I have made up some quiz questions for a bit of fun,I,ll start with a fairly easy one! Which rider was the only person to win F.I.M. world mx champs in all three classes,125cc,250cc & 500cc?tell us the brand of bikes ridden for extra bragging rights,go for it!
-
I hate to break the news to you SMED, but two riders have done the deed.
The first was Eric Geboers, who won the 125 title for Suzuki 1982/83, and the 250 [87] and 500 titles for Honda in 1988 and 1990.
Sefan Everts was the second. He also won the 125 title for Suzuki in '91, the 250s in '95, 96 and 97 [Kawasaki and Honda respectively]. He won the 500 class in 2001 and 2002. And the MX1 class from 2003 to 2006 all on Yamaha.
Everts also holds the record for the most GP titles and races. He also won the MX1, MX2 and MX3 classes on the same day to be the only rider in history to win 3 GPs in a single day.
And Jeff Ward, Mike Kiedrowski and Ricky Carmichael are the only ones to achieve a similar feat in the US. With both Ward and Carmichael also winning the Supercross title. 2 for Ward and 5 for the GOAT.
Back to you…
But sadly nobody ever won on a World MX title on a Montesa :(
-
You're on the ball 42...
-
Ah, but who was the first rider to win gee pees in all three classes?
-
Yeah ya got me there 42,I should have said in my question the 2 stroke era only as thats what i was thinking of! o.k. heres another, go to the ning photo section,I have put up 3 shots of a famous aussie rider on a tm250,who is it?come back here with an answer sorry i dont know how to put pics on here!
-
Rossi.
Won all three GP classes.
-
Steve Gall..
-
Spot on JohnnyO,
I have a signed, framed poster size print of Steve on the TM on my office wall. It just shows that everybody has a 'dark side' in their past that they don't talk about. ;)
Well spotted.
-
Yeah Gally,I was surprised when i came across the mag with that article & then read the caption on who the rider was!O.K. another question.Name the riders who won both world mx & U.S. mx champs,no f.i.m or ama supercross or mx des nations wins just world & us mx senior champ winners, extra kudos for bike brands, years etc
-
Albertyn on Suzuki and Langston on KTM in Europe and Yamaha in the US.
-
there needs to be a few more provisos on this though - NO JOHNNY O or VMX42!!!!! ;D
-
yeah thats two of em JohnnyO,who are the others?
-
Jean Michel Bayle of course.. I was thinking Townley and Pichon but they only won SX titles in the US.
-
Oh yeah.. Forgot about Lackey and La Porte, both won world titles in '82 to go with their AMA titles..
-
Correct JohnnyO,go to the top of the class! Heres one for the go slow brigade.who was the pommy trials rider who rode through the sections with his gob wide open?Looked like he was trying to catch flies,at least in the pics & video footage i have seen of him!
-
Well, can't have been Don Smith, as he was too busy smoking ! Do you mean Sammy Miller ?
-
Well, can't have been Don Smith, as he was too busy smoking ! Do you mean Sammy Miller ?
Give that man a cocont.
Another plonker question. The Lampkins have produced lots of highly successful riders, but what ended John-Boys (Arthurs son) world career?

