Title: Penrith Club Charity Meeting-Magoo.
Post by: firko on March 16, 2010, 10:31:35 am
Last night I had a call from Penrith club president Mark Peatman who informed me that plans are underway to jointly dedicate this years annual charity dirt track meeting in August to Magoos family fund and Cancer research.

In a bid to attract new riders to vintage dirt track especially Bruces many mates from HEAVEN and the Evo crew, Mark indicated that for the first time post '75 classes right up to Evo and pre '85 will be included on the program. The meeting will be held over the usual two day format including Saturday night party/BBQ and camp over which has been one of the more fun aspects of the meet in previous years. Although details are still in the very early stages, Mark did hint that Saturdays legendary 20 lap pre '75 race may be joined on the program by an Evo/Pre 85 version.

The Charity meeting has grown to become one of the best dirt track meetings on the calendar and has raised a substantial amount of money for Cancer Research and other causes during its history. There's an added bonus that this years event is perfectly timed for racers to use the opportunity to sort their bikes for the Griffith Nats, a couple of weeks later.

If you've never tried dirt track before this is the perfect opportunity to discover just how much fun the sport can be. All you need is a trials tyre on the rear and you're ready to go. Lets hope that the meeting can raise as much support as we can for two extremely worthy causes.

I'll keep you all in the loop with upgraded info as it becomes available.

Being this an annual event, to get more rider support & build up to the Aust Titles each year it would be great to see it called the Annual NSW Classic Dirt Track Championships. It cannot happen this year just a thought for next year. The weekend last year was a cracker !! layed back  & fun . The Club is well organised & friendly see you there.

Sounds great to me, I've been thinking along the same lines as Grasy for a while now, that this event should have some sort of perpetual importance placed on it, but I was thinking along the lines of giving the event some sort of link to the tracks heritage.
I'm biased here but I was thinking of " The Captains Classic Dirt Bike Challenge ", or along those lines.
Billy Macdonald was heavily involved in the track pretty much from day one, both on & off the track up till the mid 70's and in my memory there weren't to many local riders who could match his presence.
I know he wasn't from Nepean but considering the complex was set up by several Sydney clubs including BWP it is a starting point.
None the less this is an exiting development and I can't wait to be involved.
C'mon who knows why he was called  " The Captain " ?

Yeah Steve , Billy Mac was a legend in the sport an probably the best known rider after Herb
As a young Short circuit upstart, I heard  him referred to as " Captain Rats ", has that anything to do with it ??

With respect...I don't think any of you blokes understand what this is all about. The original concept for Penrith Clubs Charity pre '75 meeting was developed by Brad Fisher to raise some money for cancer research in support of Mainly Maicos Les Richters wife Lisa who had been diagnosed with terminal cancer.
Lisa was the trophy girl at the first event and sadly died shortly after. In respect to her memory the meeting has now become an anual event with charity, whether it be cancer charities, Camp Quality or whatever else being the main reason for its existence. In the five or six year history of the event a serious amount of money has been raised and with the new, improved format this year that tally should grow.

I understand the respect Billy Mac has with many of the sports old timers, shit I was a fan myself, but this meeting isn't the place for 'The Captains Challenge' or as Grasy suggested, turning the meeting into 'The NSW Classic Dirt Track Championships '. To do either of those things would detract from the very reason for the meetings existence. Why does a meeting have to have "championship" tacked on the end to make it worthwhile or why should the memory of Lisa Richters and the good work that's been achieved in her name be replaced by a meeting dedicated to Billy McDonald? I've got no problem with either concept but
please, find another date to promote them and leave a good and well loved event alone.

It certainly wasn't my intention to detract from the great things achieved for various charities and friends in need or to walk over the memmory of others. Just a few suggestions that may add some history and help raise awareness and interest in a great event. Whichever direction the event evolves I'll support it.

We'll be there with bells on and I hope that as many racers who'd never normally be seen dead at a dirt track get into the spirit of what the meeting's about. Who knows, some of you may just take a liking to dirt track and want to come back for more. As well as being a good thing for the McFarland family, it's a good thing for the sport.

Who's up for a Show'n'Shine at the Nepean Magoo meeting? Maybe there are some like me that can't race at the event but would like to be a part of it in some way.
There have been bike displays in the past so let's see what we can come up with.

Wally, last week at the request of Penrith president Mark Peatman I sent a detailed letter to HEAVENs president Dan mapping out the hope that HEAVEN can get behind this event. I emphasised that not only would we be assisting the Magoo family and Cancer research charities, it's also be a great opportunity for motocross oriented HEAVEN members who've never experienced  dirt track to give it a shot. Penrith club, which in the past has been a mainly pre '75 based club have, for the first time opened up the program to include pre '85 and EVO classes in a bid to encourage HEAVEN members. This could well be the first step in healing the previous 'problems' that existed between both clubs.

