Raced in 2000 & 2001, been involved in supporting with a 9th, 7th, 5th and 2nd but not a 1st. This is our year!
If there is one thing that you should add to your bucket list is the Finke Race, it's awesome.

Randall is a legend. I raced the year that he rode a Honda 400 4 wheeler. Didn't set any records or class wins but rode down and back and did it tough. A lot of watery eye's at the finish line when he crossed it. LEGEND

Just by chance i recently ended up with Randall Gregory's '94 Finke race winning CR500. It was still set up for the Finke complete with sponsors stickers, tall gearing etc but in very rough condition.
I have restored it and set it up with standard gearing and jetting and have only had a short ride on it and the thing is an absolute weapon!

I recall that that bike had some serious engine work John. How does it compare to a stocker?
On the subject of fast CR500s, a mate of mine has the rocket fast CR500 that Shawn Giles raced early in his career in road racing and dirt track. Anyone who ever saw Shawn on that beasty at Amaroo Park or remembers his unbelievable battle with Eddie Warren on an equally trick KX500 at the Bathurst Long Track a few years ago will know just how quick that bike is. A magazine article at the time quoted Tony Hatton, the builder saying that it had 90-95 bhp which may be a little generous, but it definitely has some neddies. The engine, in an RS250 roller missed making the grid in the '95 Australian 500 GP at Eastern Creek by a mere smidgy of a second ahead of a number of fair dinkum GP bikes.

Next year hey !
Alot happening in the bike world on 12 & 13th June, some Aussies off to the  Isle of Man and a few headed to Finke..anyone heard how many sidecars have entered Finke. ?

quote Toby Price“I’ve been up in Finke for over a week testing, so I’m used to high speed and going in straight lines.
“Coming back into the tight and windy conditions, I felt a little slow, but obviously my times were fairly good.
cheers

1st 80 kays your on the stopper on the main road than it follow's the old ghan train track, the sand is finer there than what im used to in the simpson desert and the finke river crossing is supper fine and you need alot of hp to cross that,a good ride but i found they didnt mark bad washout"s and other hazzet"s like telepole guide wires that could cause realy bad getoff"s,the one"s that put people in wheel chairs but that was in 84 so things could have improved since then

Hey Matt, are they back using the main road again???

From memory, they stopped using the main road in the 80's and the last time I was there in '05 they hadn't gone back to it.

That would be very interesting if they started using it again.  ;D

As a side note, my wife has suggested that I give it another go next year...............  :-\ Maybe it's something to do with it being 25 years since I did it last, or maybe it's just cos my insurance policy is worth a bit.................  ::)
