Forum does not work properly for Me?
« on: February 07, 2009, 03:08:06 pm »
ok, i bought a new PC a month or so ago, installed all the sofware blah blah. and set it up like my old one BUT

i have it set so i never have to log in (site remembers me) but if i have not been on the site in a few hours (or days/months) when i go back into site the "show unread posts since last visit" link does not find any, when in actuall fact there is heaps of posts.

if i have recently checked the site about 30min or an hour or 2 ago it works. this never happened on my old machine.

what do i have to change? its a little thing but it pisses me off big time.

I go to TOOLS and in the drop down bar I find the data or history storage area and I delete all the cookies and history etc.As some website change there settings a fair bit.
Don't be logged into any website when you do this deleting session.
I find this helps on our Windows XP.
good luck.

i heard a rumour that microsoft are going to release a new version of XP as Vista is getting a bad rap.

i bought a dell machine with what they calla Vista Downgrade. it comes with XP installed and the upgrade disc's for Vista. you can still do this with a new machine although it is not marketed.

maybe this could be your answer Leith. i hate installing and fiddling with software, so that was why i chose XP again as i had no problems with my old machine, better the devil you know thing.

Het Hoonmeister, I bought a new iMac just before Christmas and even though I was sceptical, the thing is absolutely unbelievable. No Windows for me ever again i'd reckon.

not really sure Leith. mine came with XP pre installed and the Upgrade disc's for Vista. not sure how to go about it the other way, maybe Pokey can answer this one. if you don't have lots of application software installed it maybe better to reformat hard disk and start out fresh.

does everything you want run on the IMac Magoo? i have heard a few people go this way and i was very sceptical too so i bought the dell.

i think if you and others have a trouble free experience then that will be the way i go next time.

They tell me you can't get viruses on a Mac, and since I bought this thing it amazes me every day with the things it can do. Only problem is that Windows based programs won't work and You actually have to pay for (or borrow) programs you need because it's hard to get pirated copies. Awesome so far. It was said to me by a few people that once you try one you'll never go back. Bit like a Honda I guess. i'm totally sold.

Hoony,

Sounds like a problem with your web browser NOT your computer itself.
What browser are you using?

I too am a Mac man but that goes back a good 14 years.
I am a designer (graphic) and I have NEVER had a virus on any of my Macs.

This machine that I am using at present is approaching 4 1/2 years in age.
It was the 'dogs gonads' (as those strange British gents say) when I bought it.
It will need replacing in the next 6 months but I have NEVER had 1 problem with
it in 4 1/2 years. Not one virus - nothing.

I will be buying another Mac - rock solid.

My only advice would be to use 'Firefox' as your browser and empty your stored
cookies and cached data regularly. I switched to 'Firefox' a few years ago and I
have never looked back.

Nothing but problems with Microsoft Internet Explorer and as it is the predominant
Global web browsing software a lot of the viruses out there are designed to target
the IE application.

Jock