I don't think the GOAT got a 500 title, he was still on a 65 when the last one ran....think Larocco won it in '93 and I don't think Keidrowski ever won a 250 title either. Jeff Ward is the only rider to ever win a title in each class.
-
Another plonker question. The Lampkins have produced lots of highly successful riders, but what ended John-Boys (Arthurs son) world career?
It's a killer this one. Literally so. John boy was asleep on the back seat of a car returning from an indorr when the car was centre puched by a bike travelling at a stupid speed. Two guys in the front were fine but the bike ended up buried in Johns hip. The time he had to spend away from the world circus killed his world championship aspirations. The guy on the bike was killed.
OK, who's this (Dave you should get it):
-
Is it Malcolm Rathmell?
-
Nah. It's Nigel Birkett.
-
Ah crap! ;D. I obviously know jack about trials.heres another one with loose vmx connections,Who was the 500cc world roadrace champion who started out on Bultaco?
-
Barry Sheene
-
correct GD66.
-
Seen a vid of Bazza on a Sherpa. Probably on youtube.
What's Sete Gibernaus middle name?
-
Isn't he a Bulto ? Nephew of Paco from Bultaco if I recall.
-
Isn't he a Bulto ? Nephew of Paco from Bultaco if I recall.
I'm running out of coconuts. He's Pacos grandson.
-
While we're in the area, who was the first rider to put a two-stroke on a 500cc World Championship rostrum ? ???
-
Bengt Aberg?
-
Sorry, meant GP roadracing. :-[
Reckon you'd be right, though...
-
Gotta go out, to (how unusual !) a bike club meeting, the answer is kiwi Ginger Molloy who rode a 360 Bultaco to third in the Spanish Grand Prix of 1969.
And now, back to the studio... ;)

Evo,
You are 100% correct about the GOAT. My mistake, I have real trouble thinking of a 450 not being an open class bike [and winning what is actually the 250 title] - so, no the GOAT never won the 500 title. My appologies, I'm gettin' old!!! ;)
But MXKied did win all 3. 125 in 89/91, 250 in 1993 and the 500 in 1992. As you said the 500 class was discontinued in 1993 with Mike LaRocco as the final holder of that title and nobody can therefore win all 3 after that date.
Great stuff

Paul fredrichs
-
Ah, but who was the first rider to win gee pees in all three classes?
If we are talking motocross, which is what this forum is supposed to be about (not road racing), then I think that the first rider to win GPs in 125, 250 & 500 classes was Dutch sand specialist : Kees van der Ven.
-
I'm back with another, What was the first Honda off road production dirt machine released to the public to come with racing style front & side numberplates?
-
I'm going to go out on a limb and say XR75k0
-
Once again o'show you are spot on,the little xr came out in late 72 & the cr250m came out early 73,I have just put a pic on the ning photo section who is the rider doing the gnarly clicker?
-
That's before my time but looks a bit like DeCoster.
-
Yep it's Roger D, Heres one for the enduro guys, where was the 1982 ISDE held?
-
I thought the O show was banned from the quiz?...quick, someone go around to his house and tape his fingers up so he cant type!!! ;D
-

Today is a new day and a new quiz!!
-
Yep it's Roger D, Heres one for the enduro guys, where was the 1982 ISDE held?
i will take a stab and say Wales ( don't know why but i recall a club member going to wales in that era)
-
Question....what was the first year Kawaski won a world championship (MX) and who was the rider.
-
1978 Torlief Hansen . Unlike Johnny O the walking mx Wikipedia, I had to google it.
-
Pretty sure Torlief never won a world title..
-
::) Doh! Smart arse. He got second. Seems it was Tortelli in '96.
-
How about, which country has the most world titles combined (125,250,500,mx1,2 and 3)
-
Have to say Belgium
-
Yep. By far more. I have no idea btw except I have all the stats in front of me.
-
With riders like Rahier, Robert, DeCoster, Everts snr, Jobe, Geboers, Smets and Everts jnr, all multi world champs, i figured it'd have to be Belgium!
-
told ya JO shoulda been banned :P
-
Hey Johnny O ...
How about how many times Broc Glover won in AMA ??
cheers
-
I think he won 5 titles all up in the 125 and 500 classes.
-
6 :P
Only surpassed by the Goat
-
Close..
Strangely Broc is not really known one of the all time greats compared to Hannah, Bailey, Johnson, Ward, MC and RC.
-
ahh come on you guys sit there with Wikipedia page open like me ;D
125 cc----77,78,79
then went on the big bores for a win 81,83,85 500cc.............Six ...090 you is a champion still :D :-*

