Sorry to disappoint you Hoony, but I know the story with this bike and it's a done deal. The owner was not expecting that sort of money for it. I guess if someone has the money and they want something bad enough they'll pay the cash. Unfortunately you won't see it on a track anytime soon, It's becoming a trophy in a bar.

99% of the time if you said "bullshit", you would be right. Good on the owner for getting those dollars even though it still probably owes him more than that if he did the resto.

Absolutely 090, if I didn't know what the story was legit I wouldn't believe it myself.

well i stand corrected then! great price for him (the seller).

and yes you are correct if someone wants one bad enough (and yes it would cost more that $6k to build a mint one)

maybe i should unload one of my 2 then.

Is it way too small? A bit of work with the heat gun or hot water could soften it enough to fit if it's close. Maybe some rubber friendly grease as well.

The 84 and 85 cr's were pretty much stand alone bikes in the engine department. 86 went to HPP and the 84/5 bikes each had there own ATAC setup. The waterpump/ATAC governer is exclusive to each model. Parts from 86 and 87 will fit eachother. In saying that, there was a 85 CR500 on the bay recently that had what looked to be a 89 or later clutchcover/waterpump on it.
Wheels, forks etc will fit. Shock wont fit 84. Tank/seat different. Even footpegs are different. There are a few bits from the 86/87 that work on the 84. You will see for yourself when/if  you have them side by side.
Hope it helps

Thanks Mark,
I should have stated my reasons for inquiry in the first place. I am wondering if the 85CR rear wheel is a 18” and the same as the 84CR rear wheel. That would make it legal to run in the back of my PRE85 1984 XR500, so I could run a 18” trials tyre for dirt track. The other thing is I notice from looking at pictures that the alloy swinging arm on the 85CR model looks the same as the 84CR. If it is the same part number, it also would be legal to run in PRE85. The CR arm looks about 40mm longer than the XR swinging arm. I have an article for the XR. It is about how Geoff Ballard reworked it in to a better bike. It says he lengthened the swinging arm by 38mm. I am wondering if that is the easy way to do it? and get rid of the 84XR “steel” arm, at the same time. I could have bought that basket case CR, five weeks ago for $150. I will enquire this weekend wether it is still available.
Grateful for any help, guidance or knowledge.
 Thanks Mick.

Just the demand is low, I guess. Take a look at this '85 that's near mint condition. He's been trying to sell it for months. He'll be lucky if he gets $1,000US for it.

Great looking bike. Its when bikes go so cheap you wish you lived in the states. Is he selling his bike or himself? There are a lot of pics of him with the bike in the background ! :D

Hi Brad, do you have any 1984 CR's ? do they have an 18" rear wheel as opposed to the 17" that I cannot find a trials tyre for on the back of my XR500's ?
thanks Mick.
