For Sale / 1978 IT250E forks and triples
« on: January 05, 2015, 10:45:42 PM »
Bought these to use the triples in my TT500 (same) but got another set with some clean forks from the US. Triples are good would need a paint up for resto purposes. Forks have rust on the chrome between the clamps, none on the moving parts. Lowers have surface corrosion/anodize breakdown but no major scrapes or gouges.
Triples $30
Forks $40

I use plastic paint stripper in an aerosol can. Get it from a automotive paint supplier. It's designed to remove non oem paint from plastic without deforming or damaging the plastic.

I rode a 98 RMX when it was close to new, was nothing like the explanation this dude's giving. He either has something special or a black belt in bullshiting.

Tech Talk / Re: Two pack or powder coat?
« on: October 05, 2014, 02:52:52 PM »
If you slice back the frame yourself, i dont believe it has to be all back to bear metal. I personally would not use a primer, rather a etch additive or an etching paint as most of the frames were painted with colour straight onto the frame so when the boot marks show you do not see a line of white primer.

Did my RM and KX frames this way. The KX had different layers of paint on it so coarse scotchbrite and thinners got it back to the original paint. Quick haze coat of etch primer, colour 10 mins after. All done in the back yard hanging from my 'Hills hoist spray both'. Don't tell the neighbours ;)

I powdercoat my roadbike frames as it's a lot more durable in that arena and is a lot cheaper than paint (due to prep time, ally). I powdercoated my TT frame on advice from mates (it was the mid 90's and apparently everyone was doing it) years back. I was told it doesn't rub off like paint around the boot zone, well that turned out to be an urban myth 2 rides later. I use 2 pack on the dirt bikes now as you can touch it up as was said previously. With the powdercoat on the threads, most good powdercoaters will have heat resistant silicone bungs to cork the holes to save the potentially painful task of cleaning threads.

Does anyone know, did the 82 XR500 come with a light switch block for hi/lo off/on in Australia?

Did you get this sorted? Like Pancho said check to see if the keyway has sheared on the flywheel. I had a similar problem to this on an IT490 caused by a sheared key. If it doesn't rev that can be from a faulty pick up coil.

If it's not OEM paint. Plastic paint stripper like Grunter215 and bazza said. Comes in an aerosol can and is designed for plastic, works great.

Boy you were over dressed-must be those greeny/PC auzies influencing you

Yep been here a while and it has rubbed off on me. It's good to 'break free' now and again. I've got a cop as a neighbour now so breaking free has to be performed a bit more low key now.

Yeah "the lawless North". I went 'retro' when I was there last Easter and rode up to my cuzi's place 6km away on the TT. No helmet, reg or WOF. Strictly shorts and jandals.
Jandals are they Kiwi Japanese saftey riding boots ;)
Also used in the Pacific Islands and parts of Queensland too.

It's home. Back in the day it was a tough little town and taught me some lessons in life, fairly dead now. Learn't all my riding there in the forestry 5 kms out of town. Had to get used to towing the bike on the trailer here in OZ. There, straight on the road at 13 on my 81 YZ125...few cop chases too.

Opononi....I'm from down the road a bit in Moerewa. That's where my TT500 is at my parents place. I like my 2 strokers too, had a IT490 for years. Seen it on ebay before Xmas last year for sale (disc front and rear) and just about bought it back. I took revenge and bought the WR500 while I was working in Perth a few years back. The XR500's I've always wanted one.
