TM suzuki kickback

Hi everyone, got a issue with my trusty 1973 tm 250 Suzuki...the bastard bites!
everytime I kickstart the bike it will kick back . This is a good and bad thing, I know once it has kicked back the next kick it will start, the bad thing is that it actually can bloody hurt.
would anyone know or have a reason why this happens. Has or does his happen to other TM Suzuki riders. Cheers Nipper.

could be a few things . id start by checking out the rotor and ensuring its all correct (woodruff not worn and timing correct and tight)

 thats the easy bit.

next depends on what it happening in the big bang area.... A little kickback never hurt anyone. well unless it was from a damn big bore husky with those shark hook kick levers.

Yes its pretty normal on these old girls ....and they tend to take  out the idler gear on a regular basis.

Mine did it and snapped the kickstart knucle.
If at first you don't succeed, lower your standards.

talking generaly & not Suzuki in particular but the cdi should retard off to avoid kick back at start speed--Unless--the crank key is damaged!!. In saying that i can remember these when new & guys having cdi box issues mainly with over advancing & erratic timing [well that the theory of their blow ups], so maybe if that was true then it could do the same at kick start speed as well as full song. I'm only guessing sorry, Yamaha's never gave that trouble lol. Check the key [&--or] knock it back on the back pate timing slots--might fix it but not affect overall performance noticeably--might've been over-advanced in the first place.

have had the same thing on my YZB - including breaking the knuckle - timing was out as Lozza mentioned.

Thanks guys , the timing is set as per the book ,but this is only by lining  the stator plate with the top screw. what would be the best way to set the timing? Would setting it statically measuring BTDC be ok or do I need to use the timing light? This is a bit of black art to me.

 use the marks to get it to run. then use the light
 not sure on a Tm but my  TS are set around  4 grand so not at idle.
