Husky CR500 82/83 any info please
« on: October 24, 2012, 09:23:17 PM »
Hey Guy's,

I'm looking at buying an 82 or 83 CR500; I've never owned a Husky before, can anyone give me a heads-up on things to look-out for on this bike, where to buy spares from and such, thanks.

Regards, John

A good choice of bike.
Nothing too concerning to worry about compared to other brands. Check the following
- Frame mount flogged oval due to swingarm pivot loose
- Cracked rims at weld join - Nordisk very bad for this
- swing arm side stand mount often ground off poorly gouging the wall thickness of arm
- check for spark. Internal rotor Motoplat is not as good as external version on XC & WR models
- Conrod's are very scarce.
- 44mm Mikuni on 82 model is best replaced with 40mm for ease of starting and riding. 83 used 40mm
- cracking of clutch cover around kickstart. Mighty kickback can do this. Recommend a decomp device installed in head as a mod.
- 82 silver streak is scarce and a beast. 83 much more user friendly!
- 83 has blue ITC Ohlins while 82 has normal Ohlins piggyback. Very good shocks.

Can't think of much else that is special to Husky's. Those models have alloy tank so the less dents the better!

Parts are reasonably easy to source.

Good luck

Good luck.

Gday John

In case you cant find conrods, have read in another Forum that Husky CR500 owners are using KX500 conrods.
Maybe someone else can verify this, as they never said which model KX. Maybe they are all the same?

Good engines, and apparently they dont vibrate as much as other aircooled big bores.

Anyway I'm jealous, I would love a Husky. Especially a CR430.

Thanks for the offer BigK, but it would be out of my price range, being unemployed.

If I had this IT490 finished, I would be happy to shift it to finance your CR. But I'm stuck with it.

BigK's is as sweet a piece of machinery as I have ever seen John. Thats if it is the same one he brings to the Viper rounds. I had a 430 and it was the nicest VMX bike I have ridden. The 430 was a 6 speed where the 500 was a 4 speed. 83 model has a different frame.

Mine's an'82 in '83 colors, CR500 NOS 4 speed trans, TC510 (4T) clutch, Mikuni flaslide, HVA factory pipe & muffler, new wheels, Works piggy back shocks, YZ465 43mm front end. Not your average CR430.

Wow it sounds great, would a 430 pull the 4 speed ok?  Would I need the extra power of the 500?  Hmmm I've got a couple to choose from, this one sounds the goods.

The bike has plenty of go, don't worry about that. HL400 has an '83 CR500 which is a good thing as well. He did want to sell it recently, might be worth contacting him.

Thanks, HL500 has an 82 CR430 6 speed for sale for $3500, it sounds like a good bike also, I had decided I wanted an 83 500 but I haven't ruled-out the 430 yet.

The 430 is a better race bike than the 500.
