Thanks Jim that is good to know I am not sure as I am not in hurry it doesnt matter if I don't have one straight away I have a project rm400c I have got 1 bike interstate from Queensland and to my door it was a bit less than $300. I always thought I would find one in Australia but I am not sure how many came here and where they are all hiding I have even tried wreckers they have all ts but no tm's. Maybe no one wants to part with tm400's which is strange considering a bad rep who knows thanks alot Michael. :)

I believe if you wait, watch and have patience it will come to you. There will be a TM400 oneday 8)
Its a lot to get involved in OS trading for a young fellow who may get burnt or have small finance...nothing personal frosty but you need good local support for the deal to be successful.
cheers yours in looking for a TM400

Dont worry Alison I understad what you are saying I am sort of leaning towards US way but I am not in a hurry I wanted to race pre75 but not till late next year do I get my licence and I would even have a chance to getting to an event. I still have 4 400's to ride if I have a real go I can get my rm400c together aswell and I am not going to just buy a tm becuase it is there in the US there seems to be quite a few about so wether I get one now or not for a year or two isn't a problem thanks alot Michael. :)

Michael, my 2 cents worth..like vintage bikes the 2 cent was phased out years ago..so it's worth even less than tuppence but if you are going to the trouble of buying a TM400 from the US try and get an original orange tanked '71 TM400R 8) In my eyes this is/will be the most collectable model but ironically it's also the model that broke frames and killed people so the legend goes. Whether or not you believe in legends is entirely up to yourself but I feel they were just a little misunderstood..like me :D

Sorry to gang up Alison but buying a bike overseas is just as easy as getting one here and to be honest, most of the Americans I've dealt with over 20 years are a lot more honest than many of the Aussie sellers I've encountered. I think most who've dealt with American sellers will agree with me on that.
There are enough of us "uncles" on here to help him out and organise his shipping and storage if that's the direction he chooses to go.
My advise to Michael is to buy as original a bike as possible, try and avoid restored bikes as they're usually overpriced and can often be glossed up to look much better than they actually are. An unrestored bike allows Michael the pleasure of doing the bike up himself and will certainly be a hell of a lot cheaper to buy. I agree with Doc on model choice as well. I'd be looking for an early orange tanker as they're the reputation maker. Sure they were ordinary when compared to other bikes of the era but they can be made into good honest race bikes with little effort. Once again, the "uncles" here can help in that regard. Plus there is the cool factor. The TM400s evil reputation has given it a certain cool factor that can't be matched by the safe, bland opposition. It's kinda like why chicks are attracted to bad boys.

Yeah on your first ride on one of these, make sure you got someone with a video camera and make sure you got a crowd :)

I reckon get one while you can, they are not just gonna keep poping up for sale every so often. Ive made that mistake before thinking another one will turn up when i didnt bid on something on ebay.

Thanks guys I will be looking but I really must get my other projects out the way first like the gt80 it is a lot different to a tm400 but it is still a nice bike to look at but I doubt I will ride it only on clean surfaces. I must admit the 71 tm400 is the one that appeals to me most I think that is the best looking model even though they all looked good the orange one is different in a good way. If I go to get one from the US I will definetly be asking for help from a few guru's on here thanks alot Michael. :)