You guys is cheatin...
They were 500 2 strokes back in Broc's day.
-
This is becoming a Queenslanderthon (geez thats a big word)....you would have thought Kawasaki would have won a title before 96.....even Husaberg beat them and they had only been making bikes for 5 minutes.....lots of 2nd's and 3rd's though. I guess the green team being the baby of the 4 biggies and not being able to "buy" titles like the other 3 doesnt help....I wonder how much money Honda spent in the 80's buying ALL the top riders?...my, my how times have changed......now KTM are throwing it back in the japs faces....and leading the way with technology. ;D. Anyway, thanks for the answer because I didnt have a clue!! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
-
I think Kawasaki were pretty unlucky.. They nearly won titles with Hansen, Lackey, Jobe & Thorpe.
Most of them won titles on other brands.
-
Yep it's Roger D, Heres one for the enduro guys, where was the 1982 ISDE held?
chechoslovakia , 1983 was wales
-
6 :P
Only surpassed by the Goat
Oh come on, Sir Bradalot,
Don't forget, Hannah 6, Ward 7 and McGrath 8 and from memory Johnson got 7 as well. And then as you say there is the GOAT, but he was just showing off… :D
-

Dogger Ron Lechien

Little proffesor David Bailey
Party boy ?
The flyin hawaian John De Soto
Too tall Mike Bell.
Can I have my coconuts back?
-
revhead, Johnson?
-
sorry Revheads was an enduro/desert rider, does that make it easier?
-
Wasn't Johnson 'party boy' as well?
-
Johnson was Bad Boy, Determined was written on aussie future mr mx nylons.
-
Determined was written on aussie future mr mx nylons.
HOW THE BLOODY HELL AM I SUPPOSED TO KNOW THAT?
OK, I'll get even, multi SA (South African) and British MX champ Rob Herrings dad had quite a lot of experience of GPs. How did he get that experience?
-
Determined was written on aussie future mr mx nylons.
A young Jeff Leisk
-
Here's another one. It's nearly Roof of Africa time so: For the last two years a Kiwi has won the Roof (Chris Birch), but an Aussie has won it. Who was he?
-
sorry Revheads was an enduro/desert rider, does that make it easier?
Phil Lovett?
-
Was the roof of Africa won by Murray Watt?, You are right O,show,Leisk & Lovett.I dunno about Herrings dad Tim was he a works mechanic?
-
Yup to Murray Watt and on the nail with Herrings dad too. He was Jim Redmonds mechanic.
-
Going off topic, Jim Redmond is an interesting character. He was shipped out to Rhodesia by his parents during WWII like many UK kids were to Aus. There he was, 14 yo, having to earn a crust in a foreign country AND raise his kid brother and sister. In the midst of all this responsibility he still managed to carve out a career as, arguably, the greatest grand prix rider in history.
Respect Jim. You deserve it.
-
You will be deluged by Rossi fanboys for saying that, but much as I admired Hailwood as a youngster, Redman was my hero for being not just the works Honda team captain, but for being arguably the first of the true professional GP riders. We were lucky he came to Perth in 2003 for the historic roadrace nats, gave us an enthralling live stage interview, then celebrated his 72nd birthday by crashing while demoing a CBR600 and breaking his collarbone, the poor bugger. A good lad !
-
Wasn't Party Boy: David Armstrong?
-
Here's another one. It's nearly Roof of Africa time so: For the last two years a Kiwi has won the Roof (Chris Birch), but an Aussie has won it. Who was he?
Sorry Tim,
But no Aussie has ever won the 'Roof'. Honest Muz is a Kiwi through and through!!

-
You will be deluged by Rossi fanboys for saying that
I am a Rossi fanboy! Give Vale his due, he acknowledges the sports history. Like carrying a banner that said "Sorry Mike" when he exceeded Hailwoods grand prix win total.
I met Jim. Once. Briefly. I shook His hand.
-
Sorry Tim,
But no Aussie has ever won the 'Roof'. Honest Muz is a Kiwi through and through!!

Hang on (this may take some time..) will check over at e-dirt in SA.

Toon Karsmakers and Mike Tripes.

