Whats it worth
« on: April 29, 2009, 10:41:12 pm »

What is a realistic $ value for a NOS RM465Z (thats 82)Cylinder.
What price does it become not worth it?????

A KX500 cylinder went for US$325.00 the other day and there is a YZ250H cylinder on evilbay for US$500.00 on at the moment.

A good investment or not?

If I had a bike that I really loved,  then USD$500.00 would top out my stress levels.  But if you need it,  you need it.
I have paid less than USD$220.00 for a YZ 490L barrel,  but it was on last bore.
Considering the barrel is an essential part of the engine,  then $500.00 is a mark,  like half a grand.  The value is more in the fact that you can find and secure one!!.  Go for it.  You will be upset if you dont...

If a barrel is worn past the typical 2.00 mm oversize, there is no other avalible, and;
- There are no damaged fins
- Fred Bloggs Motorcycling hasn't attacked the ports and turned it into light switch
- There are no stripped threads
- If water cooled, not corroded out
then a NOS barrel is worth the cost of;
Sleeve + labor to fit + Hydroblast + painting/refinishing
(Note: If a sleeve is avalaible)

For the same price could get an old barrel, fins repaired etc, old iron liner taken out a new aluminium Nicasil liner machined and plated to the piston size of your choice. No more rebores, a big seizure has the liner out, replated then refitted and added performance as well.
