PE 400

Does anyone have a suggestion for new shockers for a PE 400, Hagen Shocks ??

ol mate got a set for his PE 250 x  and I was half impressed...he got them in central vic somewhere...pretty good price...I  will see if I can get you a brand and contact

That would have been Darrell Groat at Moose Racing Products/Hagon Oz.
I personally would look for something more serviceable/rebuildable/tuneable than Hagons for a PE though. I guess it depends on if you are going to ride it very seriously or much at all?
I have a friend in UK who is in the process of getting either Reigers or Ohlins custom built specifically for his PE. He tried to go cheap first and get some second hand Works and Marzocchis off something else but they required too much mods to make right for his PE so hes bit the bullet for a new custom set.

I think they were hagons..the first set were too soft so he got the springs changed and they were ok from there. I rode it a few times and was impressed ( ihad one years ago with DE Carbon shox). LW is on the money tho, whats the intended use of this bike?? part time Vinduro? or regular ride?? or vmx? as we look at each of these in order...the cost goes up!!

Don't overlook having the originals rebuilt either. RAD does a pretty good deal on doing them and they will be better than any cheap new shocks that are not of correct design/spec.

I found the std ones had dubious damping characteristics and the springs were "unsatisfactory" to say the least...

If you go Hagon, beware the length. Mine came 410mm long, which had the bike sitting very high (with heavy springs). I got Them shortened to the standard 400mm and it sits well. But apparently the task of shortening them was most painful.

Spoke to RADS the other day and they quoted me $300 to rebuild the original PE shocks on my 400. They can rechrome and grind shafts in house which keeps cost down.

I realize that but if you address those areas they are going to better and more suited than many cheap shocks or shocks of incorrect design. These  long travel bikes need a proper gas shock with steel body, decent size shaft etc. The originals were that. Hardest part is finding good originals without bent shafts though. The plastic floating pistons with no piston guide bands (like other brands used)were prone to jamming.

Had a pair rebuilt 5 years ago by Rad and still going strong . Rodney has since modified his jig so they can be serviced .

Just an observation on my '82 PE250 is that the bushes on the shocks are different sizes left and right.  The drive side has larger bolts than the other side.  Anyone noticed this on their bike?
