Reminiscing from the 80's............
« on: August 15, 2017, 12:45:01 am »
Gday, I have been on the silent sidelines of this great forum for quite a long time now and thought I would finally put pen to paper (in keyboard form!) and share with whoever wants to listen to my personal dribble on what I think is great about the old moto-x scene in general.

I am 51, so I grew up (in Lower Plenty, Vic.) with having been lucky enough to own a YZ80D as my first bike when I was 13 (secondhand). Got a YZ80E next (secondhand again), then got as a surprise 15th birthday present a YZ80H! To this day it was the ducks nuts!! (I have a fully restored one sitting on a custom made stand in my mancave, thanks to Brett Sawyer's immaculate resto skills………)
My older brother and sister all rode bikes, I remember going to Peter Stevens Yamaha with my brother one day and he bought one of Mike Landman’s YZ400E/F year old bikes. It was brutally quick back in its day.
I played a lot of squash at the Lower Plenty Squash Centre as a young teenager and I became good friends with a very nice lady behind the service counter, Bev Rhodes. She was telling me how good her son Robin was on a bike and this is how I became to be a big fan of Robin Rhodes. He was sponsored by Grimshaw Suzuki and he was always knocking on the factory door’s race teams to get a ride but just never quite got there. I used to go a lot of the races in Victoria and interstate with Robin and his mum and dad over the next 3-4 years and loved the whole atmosphere and vibe of the mid 80-s MotoX scene. This was when Gally was still the man to beat with Leisky his apprentice fastly advancing and Ray Goof Vandenberg and co. snapping at their heels. Robin finished a best of 7th overall one year in Mister MotoX and I was one of his biggest fans. (Even though I was a YZ man!) I could tell many a story about all the goings on back then but I know a lot of you guys from that era would also have a heap of good memories from then too.
I bought a few new bikes all from K&J Thomas in Whittlesea over the years until I moved up to Darwin. I got to know Trevor Thomas a little bit (through going to the race rounds) and at one stage he was a factory Honda rider, but I don’t think he quite got to the same levels as Leisky and co. but he was bloody quick, and a nice bloke too. 99% of the racers back then were top blokes and very approachable. The bikes were trick as too! How I’d love to get hold of an 82-83 RM465 now and add it to my collection in recognition of Robin Rhodes talented riding and demeanour from a golden era.
Even though I have always been a YZ man, my favourite race bike was my 93 CR250 Honda! I raced a 92,93 and 94 CR250 whilst I lived in Darwin, mainly in enduro’s. I was a pretty average rider but these bikes made me go and look a little faster!! I have a fully restored 93 sitting in my man cave………..
I got out of the whole MX scene when I moved down to Perth from Darwin in mid-94. However I felt naked without a bike when I first moved here and ended up buying a brand new 97 KTM 250EXC a couple of years later. I rode it literally once round the block and parked it up in my lounge room for 18 months as a piece of furniture, before selling it for a bit more than what I paid for it!
With work commitments (and fast cars!) taking up my time, I have been out of the scene up till about 4 years ago where I built myself a mancave and decided that it needed some mementoes of my life up to now. I have a heap of Ford memorabilia and a few old motorbike trophies etc. lying around, so I decided to obtain bikes I have previously owned or have a vested interest in. As of this day I currently have in the mancave a YZ80H, YZ80D, YZ80K, YZ125J, YZ465G, Honda CR250 ’93 and an XL75 (77 Model). I also have an 85 VMax (full powerboost model) with a genuine 5100 miles on it from new. Cheers for now, Colin

im still living in the 80's...(apparently 8)) nice bikes in the collection, i had forgotten about Robin, i remember thinking he should have made the grade as well but bad luck and circumstances always seem to keep him out of the top 5.

Great summary of your life in dirt bikes Colin, thanks. Always interesting to read about others' experiences.  Great to hear you didn't hold back when you finally got back into it, good range of bikes there, plenty to keep you gainfully occupied with.  And that vmax......icing on the cake mate!!

It's interesting when you reminisce about days of past and all those things that happened and you then took for granted back then, all of a sudden seem alot more important to hold onto as you get older.......