I'll declare here also that I'm not a member of either Penrith or HEAVEN. I'm helping purely to assist a meeting for our old mate Magoos family and for the good of the NSW vintage movement. Our sports too small to have two clubs with similar charter working against each other. I'm hoping this will be the first step in future coordination between both clubs.

JULY 2010 NEWSLETTER

As you would all be aware, the City of Penrith Motorcycle Club always run in August a Pre 75 Charity Day. This year, because of the unfortunate loss of Bruce McFarland, the Club have decided to invite Bruce’s mates from the HEAVEN Club and run a Pre 75 and Pre 85 Dirt Track race meeting to be named the Bruce McFarland Memorial.

This race meeting will be held on 31st July and 1st August and will incorporate the usual Pre 75 25 lap race on Saturday afternoon, after which there will be a 25 lap race for Pre 85 bikes. Camping will be available at the track on Saturday night for those brave enough to camp at Nepean in the middle of winter. Don’t forget no rear knobbies are allowed at Nepean.

As usual, you can ride up one class but only within the era i.e. Pre 75 125 can ride up into Pre 75 250, but can’t ride in Pre 85. The 125’s can ride up into 250, but 250 and open bikes ride up into Unlimited. The Open class is only for bikes over 250.

Entry fee for this meeting will be $60.00 for solos and $70.00 for sidecars and remember you must be a member of either City of Penrith or HEAVEN Clubs.

Sign on will commence at 12.00p.m. on Saturday, practice will start at 1.00p.m. with the Pre 75 25 lap race at 2.30 and the Pre 85 after that. The 25 lap race will be restricted to 25 riders, so first in best dressed.

The entry form is attached to this newsletter, so please send in your entry early to allow for a program to be printed. Also, those of you needing a one event licence will need to order to make sure we have enough available.

ran into mark peatman the presso of the city of penrith club at the shops today asked him about the meeting. he was pretty excited about the weekend he has been chasing up sponsers.
on board are some local shops - deus ex machina, cash & co wreckers & kelens kawasaki. talking to mca, mick dyer mc,metropolitan wreckers & western mc.bar deus all of these shop are local to penrith area and do support the historic scene being road or track.
so how about some support from the vmx scene. i don`t know if mark has asked them about coming onboard - every little bit counts.it doesn`t have to be a heap.how about the evo/pre85 races sponsered by red devil racing. i am just put`in it out there.in saying that the reason for pre- entry is that they are going to put together a program and all sponsers will be in it.
nepean motor sport group who own the track have gave the trackhire for the weekend free to the cause.
the nsw yamaha xs650 club are having a ride day to the track on sunday
he said there is no trophies but they are working on medallions with a photo of bruce with a red ribbon. why red i asked! what colour are honda. penny dropped.pendragon solutions are helping them with the medallions, sounded every merlin to me.asked him about the link to bruce, got a lesson in history wish i never asked.well it look`s like it maybe turning into a good meet.

I'll be out to watch the 25 lappers on Saturday and'll stay to party a bit afterwards but it's too bloody cold for me, the precious old nancy boy that I am! I only live 20 minutes away so the lure of my Sealy Posturepedic and nice warm duck down dooner are much stronger than the thought of freezing my goolies off in the back of the Jeep. :-[
I'm not fit enough to ride yet but I'm bringing a few bikes out to display on Sunday.
I hope Penrith gets the support they deserve with this meeting. A couple of the Penrith guys have gone out on a limb to get this meeting running so lets hope their efforts go rewarded.

Monza being in Italy, perhaps you're supposed to run with a glass of Chianti in one hand while gesticulating madly with the other. Last year the club used the Le Mans start which I reckon is a bit easier to control than that troublesome Monza version. ::)

Oh bugger! I was waiting for the 1st comment on "Monza" Where I come from it was slang for "Mans" but who needs the detail as long as it confused Turtle. For those that haven't been to one of these it's not actually a le mans but a straddle across the front wheel facing the bike without the bike running, oh that's right yours won't kick start will it Turtle! Or is the kick starter still buried in the mud at Buladelah?

I like Firkos idea better but maybe we could balance the glass around for the 25 laps before sculling it, cant be seen drinking before we ride.

It is a pity though the Maicos takes about 200 kicks to fire ::) Now that wears me out.

Note to self, pack the electric rollers ;D Pack lots of beer :)

if you do not know already (so who is riding on the 31/1aug post ) the meeting has been cancelled and move to the weekend of the 28/29 august the last weekend in august.
the city of penrith mc are sorry for the change of date but track is under water in some parts (back chicane) this is the first available date as next weekend 7/8 there is practice then on the 14/15 heaven club is at the lakes and in september 18/19 the australian classic dirt track.
if you have entred and can not make the new date please contact christine or nev at kelens kawasaki e mail [email protected] or 47214439
could we please not start a new posting like SO WHOS RIDING ON THE THE 28/29 AUGUST because it is a lot easier to post info to the people on one posting than two rememdering that the meeting is for a great charity.

