Stolen Bikes SMS messaging?
« on: February 27, 2009, 10:42:16 am »

This appidemic of stolen bikes really shits me.
Low lifes who take advantage of someone elses hard work & money.
The Police can barely keep onto top of big crime let alone theft.
I am not blaming them, they are underesouced and have to prioritise but usually only come across stolen bikes by accident.

This is why I am proposing something that may help
I have access to free mass text messaging.
If there are interested people I could do a state by state register that also could be used nation wide alert if need be.
I dont need names, I wont send advertising, sell to third parties, annoy you with anything else but theft alerts.
This has been successfull in the recovery of 2 bikes in the Ballarat area.
Please dont hit me with privacy crap or anything negative.
If you dont thinks it's a good idea then simply dont register.
I will guage peoples response by the number of post for it.
I am only after ideas how we could make this work. If no one wants it so be it.
If sufficient numbers are interest then perhaps people wishing to register could give the aministrator permission to send me a list.

Ideas???????????

The other problem that I have found with the theft of a VMX bike is that it can't be reged so motor insurance companies don't want to know about it, and house and contents will not cover them because they are a vechicle. So it is chatch 22.

Iam about to bolt all my bikes to the floor of the shed, with 2 chains and 2 eye bolts as all you would know the amount of work that goes into these bikes is amazing.

If I caught someone stealing anyones special car or bike or boat I would cut sick at them and they wouldn't come back. One word "SCUM"

How do you guys cover your bikes insurance wise?? also is it possiable to put on one of those tracking things as I have heard this all the rage in america, it is like a minture chip you put in a whole or hide it somewhere and they bike can be tracked??

What do all you guys do to minimise the risk??

Cheers
Tom

I had a piece of shit pass me a counterfiet bank cheque for a YZF250 a few years back,. he had a fake identity , fake licence and his fake name embroided on his work shirt, fooled me and done me for $7500,

So then I sent a text message to every advertised trail bike in the sydney trading post saying if a "Nathan" offers to buy your bike and turn up with a bank cheque already made up in your name, you are probably going to be ripped off, to cut a long story short he got caught the very next bike he tried to steal,...so I beleive your idea is a winner.

Shannons will cover VMX bikes, all they need is a couple of pics of the bike, engine and frame numbers plus the usual detail like where it's stored etc.
Cover for my RM costs me $65 / year in premiums and that's for an agreed value of $4,000 for theft and some damage while being transported to and from events.

Hello Gentlemen,

Just rang up shannons for a quote, they will only insure an unreged bike if you have a bike lic. for more than 2years. This seems odd to me as you do not need a lic. to ride them??

Any other companies people use??

Cheers
