I was studying this picture and realized that it is a Montesa (going by the motor) but it seems to have no shocks on the swingarm and what looks like a shock reservoir on the down-tube. Could this be a works Monty :P

Think you'll find that its a MotoVilla(or similar) Ross
-
You're kidding? :-X Gee it looks like a Mont engine from that angle. :(. Oh well. Saves me looking for it I guess...... :D

Na keep looking - I'm usually wrong ,you know that ;)

Yeah and you also let me believe that "E.T." was real. ::)

I wouldn't be betting against you :P.
There's not much to go on but the fins look straight (and not crinkle cut).
It looks like the classic Monty kicker on the right just in front of the rider's foot.
Hmmmmmm.

Yer agreed but ... could easy be on of those early eighties brands that used components from here and there

It is Carlos Mas on the works Montesa. They made a few monoshocks and watercooled models
around 1984-85, before Honda pulled the plug. Here is a pic of the Enduro mono works bike.

Interesting - Ross's photo must be an earlier model, downtube mounted remote res.
Why do they have the front brake on the Rightside?
-
Good. I'm not going totally nuts! The ignition cover was the give-away...

I can't work that one out either!? Maybe they were trying to save on cable? ???
Very nice bike. It's a pity by that stage that they couldn't have got the counter-shaft a bit closer to the swingarm pivot but I guess by that stage not a lot of people cared anymore :-\.

this one has the brake on the left and is a disc and a bit newer again.

Very KTMish styling of that era

I think they may have been exchanging ideas if not share engineering staff. The reed valve in the Monty is marked KTM.

Not so good picture of the 1985 Works 250. Liquid cooled, mono shock.
Was raced at the San Marino GP.

The million dollar question!. I have spoken to Martin Belair about this. (Martin was a works trials rider and also worked
at the factory) He said that there was a warehouse adjacent to the factory which held works bikes, and all kinds of
works projects. He remembers seeing the aircompressor Cota's! When Honda came in, much of it got hauled to the scraper.
He also said that bikes and projects were "stolen" by Spanish workers and parts were actually removed from trucks on the way
to the smelter. When he returned to the warehouse it was completely empty! So it's hard to say how much is distributed around
Spain and Europe. No one seems to be talking..... Concerning the trials bikes. Martin said they would just take a new one off the
assembly line and add items that the rider had in his own stock. Items such as rear shocks, tyres, handlebars and other personal preference items.
The rest of the bike was stock. New Amal carbs were refitted often. (no surprise there!)