Gday guys, just wondering what the go is with the saturday 25 lap pre 85 race:
Is it open to any cc's like 400?
Is it full yet or do you have to sign up on the day and hope for the best?
Cheers Brett
Title: Re: Penrith Club Charity Meeting-Magoo.
Post by: micks on August 16, 2010, 01:27:06 pm
brett the pre 85 25 lapper was over sudscrided. going to be limited to 25 bikes but there was such a good response, the club lifted it to ? as it is a monza start ;D it was possible.that was before the postponement.it was first pre entry would get you in.the cc are ok.best to give the people at kelens a ring 47214439 that would make sure that you will get a start.

Any chance we can get an entry list posted up, fielded a lot of questions on the weekend in regards to whether riders entries have been received and if they have been entered in the 25 lappers. Some need to travel and therefore need to know. A lot of questions also in regards to scrutineering times for Saturday?
Note - I have been really careful with my punctuation you spelling nazi!

Still plenty of spot for the for the pre 85 - 25 lapp race on sat, & a few spots
for the pre 75  -  25 lapp race as well. You can still enter for this meeting
and race on the sunday, if the 25 laps race might be to much for you softies.
Dont forget it all for a good cause and our mate magoo, & his family. Even if you dont ride how about a donation the whole point of this meeting is to raise monies for the macfarland family & the selected charity.come on empty those pockets. i hear PHONCHO you got a sponserd ride at the titles?

I dropped in to Nepean to watch the 25 lappers this arvo and talk shit with a few of the fellas. The winner of the pre '75 24 lapper was the forums Peter Lee on his rapid XL and the Evo/PRE '85 was won by the quickest PE250 I've seen in a while. Unfortunately I missed the riders name. I'm going back again tomorrow and hope to get some more photos.
Here are the 25 lapper winners.

I found a new drug.
Well not so new but I haven't enjoyed its affect since, what seems like a lifetime ago.
ADRENALIN.
I managed to stay upright and even got a bit more "Competitive"????????? as the day wore on.
After spending Saturday night around the fire with the "Griffith Maffioso", I'm even more convinced that the Oz Titles in Griffith on the 18-19th of Sept will be a meeting to remember and I'm peed off I won't be there.
Anyone sitting on the fence should pull their proverbial's out and get your entry in tomorrow, I'm sure Dave will bend over to help accommodate you ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D, he is a St George supporter after all.
There I was thinking I managed to complete the 25 lapper only to be shot down by Dave when he happily  pointed out that I only did 22 laps, I got lapped 3 times. It felt like 250.
Thanks to Jim for your help in the last couple of weeks.
Steve.

P.S. The pre 75, 25 lapper was actually won by Dave Gras, Peter Lee succumed to the pressure of Olly and dropped it at the right hander, Olly then dropped a chain and Dave picked up the spoils.
To finnish first, first you've got to finnish.
Sorry Firko.

Big thanks to Penrith club and everyone who volunteered/marshalled both days.

The 25 lappers were a blast and went by to quick, was only getting warmed up by about lap 24 ::)

Good to see a few Heaven guys made the trek to Nepean.

The guy on the PE400 was #108 Chris Jones who went through the weekend unbeatable, doubt there would have been room in his van for his head on the way home ;D.

All I could manage was a lay down at the end of the straight and skinned elbows, always next time tho ;)

Special thanks to Anne and the kids for coming out for the day

Fantastic weekend, congratulations to the Penrith club for a well run event.
Only made a distance of 100M in the 25 lapper and that was only with the help of Roger helping push the flooded Maico!
Sunday was a blast and had some great racing on the Honda but couldn't catch Clarky or Brett.

Turtle, you have a nice silver cup to pick up off Noel from the 25 lapper, 2nd I believe, well done.

Good to see Ann and the kids at the event. Another congrats to the club with the medallions, now have a good memory of the big fella!

I reiterate everything Nifty, Rossco, Jim and Curley said......the Nepean Magoo meeting was a brilliant day of dirt track. The vibe, quality of racing and number of never seen before bikes could only spell a positive for the sports immediate future. Griffith will go off like ripper, you watch!

It was so good to see Anne and the kids and being able to have a chat with them. They're such a nice family and although 'ol Magoo's not with 'em any more, I think Ann's strength of character will pull 'em through. ;)
I ran off a few photos of the action and must apologise for the lack of variety. My old 'war injury' was playing up big time which pretty much limited me to staying on the speedway bend.

What a terrific roll up for the Magoo Memorial weekend , good one guys.

