I must confess I had some inside help. When I didn't get it on my first attempt, of which I was sure it was a young Craig Gillies, I rang Craig to run it past him. He gave me a few names but when one of the clues was this man rode a KT as well, that sealed it.
Craig doesn't read this forum, in fact he doesn't even have a computer or internet access, but he still likes bikes and has quite a collection of twinshock trials and enduro bikes, some going some not. He keeps saying that he'll ride a Qld or OZ twinshock title event again oneday, but who knows when.
Keep your eyes open at CD6 as he said he may take a couple of bikes along.
Craig Gillies could win a twinshock title riding a wheelbarrow. In 1995 I watched him win the Classic class at the Aussie titles on his Dad's converted 1960 CZ 125cc road bike (Craig's dad Gordon also was a trials nut). It had virtually no compression, and the forks had so much wear in the sliders that the front wheel could move an inch forward and back and neither brake functioned. I also think it was a rigid frame.
Next time I saw him ride was a few years later when he won twinshock class on an otherwise stock TY175 with the shockies straight off a TS185ER (ie so stiff they might as well have been solid rods). Next time it was Craig winning something (a greybeards title I think) on a hotted-up 1985 TY350 complete with expansion chamber - against the modern bikes. I think it was an ex-Shane Mitchell bike. Craig is a legend all right and he started young, becoming Aussie Junior champ in 1976 at 16 by riding the Saturday event (for Juniors), and then doing very well against the grownups the next day in the Open class. I don't remember what position he got but someone probably will.
