how do you test a coil to see if its ok.

Use a multimeter on OHMS, most manuals will tell you the readings range you should get..

Do you have the specs for what it should read Between the high tension lead and the other input cable or cables. Dave?

OK Dave,
according to my info:
Secondary Measure between the Spark Plug lead and the earth (mount) should measure 6000 Ohms (6K Ohm
Primary Measure between the input cable and earth (mount) should measure 0.6 Ohms ie almost short circuit