Yes
-
OK you buggers, how about some sidecar questions!
And try to keep it VMX, this wandering off into road raging is beyond most of us.
All very entertaining though.
BTW Ginger molloy made a chamber for my MT125 back in the day so I could scream all the way to work in the mornings. :D
-
OK you buggers, how about some sidecar questions!
How many wheels does a sidecar have?
Is that what you meant? :D
-
Yeah that's more like it-and how many passengers does it take to do a lap and wotz a leading link-that sort of stuff-really hard questions.
-
Sorry Tim,
But no Aussie has ever won the 'Roof'. Honest Muz is a Kiwi through and through!!
VMX42
I'll yield on this one. I thought Murray was an Aussie. So, you're right, no Aussie has ever won the roof.

Yeah smed, it might be Clarrie and I thought maybe Wallan after I had posted the answer.
Do you know if it was 74 or 75? I can dig up the program.
Regards Stan.
-
Sorry Stan, dont know the year,I got the pic out of a book called Motorcycling in Aust by Lester Morris, the only thing was the book says printed in 76, I,ts got a few cool old mx pics in it as well as road stuff,I searched through my book & mag collection to find something on sidecars for EML.cheers

jim colligan i believe passed on a few years a go. got on the piss with him big time whilst doing the swan series(road racing)as a passenger on A TRANZAC TZ750 ROAD RACE OUTFIT 87 i think had a video shop in ballarat?
-
It looks to be about 1974-75 and the gear that the passenger is wearing is just what Jim used to wear, and I dont remember Steve having another passenger in that period, maybe wrong

Ok let’s forget the three wheelers and the (pair) or idiots who try and control them...
Enough about winners...
Q1 Who finished second in the 1985 US Supercross championships,
Bonus points - why?
Q2 For the euro obsessed, who finished second in the 1984 125 World Championship?
Huge bonus points - Why did he finish second?
What bike brand did he ride?
Love, Rudy

-
Wardy won in '85.
Would it have been Bailey?
I got some. What brand was the only non jap bike to win an ama supercross title and when?
Also who upset McGraths winning streak of championships between his first one and his last one. First one being '93 and last being '00.
Which brand of bike has won the most championships?
-
Hey Brad, you're wrong. Who finished second?
It was Broc Glover. Why did he finish second - because Jeff Ward wasn't penalised for riding backwards on the track at one round and the AMA killed off an appeal by Yamaha – even though they DQ’d Magoo Chandler for the same thing the year before.
He ended up loosing by 2 points. If rules were rules he is my defacto champ. Interestingly if he had won the title would he have been considered a GOAT as he would have had 7 championships.
Corrado Madi broke his leg in the final round in a collision during timed practice. Amazing picture of him on a stretcher in MXA.
He rode a Cagiva.
Extra Credit to know who he collided with.
-
Jammin Jimmy Ellis u.s. sx champ 1975 on can-am,Fro Emig u.s.sx champ 1997 Kawasaki,Honda would have won the most sx champs i would think.
-
You see Evil Rudy, you become too one eyed riding solos.
How many GP's did 4 time world sidecar cross champion Hansi Bachtold win during his career?
What was his passengers name and/or what does it translate to in english?
What make/configuration/capacity engine did they use?
At what age did current world champion Daniel Willeimsen start riding sidecarcross?
What year did a 'lightweight' first win a world title?
-
You see Evil Rudy, you become too one eyed riding solos.
I'm a bit with Rudy, like me he's from NSW (Overlooking his NY heritage) where motocross sidecars have never really been a part of the sport. To us mx sidcars are as familiar as motoball or whatever it is those weirdos do with ferrets.
Having said that, I like 'em (sidecars, not ferrets). ;D
-
Who was the 1982 and 83 world MX Sidecar Champion rider and who is his more famous cousin?
-
Who was the 1982 and 83 world MX Sidecar Champion rider and who is his more famous cousin?
I'll go "Bowl Holder"
#8
-
Did he only win twice-I thought he was better then that!
And I have seen some very large crowds at modern sidecar GPs, especially in Latvia and Estonia.
I reckon it's also Hollands biggest moto sport but I could be wrong.
How much horsepower does a Jumbo have and what did they weigh.Common Wally-- get the scales out :D
-
Who was the 1982 and 83 world MX Sidecar Champion rider and who is his more famous cousin?
That wasn't 'Hertz Van Rental' and his brother 'Avis' was it? :D
-
Dear, dear, sweating mother of Jesus... we've been hi-jacked by the third wheel.
I'd rather be one eyed than have someone standing next to me on an MX track while we're moving! Isn't MX by definition a sport of two wheels?
I am willing to admit to racing three wheelers in the 80s - during the winter, but that just made me the dumb one. When two people try and race on the same three wheeler does that make them retarded or a quorum?
I’m willing to try anything – twice even, but someone has to be dumber than me to be the monkey, cause I don’t let anyone drive me (at least since prison).
Man love,
Rudy
-
Isn't MX by definition a sport of two wheels?
Not at all. The FIMs consignment of the sports three wheeled variants is an historical crime IMO. Until the early sixties sidecars were a huge part of motorcycling. A young fellow started his apprenticeship, bought a cheap and cheerful motorcycle on hock (a James or Francis Barnett for example), finished his apprenticeship and bought a bigger motorcycle so he and his "lady" could have transport. Marriage followed and so did kids and a sidecar was attached. This was the way of things. The Morris Mini ended this and the motorcycle combination became a quaint anachronistic oddity. As an American you wouldn't have been exposed to this, the US's boom economy in the fifties neatly sidestepped this stage. When motorcycling boomed again in the early '80's it was as a luxury not a means of transport and the sidecar combination wasn't invited to the party.
Make no mistakes sidecars are part of the sport and, IMO, should be accorded more respect than most afford them. Grand Prix sidecar racing has always been an absolute spectacle with the cameraderie between the teams evident.
You could argue that MX sidecars are the only discipline, VMX excluded, still riding "real" MX.

