Have the 500 JAP motor Ron Bergmier used in the Open Sidecar car event, now housed in my Hagon, actually is a 600, he liked to try and keep them guessing.

Great programs Stan, we seemed to have been around the same places at the same time and I'm wondering if our paths crossed? I rode with the Oaklieigh then Hartwell clubs from 71-80 in MX, short circuit and finally speedway. Used to muck around with Andrew Horne, Grant Cramer, Russ Bergmier, Ronnie Dindale, Steven Ireland, Ron Chasemore and others as we progressed from Sub juniors to seniors. Lived in Bentleigh until 1990.

Would be interesting to know if he won that day and who was second then as well.

I will have a look tonight at the results. Was it just the sidecars you were curios about?

A little tongue in check Stan. I raced against Russell in Toowoomba in '82, we on the Dr500 and he on the JAP and he beat us by 100 yards. Just interested to know.
I have great admiration for his talents on a sidecar but always wondered about how big the motors were.
So, short answer, just the sidecars please.
-
EML, I would have thought that Russel wouldn't have been riding the Jap in 82 unless it was in the ARAB dirt track frame. Russel first raced at Ballarto Rd Frankston in 74 when we both turned 16 and we borrowed his dad's (Ron's) junior sidecar that was running a T100 500cc Triumph motor while Ron ran the 850 norton. The Jap was kept from 72 onwards in the dirt track frame. Russel's older brother Daryl was in Europe campaigning a norton while his other brother Neil sometimes swung for his Dad if Ivor Awarty wasn't available. Russel went on to use the CCMs for Juniors and the Wessies for Seniors and I ventured into speedway solos and sidecars. When Ron took very ill in 1992 I bought out all his stuff, CCM engines, the Jap dirt tracker and the Lindsay Urquart designed centre hub steering road racer with a CB750 on which Ron broke his back at the Lavington Air base International Road Rce meeting. It is pretty easy to see the JAP is "big" as it has about a one inch steel spacer under the barrel (looks pretty agricultural) to extend the stroke, which means in the hagon the rocker cover has paper thin clearance to the rear tank mount. Both sidecar frames went to the boys who ran Beaudesert Motorcycles in 1993 when I got transferred to Mount Isa. Their partnership split and I am now unsure where they ended up. All the Bergmiers were in the earthmoving/roadbuilding game and I thought that some of their own handy work was a bit rough. When they used Frank Musset and other engine builders, that is when they really were on song. Nowing the Bergies for 40 years I know that they would push any rule in the book if the could, but with every championship they won, when the bikes were pulled down they were always legal. I would not like my previous post to be interpretted in any way. They are a rough, tough set of country boys but fair, but also never adverse to a bit of gamesmanship. Do you know of many notable sidecar boys who aren't? Russel and I raced VMX solos in Vic in 92 and 93 and keep in contact with him every now and then. If the chance comes along I'm keen to acquire a sidecar and Russel is happy to come out for a ride or 2 each year, I eckon that be great.

Yes, I reckon it was the CCM he rode at Toowoomba. And I agree that they were always fair and fast and I have no beef with that. I was just being pokey when I asked about the 'Big' engine as we were beaten at the Nats last year by a monster engine that pulled away fro mus whenever we got close enough for a pass.
How about I offer my Wasp to you guys for a ride at Broadford?? It will be on the trailer and I haven't heard from Jimmy Ellis and co. yet to see if they want it/lol
-
Thanks for your update Rosscoe , that is how I remembred it too . Now EML , if you are refering to the " monster engine" that pulled away from you. Isnt that motorracing ? That engine is 100% legal , you have placed a few jibs about that particular race on this forum before . If you have something to say about the legality about my engines , please spit it out and share it with us . Its as legal and unchanged as Emil Bollhalder won 2 worldchamion ships with it in 82 and 83 .Just so you know , it actually run with a faulty ignation that is now getting fixed for Broadford . So in fact, with a pre85 bike you chased an injured pre75 "monster" in Connendale ;D. The new frame 84 EML is nearly ready and waiting for the maiden run. So this year we should nt be in your way , having now equal maschinery . 8)

