As much as I love Maicos, I think these things are getting way overpriced. They're indeed great bikes but they're fast becoming Metisse like rich guy bikes. You could build one hell of an IT 465H Yamaha + a decent 250H and still have some change to take the missus out for a nice lobster dinner for that kind of money.

Silly question , what are the costs if you get someone to bid and bump up up the price ?  I mean if no outsider gets the final bid . I am new to this , anyone knows about this practice ? Is it legal ?  Tried to bid , got outbid very quick each time  ::) ::) ::)

So you're the guy with feedback of 7?  You haven't been outbid in a short time, your bids haven't been as much as the other bidder (mr zero feedback) placed on 10th November @ 16.33.

Here is the bidding list with 6 minutes to go (and looks like you are in the lead?? if you are the bidder with 7 feedback):

Yeah, I smell fish alright ::). As nice as the bike is it ain't worth 12.5k. I've had two of this very model over the years. My twin shock 82 GS490 had a reed cylinder.

Looks like Walt's the winner. Add shipping from Batemans Bay to Adelaide and it turns into a near record price for a 490, except for the crazy money Philipino Jack paid a few years ago (Who remembers that little scenario?)

Rob-start = cold start, with a typo that's been "fixed" by autocorrect. I assume.

$12k... Wow.

The good thing about telling the truth is that you don't have to remember what you said.

Great result considering the bike was far from an original looking 81 GS490. I guess if the bike presents well, there is bound to be someone out there looking to fulfill their dream of owning an 81 Maico.
Extreme motorcycles in WA had an 81 Mega 2 for $20k on Trading Post for nearly 2 years. In the end it sold for around $13,200 which is unreal.
Hope the new owner enjoys their new toy.
Let's face it some dirt bikes were never meant to be ridden.

my thoughts exactly. Well presented bike BUT all the gs stuff has been cut off. For me it's in no mans land as its not an mxer and its a chopped up gs to be made to look like an mxer. 12.5 k doesn't sit right with me either. Every body knows an mxer is worth more than a gs. One can't help but be sceptical about it.
Or mine in original trim is worth a small country....

I don't know if it's just me but it appears that the Euro bikes are really pulling good coin at the moment. Granted Euro bikes always seamed to command a better dollar but things like KX500's and other big bore Jap bikes have really died in the ar#e. I know every man and his dog is now importing bikes and the market is flooded but there has been some tasty Huskies go through Ebay of late for good $$$$.
I would be very tempted to buy the GS 490 mentioned previously on Just bikes.
Let's face it some dirt bikes were never meant to be ridden.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Other-Makes-1981-Maico-490-/140883196788?pt=US_motorcycles&hash=item20cd4afb74

Has to go for 11k for everything to equal doesn't it?
It's in the US, they go for a lot less there.

World Economy!!!! ... about $1200 for import and duty??? Maybe a bit more..........

Just as surprised as the rest of you -but as the saying goes 'it's worth what someone is willing to pay for it.' I was just fortunate that i had 2 guys that really wanted it and they just kept bidding. Winning bidder has sent deposit and we have talked over the phone so all appears good. For those who feel that the auction was a bit fishy, ??? note that I began the auction with no reserve and would of been happy to get the starting price -which I feel was very reasonable.  Anyway I have enjoyed the maico for 10 years and now it's someone else' turn, good luck to him.