You could argue that MX sidecars are the only discipline, VMX excluded, still riding "real" MX.
[/quote]
The mid 70's to early 80's I saw some of the best racing you would ever see in Sidecar racing in Australia with the top riders and passengers putting on tremendous racing with up to 30+ Sidecars on the line and they do deserve there place in VMX racing now,

IMO is like "with respect", absolute horse hockey. You might as well say "You have no f#cking idea what you're saying and it doesn't matter if I'm right, IMO I must be".
Sometimes you guys suck the life out of trying to take the piss... too serious. What's happening to Australia.
Walt - the only swinger I knew of was John Holmes - look where it got him.

Look at my avatar Rudy ;) I have the wings. Tim754

I was just trying to keep my posting uncontroversial. Anyway as a New Yorker you'd have no understanding of tact or diplomacy. ::)
-
I'm glad we sorted that out Timmy.
-
John Holmes and Evil Rudy on an MX Sidecar?
Both wearing "Gimp" suits. The appeal is enormous,as would be the crowd.
Now all we need is a time machine to make it happen. RIP Johnnie.

That would give ER something extra to hang on to ;D ;D ;D

That's the Marty Tripes factory Honda that was claimed by privateer John Roeder during the '79 nationals when the AMA had a claiming rule. The rules were changed after this so no more works bikes could be claimed.
-
thats the one O'show,I have the 79 cycle mag with the story, very interesting, it tells of the events leading up to the day as he tried to claim another bike the week before, the mag also gets the bike off roeder & tears it down to compare with a stock Cr250r,needless to say more was different than the same!
-
Yes i have that mag too.
Interestingly the bike was tracked down and purchased by Scott Steger from Vintage Factory about 5 years ago, it had been locked in a shipping container for 25 years! He then sold it on to Terry Good and you can see pics of it now on MXworksbike.com.
Cool piece of history.

Viper79 and I (and worryingly that GMC bloke :o) attended the same high class Mensa university secondary technical school. The enormous pool of knowledge and superior mental strength stored in our brains makes even Jedi Knights noisily shat themselves in the presence of our mighty auras . 8)
if it was Viper69 would it be a Hoop Snake....