It's important to acknowledge the past and if you can in some way like i have, preserve some of it as a constant reminder of what you had then and be able to hold onto great memories for now and into the future.

I am planning to make the big trip across for the second VMX get together in NSW next year and bring a couple of bikes along. Really hope to even meet one or two of my past MX hereos from back in the 80's too if possible. Just gotta sneak the credit card with me without the missus knowing........!!

Ahhh, the 80's. This was my era too Colin, I wasted all of my formative high school years chasing thrills on MX bikes. If it didn't have anything to do with V8's or off road 2 strokes It just couldn't compete. If I had my time over, I wouldn't change a thing either.

It is a familiar tale, first bike is an out dated junker from the 70's but once you feel the thrill of two wheels and an engine, you just want bigger better and more! I became quite adept at making out dated models perform better because I was never in a position to buy a current model. So my mechanical skills were always being honed if I wanted to keep up and that was half the fun, tinkering through the week and putting the machine to the test on weekends.

Like you, I have a preference for Yamahas as that seemed to be what I owned mostly although my first bike was a TS90 Suzuki. I still have a soft spot for Suzuki's, even still have a few. I have owned a few Kwakas and have a YZ or two now.

The 80's certainly were radical leaps in technology from the 70's and the works bikes on show throughout the 80's were simply mind blowing in terms of innovation and craftsmanship.
I am building a YZ80E at the moment which I am hoping will look like a mini 0W27.

Welcome, and thanks for the intro.

Cheers Rocketfrog, the 80's in general were very special to be a part of especially when you were still young enough to do crazy stuff and get away with it, (but still old enough to know better!) unlike today with social media and CCTV just about recording all your dumb moves at every step.

As you are a very experienced member on here rocketfrog, if you ever hear of an 81/2/3 RM465 or 250 for sale please let me know, as like I said previously I would love to build a replica Robin Rhodes/Grimshaw Suzuki #7 one day...............

I came across  a video a few months ago of Ray Vandenberg being presented with his old 465 from that era at his recent 50th birthday party a while back, now that was cool! He was totally shocked and in awe at the huge surprise. Unreal.

So as it turns out, I have been doing a bit of work on an RM465 at the moment. Not mine but a fellow enthusiast who I met thru my neighbour, also an enthusiast. I have been doing some general frame straightening and welding in exchange for earthmoving jobs.

Anyhoo in the course of working through a solution to fix a cracked swing arm (seems very common on these bikes) I wound up giving Anthony Gunter a call to discuss a similar Fix on his old RM400 which featured in an article of VMX magazine (favourite mag) issue 36 iirc. So there you go, through this forum I was able to contact a genuine Aussie MX legend and ask advice on the way forward repairing an old RM swinger since he had experience with the same sort of repair. This is waaaayy cool in my books, I have to admit If you asked me in the 80's if I should ring Anthony Gunter to talk about bikes I would look at you dumb and ask if you might give me the number for God so I might talk about the meaning of life while I am at it!

Definitely get along to Classic dirt if you can, you never know who you might bump into! So far I have met Craig Dack, Stephen Gall, Joel Robert and Ray Vandenberg at these turn outs and true gentlemen every one of them.

So if the RM 465 becomes available I will let you know, I don't think there are plans to ride it much since he has an RM500 for business and the 465 is pretty much eye candy for the cave. It will be a nice example when it is finished, there are lots of NOS parts and elbow grease going into this build so I cant wait to see how it turns out.

Cheers mate! I will definitely be interested any time down the track if the 465 does come up for sale or if you hear of any others available.

Anthony Gunter talking to one of us mere mortals! Who would have thought.......

Will hopefully talk to you in person at next years classic! Cheers

Wow great photos! (And memories!) Cheers Geoff!

If anybody has any more pics of Robin Rhodes that would be great if you could share them on here, hopefully might even have some photos of him and his #7 Mr MX plate....

I was using a shutter speed of 1/2000th of a second;
This would have been in the timeline of having just finished one stubby before picking up the next ;D