EML/WALTER
Not looking to initiate bun fights, just wanting to clarify something I wrote which could be easily misinterpreted. EML with a fused spine 3 weeks ago my racing days are finished although I'd luv to take up the offer, will have a chat with Russ and if you pm me a contact I'll get him to have a chat with you. He is an affable bloke and always up for a challenge. even a club day would be special. At some stage I wanted to put my 18 year old boy in the chair with him, just to open up his eyes, you know at that age they know everything, done everything! At least he's a fit, strong bugger. Nowadays I reckon I'd be having a picnic on the ground before we got to the first corner and my weight may tip the trike in the parking lot. Hope things go well with you blokes for the coming season as the chairs just add that special dimension into vmx and need to be fostered at all counts. Hope to catch up with you somewhere.

Rossco I dint say that to start a fight , but the bike was impounded after the race and nobody questioned the engine .The engine is a genuine GRM 998 .There are 5 of them in Australia . I just dont appreciate those sour grape jibs anymoore :(

I am the first to admit that you and Popeye are spectacular to watch however when did you get close enough for a pass EML? We are racing for a championship. What were you expecting a written invitation to pass! When you were racing with Walter did you ever put a protest in about his engines? Damien and Walter put lots of hours of work into his sidecars just like you, Popeye and Ron, We want to win just like you do. When you slag off Walter you are tarring us all with the same brush our team won the championship fair and square. And if you win our team will be the first to congratulate you and your team and any other team which wins. Quit your whinging we will see you at Broadford Good Luck. Regards Steve

Pretty certain it reverted to farmland when Ray Owen sold his farm and moved to sunny Queensland. I wonder where all those JAPs, bulty hagons are?went?
-
Stan , do you know what ever happen to that Wallan track ?
Gday Walter, no I don't know what happened to Owen Park. Wouldn't it be great if someone was to convince the current owners to run a VMX meeting there?

I wish someone could remember the address so I could try and find it on Google Earth. Jerry

Lokin' forward to Broady to see where the money went, as we have none and just love to race.
Cheers from Sunny Qld. (Tamborine had over 300mm on the week end)

Can't remember the exact rd but you exited left off the Hume at Beveridge, or you could follow Mickleham Rd all the way out and thne take a short rd into the property. Rays house sat high to the left of the entrance as you swung right down intow the creek area that ran thrpuogh the bottom of the track, it may be somewhere out near Daraweit Guim but i'd doubt weather anything could now be recognised.

Do you remember the name of the short road Roscoe?

We used to turn off the Hume into Taylors Ln Wallan, 1km, left at Rowes Ln, .5 km R/hand 90d bend, .5 km,this meets Old Sydney Rd,turn left back to Melbourne, .3km on the right I reckon is the entrance to Owen park wallan, Taylors Ln's on melways map 645, but the map runs out, you can follow the rest on Google earth, there's cleared land and a house to the left, the entrance track winds to the right around trees to where the pits and start were, No signs of any MX remains and I maybe totally wrong but its the closest i've found. :-\

KB, I Recon' your on the money with your directions\location. Had a look-see myself when I was in the area a while ago but couldn't work out where the entrance used to be or see any signs of an MX past life, if I recall correctly you could never see the track from the road?
if the drought keeps up we might be getting a look at xmas hills again!! :D

Yeah i reckon..
On a side note, Ray Owen who used to own the Wallan track lives about a kilometer from my place and has a shed full of his old bikes.
-
Ray Owen also won his fair share of Australian and state titles in his time by the way ;)
We need him to open Wallan back up :(
-
31 is Keith Stacker

Ahh, yes, with all that dust, I recognise Wallan.......
Now, where's that shitty creek crossing that was my undoing..... ??? ??? ???
