yz125x forks, what to do..

this is annoying me.. hopefully you guys will have a better idea.

these forks off dad's 76 125 x are in pretty good condition, except this one chip.
Its on the 'fork slider'

Cant buy NOS/aftermarket ones, cant find anyone with a set i can get one from.
It doesnt seem to affect anything, the circlip, washer oil, oil seal etc dont leak. But its still a weak spot and will probably keep cracking.
Not to mention how ugly it is.

These forks were on the yz400c,yz250c,yz175c and yz125x.
Should i look at getting some machined?
In the meantime i will keep searching for some forks to molest to get a replacement.. but maybe someone has an answer for me.

It looks like cosmetic damage only to me, probably caused by dropping on to the exposed edge, or levering the seald out with a screw driver . I don't think it would be a structural weakness.

If there any leaking or chance of leaking I would patch with epoxy.

The OEM fork gaiter will cover any cosmetic issues.

I would then run it as is and keep my eyes open for a replacement at the 'right money' when the opportunity arises. I sold a pair of X forks for about $100 about 6 months ago.

yeah i think your right, looks like someone did it getting the seal out. ive made up a tool for removing it now so it wont happen again.

will run it for now and keep a look out.. !

If you're really worried about leakage or the seal etc moving you could always use some knead-it or similar to build the area up next time you've got them apart. Sets up hard enough to be filed etc, favourite with trailriders for patching cracked cases etc in the middle of nowhere

would liquid metal work there I think it would I have used liquid metal and the putty gear on cases before with no dramas

Should work but the putty is easier to work with as you can mould it to shape in place then leave it to harden unlike liquid metal, think when everything is apart & clean you'd be looking at less than 5 minutes to do it & then come back later to tidy/shape

oh yeah probably better to use putty for that reason it goes off like rock that stuff i have it on one case at the moment have never seen a drop of oil thanks Michael.

Quick Steel putty is what you want which you can file smooth afterwards or you could probably get it TIG welded too.

this is how good the liquid steel stuff is.
i had some pitting in a fork tube around where the seal is and just above.cleaned out all the holes and used metho as last wipe.mixed up liquid steel and applied to fork tubes.let sit for 24hours.returnd fork tube to 35mm and rebuild fork.no leaks what so ever.the only thing i did wrong is used a product that dries black.
for the alloy i would use devcon alloy putty it set strong enough to drill and tap.we use it all the time at work.years ago i filled a lot of corrosion spots on the bottom of a alloy boat i had with devcon.never leaked a drop.

125X forks are 36mm, same as 250 and 400C.

If you get really desperate, I have a spare pair of X lowers -sounds like ty or Basil will be able to sort you out though.

The 125X lower fork leg had a rib running down the front and back where the 250/400 didnt, cheers John.
