xl 185 plastic tank
« on: September 17, 2007, 10:22:35 pm »
just accquired an 81 xl185s,i want to strip it of all the road gear and put a plastic tank on it.i'm thinking an early xr200 tank might fit straight on.does anyone know if this is possible or have a suggestion on another tank.i was hoping to get a red tank but if something fitted straight on i'd be happy.

clarke mfg should have something for your bike - http://www.clarkemfg.com/cgi-bin/miva?Merchant2/merchant.mv

possibly this one http://www.clarkemfg.com/cgi-bin/miva?Merchant2/merchant.mv+Screen=PROD&Store_Code=CM&Product_Code=1365&Category_Code=honda+xr%2Fxl

or one of their universal ones here - http://www.clarkemfg.com/cgi-bin/miva?Merchant2/merchant.mv+Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=CM&Category_Code=universal

have a good look around on their website and email them and they should be able to suggest the right one to get.

with the good exchange rate at the moment now is the time to get one.

also you may be able to get the tank you want off ebay a little cheaper. ebay store motorcycle accessories direct? sells them a bit cheaper than clarke.

good luck

I just tried an XR200 tank on a 98 XL185 frame and I think that if you cut off the two tubes that hold the original tank mounting rubbers (up near the headstock) it would fit.You would have to make new mounts for the XR tank.
I have a couple of these tanks ,so if you want one ,let me know. There is also an XR350 tank if I can find it.

roger, the picture didn't come through.the one i have is off the first model 250,no cap but the later caps fit it,also no tap.apart from the dent i think this tank is in very good condition for its age, paint is good and i think the dent will pop out easily, can't guarantee it holds fuel as i haven't had any in it.if you want it for personal use you can have it.