EA and I had a great day on Sunday, just watchin' the Skids an catching up with old friends and making some new ones , a lot of the old Dirt Track suspects were there with some stirring racing to be seen and we both found  the Trophy Presentation to be extremely moving , also the Sidecar boys tribute to Garry Anderson was very fitting , what a wonderful spirit our sport has  !!

One thing that struck me , after Firko posted the photos of Jim and Curly gettin' into it on the speedway bend, was that they were both running their older brothers race numbers from the '70s.

See ya all at Griffith

Ditto to all the above re the Nepean weekend. Great images as always Firko. Anymore where they came from. Dont hold back on us now. Same goes for anyone else whom might have some shots from the weekend.  Only managed to get out for a look for a few hours yesty and as usual the Griffith connection on there filthy four strokes where honkin as were a whole heap of others whom names allude me at this time. Everybody, including a few stand outs (they know who they are) all contributed to what was a great weekend's racing. Alway's great to see a newbie (kinda) step up to the plate and in this case it was Steve Askew (Curly 1,2 or three) on the DR500 Suzuki. Talk about a kid in a lollie shop. Did'nt get to see any finals but saw Steve place in a few heats and semi's and he was on a mission. Noel on the CZ.

Thanks Penrith Club & committee for the well organised & layed back program that I hope raised some good money for a needy cause.
The pits was a place full of happy faces & was great to meet the forum gents.

Hats of to Mark , Christine & Co to get such a large number of entries after the postponment of the original date.

See you all at Griffith or next year at the Charity Day. Can some one tell Ollie it is not on next year (that boy is great to watch from the fence or from behind).

Hey Curly what size boots do you wear as we (Griffith Maffios) are making some concrete booties for you. ;D ;D

Sorry Dave, what I meant to say was that you would bend over backwards to help any late entries.
There were definitely no homosensual undertones meant :P :P :P
I was tired.
Pete must have gotten in Carlos's ear today because he's keen to get down there.
It was good to finally catch up with you guy's.
Thanks Col, I loved every minute.
Go the Rooters.

Fantastic 2 days, last chance to enter Griffith, do it now. It is BIG. Interesting the Pre-75 classes still lead the entry list.

Another great weekend thanks to Chris, Mark, Neville and all the usual Penrith  push. Good racing, good track and lots of old & new friends. Good to put faces to a few more forum identities and chew the fat. Talking about chew the fat, Herb over fed us with some extra col sanders on sat. nite [and my leathers getting a bit tighter each year]. My slider did its "singing frog "act and would not perform for the masses. No spark after half a lap. Its got another chance at Griffith. Thanks to Ed from 'Heads Plus' for a ride on his 125 Elsinor however I couldn't do it justice, it prefers to perform for Adam Constable. Good to see a full grid of sliders in the first round. cheers pancho.

poncho leathers shrink overnight in the castlereagh climate.what you need to do is get them down to a new climate, like griffith and then they will be ok.
it`s great to hear the reply from the folk.hope all your travellers got home ok etc.
there was some personal donations as well as the money from the meeting this has to be totalled up and will get back to this thread when we have the grand total.
great photos firko love the one of ollie it looks like an american flat track shot.
now what`s next on the calendar.

Here's some more shots from the Penrith Magoo Meeting last weekend.
Below....I finally found a shot of Grasy that's good enough to put up here. It was the last action shot I took on the day so for some reason I initially overlooked it. Here he leads Jens Olsen and Mick Hockley

Thankfully there was only one major accident, this sidecar crashed right in front of me and the rider was in a fair bit of pain with a broken leg. Naturally I missed the crash shot.

It's good to see Steve Adamsons ex Tommy Thompson Redline Triumph back on the scene.

This DT1 powered home made slider has been around since the early seventies. It's recently undergone a good period resto and looks like it's straight out of a time machine. Unfortunately it wasn't listed in the program so we don't know the owner.

Brian Kelleher (650 Yamaha) and Billy Brown(Montesa 250) fight it out in pre '70

What a fantastic day out this was, I havenet set foot out at Nepean since 1983 which involved some laps on an RM465.  I even managed to catch up with an old former work-mate, Ronnie Davis, now there's a legend, the bloke has slowed a little since back in the 70's but is still SMOOTH AS SILK, still hard to get a smile out of too!  AND the bloke is still riding a TM400 he had back then!

Lots of nice old weapons getting around, bloody fantastic.

cheers,
K.t.

I've got the keyrings here. I'll be putting them on the forum as soon as I can get the bank details off Penrith club.
I'll make another attempt tomorrow.............cheers, Mark.

Update: To simplify the process I've handed the keyring deal back to Penrith club to make it easier to control the payment situation. As it was, I had no way of knowing whether a payment had gone into the account or not, making it a bit hard for me to do it from here. Stay tuned for new details on how to obtain these great little mementos of a good bloke.
