars. Added htf NOS KO fenders , grips, lever covers, side & front NOS Number plate and rare NOS Honda rubber tipped levers .  Restored the ol exhaust pipe/muffler best I could . Used all new Honda bolts, springs, cotter pins ect, and a new set of vintage Chen sen knobbies. I still have the original covered KO seat with tools still attached and a prized NOS skid plate stored away ,for inside display one day.  I keep a recovered seat and beat ol skid plate so I can still ride a bit .  Fun to ride after all these years., yea..  It was much faster when I weighted 100 pds. ;D

Nice little XR75 you have there Mr Pilot 8) whilst I find it all but compulsory to have a mini or several I think it's even better when it is the actual bike from all those years ago ;) I still have my original RM80B from 1977 and I'll probably die with it still in my possession :D Of the several mini I own I do have the obligatory XR75 though mine infact is an '82 XR80 in an '83 YZ80K chassis.

Thanks.  Sounds like you have the same sentimental attachments.  I also love all the Yamaha YZ bikes as well.

I had grown my hair a bit too long for my fathers taste in those days , otherwise I did ok in school and he out-voted my mothers stance (he'll break his neck :D)  on getting a mini cycle to replace the first minibike.

So...I went (without fuss) to local barber shop one afternoon Dec 1972 with my father ., the next stop was the local Honda dealer .  8)

Yep !! your right ..Thanks  OMG ...the tube is turned around..HAA!!! too funny ....I'll fix it next trip...I just never noticed , but the bike stays 300miles away from were I live year around.  Thats why it took me so long finish it.  I only got to see it about every 5-8 weeks for a few days at a time. And really only a couple people have seen it since I finished it up at the beginning of this summer.  I would gather up parts and then work on it a few hours a day until next trip.

I had a extra NOS cover and sold it few months back.  m they are hard to get. The hardest part for me was hands down a NOS skid plate...... I won't say what I paid , but I need my head examine. LoL ......the NOS front number plate was tuff too as were the OEM Rubber Tipped Honda levers.

KO 75 is my favorite mini for sure.............dang !! just wait...I'll fix those tubes.....Hee hee

HI,

The KO throttle was unique .  It was a two piece black  assembly.  It is hard to find NOS .......but here is the link where I got mine in Europe .  There were almost out of these when I got mine.  It was the only place on the planet that still has any NOS parts for the KOXR75 .

http://www.cmsnl.com/

Also..... I see a barn find KO75 on eBay that appears to have the correct throttle on it !!! You would have to email the seller , I imagine he would sell anything off this bike.

The first picture i'm posting is of my 1992 Rm 80 which i raced for a couple of years as a junior and i think we sold it in 1996, I was looking at this picture the other day and i thought i wonder if there are any on ebay so i had a look and low and behold i found my old bike a bit worse for wear but it is definately my old bike still has the black gripper tape on the side plates dad got from the 1992 ISDE and put on my bike and the disc guard , I think this colour scheme with the purple splatter on the seat and the multi colours were a bloody good looking bike , the second photo is what the bike looked like last saturday when i picked it up , I also have a Rm 50c 1978 model i'll try and get a photo of it next time i dig it out.

My father bought me a Deltek-Gemini 65cc from Waltons department store in 1972. It looked similar to the one below but had a Gemini badge on the tank rather than the SST one.
All my mates were on Mini Trails at the time, out at Jim Airey's mini bike club at Fairfield NSW.
The 2 stroke Gemini had a clutch and 4 speed box (4 up from memory) and used to leave the mini trails for dead..

Just a heads up for those interested. This is listed on the AKRF site.

Quote
I am looking to trim my collection

As such I am selling off 4 of my Mt-1 Kawasaki's, including an almost impossible to find 1971 model with the external springs fitted to the front forks.

All bikes require restoration, but are in fairly good condition overall, you will be able to build 2 good bikes out of the 4, maybe even a third.

I am open to offers, but am not prepared to give them away as I am not pressed for room simply have other more important projects that require funding.

Bikes are all located in Hahndorf in SA, contact me for more info on 0430356990

It is a home made mini speedway bike, made by my dad, that I got when I was 5. October 1968 was my first ride and I ploughed it into a fence. The bike is now 44 years old and my daughter rides it. The motor is a cycle master front wheel push bike motor, 2 stroke. Best part is I have 2 complete spare motors.

Have a look at this video of a 1948 mini Speedway bike, if ya haven't seen it already.

The young fella in the 1948 video is Howard Cole who was responsible for the Cole Speedway motors in later years

First new bike in Dec 1972 , a Deltek Gremlin 65 ( basically a rebadged Gemini ) .
An earlier post PCMAX mentioned his new Gemini DB65 came from Waltons in Sydney . That is one standing next to my Deltek 65 . Less than 1000 of the three types of 65cc Geminis were produced . The other 65cc model produced by SST was the Cox Deluxe 65 , again another rebadged Gemini . All of these 3 models are very rare .  The difference between the 65's and 50's were the handlebars , seats , tanks , crankshafts and top ends of the engines . Engine / frame numbers all began with M65 instead of M5 with the 50cc models . My bike came from Stebbins in North Melbourne , It was a great bike and l rode the wheels off it for a couple of years never missing a beat .;D Hodaka ,,,

G'day Rick is that the same Godden you had late 80's early 90's?
Title: Re: Show us your mini bike.
Post by: RW490 on January 04, 2013, 12:28:04 pm
Hey Hoony

The first Godden that I rode was purchased in 1990 and I did it up and later sold it to Shane Clare.
It was in a Jawa frame.

