XL250 Exhaust identification
« on: March 04, 2018, 10:28:58 am »
Does anyone here know what brand this exhaust is? It's brand new and for a 72 sideport port model. Pipe is for left  side. Holes in mesh are about 4-5mm dia. I don't know much about aftermarket 4t pipes. From looking at 2T pipes J&R used this type of mesh with small holes and Bassanis were 9 or 10mm. I was told this could be Bassani as the seller said it was with a heap of other NOS Bassani pipes but this type of mesh makes me think its not a Bsssani but i am still guessing. maybe the baffle is a good ID point?

Actually they are showing now. I think you need to give them time to load? I have not changed anything. Might be Onedrive playing up? Let me know.

It's not a Hooker, They had the traditional Heart on the silver heat shield like all the 2 t pipes they did and the end was reverse cone , not shrouded as the pic.

Going by the muffler shape and the shape of the baffle / exhaust outlet I would say that it is a J & R exhaust. I had a J & R on my SR500 Yamaha back in the early 1980's and the muffler and baffle looked pretty much the same as the one in your pictures.
Why do things the easy way, when with a bit of effort you can really make it difficult for yourself!!

Thanks for that. There were always lots of J&R ads in Trail & Track  and ADB magazines in the 70's so they would have been widely available here.

Also thanks CF for the message. Your suggestion that it could be an Eltham Dirt Company (EDC) exhaust made in Melbourne is an interesting one. I have never heard of that brand or company.

I bought this from Ross at Tiaro. This was the last muffler he had but he said he still has quite a number of the NOS header pipes still.

The Eltham guys were biiiig into fixing up DT 250 yammies...they tried real hard.... they had fork mods, brake mods and pipes and port jobs and shockers and special swing arms..... most guys bought a husky or a John Burrows Ossa and rode faster.

I have something very similar - can't recall the make but bought it for my 79 XL500 years ago. Still have it but use a Peter Allen on the bike.
