« on: January 02, 2009, 07:57:46 am »
Just thought I'd put this in because this page appears to be becoming a Montesa's only page.........just kiddin' !!!!   Went for a trip out to Anthony Suttors place (VINTAGE DIRT )on Sunday to pick up a Bultaco SD Matador rolling chassis. Absolutely incredible scenery on the way out there, had a yarn with him for hours on Bully's , racing ,the dickheads you have to deal with(and the good blokes), cars and shit in general.Had a ball !!Anywhooooo,so heres the latest toy.............

Nice buy. I've been looking for something like that for a while. There was a couple of Matadors on the US eBay site, ex-Hugh Bultaco jobbies that had seen better days but, of course, stupid $A/$US rate and the vagaries of shipping and the tyranny of distance make it a headache.
I thought about a MkVII Pursang frame and a Frontera/detuned Pursang engine and then thought about a Frontera and then the wife wanted the garden redone and it all became too hard (the bike thing, though the garden was a complete bitch as well!)
I'm going to have to give up US eBay because seeing the bits and pieces for an SD5 or MkIII Mattie makes my mind drift.
What's the goal with your SD? Engine? Competition?
Go on, get me interested again. It'll give me something to think about while I'm pulling out lawn ...

At this point Felix,I just want to give her a decent coat of paint and some TLC (and some new guards)so I can ride her around with a bit of class,I have enough bikes to race at the moment,so she'll probably get a resto after a while.
Its a Matador motor but its been ported for dirt track (it screams)seats been ordered from VINTAGE DIRT,a silk shift drum from Peter Schoene , some magura controls and a proper headlight.
I had one when I was a nipper,so I just want to ride and enjoy this one.

Jeez Roger, how did you do it? You've managed to get a bike out of Anthonys Bultaco stash, breaking a previously inpenetrable barrier. His love affair with the vintage movement must truly be over. If the "media" and the rest of us weren't so biased against Bultacos maybe he'd still be talking to us. It's a shame really, I like Anthony and enjoyed having him and Jennie around the sport. I did get a Christmas card from them so all may not be lost. ;) Hopefully he may now consider selling me one of his M11s or Banditos.

Ross, it would probably have been a MK11. Very sweet handling bike in my book, but power was a little down on the opposition by then.

Mark, last time I talked to Anthony about 6mths ago he was somewhat disillusioned w the vintage movement. You may well get a bike from him.

Anthonys disillusionment with the vintage movement was pretty much self induced. He threw himself so much into it with his Vintage Dirt business and collecting the worlds biggest Bultaco stash that he came to forget the simple pleasures the sport brings. He started to find "Bultaco haters" behind every bush, accused VMX magazine of being anti Bultaco and pulled his advertising and generally took it all way to seriously. It's fine to be dedicated to the one make that gives you enjoyment but to turn that love into a blind obsession is not healthy. I regard myself as a friend of Anthonys and have been to his lovely sheep property a number of times but I'm stumped if I can work out what triggered the current attitude. As much as I've tried, I 've failed to notice any serious bias towards any make of bike in either the media or among the vintage community. Sure Bully owners cop a fair bit of tongue in cheek ribbing (Sherpa and Grant, Coco Fluffies and eLPresidente et al) but none of it has ever been seen as fair dinkum by the general Bultaco community, with the exception of that humourless tosser, President Ceglinski and it seems, Anthony. I'd like to see Anthony get over whatever it is that bothers him and he and Jennie return to the fold even if just for the Classic Dirt type events. His knowledge and unique outlook are sorely missed.

Roger,

In my view Bultaco had many very good & very nice looking models & the Mk5 SD is one of them (on both counts). Looked much nicer than the ponderous looking Mk4.

Nice to re-live what you had as a nipper too. Enjoy!

PS I may be able to help w some parts if you need them (eg tank). Don't hesitate to ask, I owe you a favour or two.