The bike shown is an original Godden in a Godden frame Nickel plated. This was anthony Keys old bike. When I checked the engine number I found that Kevin McDonald had sent me the wrong motor. After checking the engine number and supplied spec sheet for the first motor I purchsed it was found that Anthony had recieved my motor by mistake.

This is the actual motor that I should have recieved in 1991.

I retired in 1992 and bought this bike in 1998. I rode Myrtleford that season and 1 or 2 undera`s and then sold to my Brother-inlaw. I went sidecar racing and and then retired again. I bought this bike back of my Brother inlaw in 2011. Not a bad history from 1991/1992 hey.

Also check out Vintage Track>Hagon Front Shock / damper for the history of Dads Bultaco Hagon.
Its an interesting read.

Man that Freakshow is a sneaky bugger.

That's him, Rick. The team he's riding for is Cradley United aka Cradley Heathens which is currently operating as Dudley Heathens.
The chains and anvil on their body colours reflect the industry around that part of Birmingham. From the very early days chain making and nail making were major industries in Cradley Heath, later body colours featured an anvil and a lump hammer, and the teams fans  warcry was " Hommer 'em Craydley"

Quite a few Aussies rode for Brum teams, Carl Askew and Glenn MacDonald spring to mind.
I am a Brummie and many years ago , my family had a small connection with Birmingham Perry Barr track which Howard rode at sometimes.

Birmingham folks, " Brummies" , speak differently to other Poms, Birmingham comes out as "Brummagem", just ask Slides, he's heard some Brummie talk !!!

I see Kiwi Bruce Cribb is in the shot, not many people know that Bruce was a shit-hot Ice Racer in Europe and Scandinavia

Thanks for that Foss.
I think I got the picture from Classic Dirt Track Images. When you said the name it rang a bell and I went back and copied the photo. How good is that, he was a young lad in the video and followed his dream and rode as a proffessional speedway rider when he grew up.

I read a write up one day that said Bruce Cribb rode his Ice bike at a speedway track demo and was 2 to 3 seconds a lap quicker than the track record using his spikes.

Found one of these Honda Z50's today,  in bits but seems to almost complete except seat and carbi.  Looks like a good project,  if the bloke agrees to sell.
Anyone tell me what year.

Shes a 60s model without the front suspension. First model was the cz100 in 1961 but this has a different tank. Pre 69 for sure (they had rudimentary front suspension)

Engine / frame numbers all began with M65 instead of M5 with the 50cc models . .;D Hodaka

I have an incomplete M65 if anybody is interested. VIN  M65 00411.
Missing tank, seat, wheels & probably lights (can't remember)

PM me if interested

A couple of photos of my new toy, it's a little rough and missing some bits but will still be a nice thing when I get it finished.  The front wheel is not right and the motors that came with it are 50cc but later models, it needs to be an early pushrod motor same as the early step through Honda's ran.

Just finished tidying this up. Bought it off EBay, and the seller was Gooldy from on here. Mechanically it was excellent with a new rod kit, bearings, re bore, piston, rings etc. Cosmetically it was pretty challenged. I was going to just fix it up so the young bloke could ride it, but as things go I ended up completely stripping it and powder coating and plating. Found some good plastics to go with the NOS guards. Sort of turned out a bit of a resto with lots of NOS parts going into it, but I am really happy with how it turned out and it makes it a lot nicer for the young bloke to ride.

Hey hardex, I had one of those Honda 50's was my first mini bike. Dad bought it for me from graham sword Yamaha when I was 4 years of age. I sold it in 2002 for $7500.00 still have the rego plate for it when dad use to ride it to the council chambers for me to ride around  and photos. I was told only 20 where brought to Australia and used at shows for kids to hire.   ;D

Bitten no even mx and dt80 were all steel so unless he finds a second hand one or a plastic tank from even something else the frame is fairly skinny I am sure some thing else would drop on.

heres one but any wreckers is a good chance of having one as there were heaps of dt gt mx 80's about just make sure you run a inline fuel filter they seem to get little bits flick through and block the carb jets which are tiny.

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Yamaha-MX80-petrol-gas-fuel-TANK-steel-has-repair-/261237465518?pt=AU_Motorcycle_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3cd2f761ae&_uhb=1

you can pick up a rough gt mx or dt 80 for bugger all too so worth considering that.

I'm in the process of building an XR80/CR80 hybrid at the moment. Not the usual XR motor in a CR frame but a mish mash of both frames. I'll work on uploading photo's to here one day! I reckon it looks factory and would of been a great XR for Honda to have built in 1980....
