husky frames: some questions

i'm considering to build an hybrid 4t powered bike\husky framed; need some info about husky frames.. i did some homework and looks like 75 - 78 frames are the same (for all these model-years and also for any displacement bike of the husky line)...do you confirm this? if not can you explain differences in these frames?

'75/76 is the same frame, '77 is a new frame with different geometry, suspension points & slightly different swing arm, 78 frame has the same geometry as '77 but has tapered head set bearings & different swing arm. Any will be good for your project. I have a couple of spare '76 frames.

i found these images in the net: up it's a 75\76 GP, bottom a 77 auto (sellers claims).

they look very similar indeed.. i'm particulary intersted on the yellow line measurement (from swingarm pivot hole to the seatbase tube), to understand how much tall will be the bike.. can any of you guy help me on this?

Both those frame in the photos are the same, Have a look at the rear shock mount which is the big giveaway, (77 auto/WR used the '76 GP frame), only the '77 CR250/390 got the new frame.  '77 CR frames are hard to come by. I have some spare '76 frames.

Ive got a spare rolling '76 chassis with forks, wheels etc.....

I put a XL500 engine in one of the above frames there's heaps of room but i had  to move the swingarm pivot point higher 30 or 40mm by memory to match the front sprocket shalf , I didn't want to cut the lower crandle.
I lost a bit of rear wheel  travel moving the swingarm pivot point higher because you can't have to much swingarm angle drop.
There's lots of work to be done the first stage is the first engine mount to make and keeping the front cog closest to the swingarm pivot and dead centre and getting a straight line to the rear sprocket etc.

the motor it's an XT250  OHC 2valve, isnt tall as the XR\XL500, of course; the swingarm pivot goes trough the rear crankase in the original yamaha setup; swingarm should be the KLX250 1980 alloy arm (width at the pivot side it's 195mm circa, hope the husky frame is not narrower then this)

shock mounts: so the "stud style" mounts are in the new frames, the clevis in the old version.. correct?

i guess that the yellow line in the upper picture it's greater in the new (stud mounts) frame.. correct?

any of you has the chance to take the yellow line (rough) measurements?

for those who offer a frame; i'm not so close to you (say half planet far).. anyway with the crazy prices asked in europe (and in the US too) for this kind of parts probably sourcing from downunder will be cheaper (actually my KLX arm comes from australia)

And before you move the sprocket too close to the swingarm, make sure you know what size sprocket you will need to use because if you come too close to the swingarm you will leave no room to go up a tooth on the sprocket if needed. Any kind of 'special builds'' you gotta keep thinking 'what if' and be thinking further down the track in the build as one change will affect another thing, so you should a lot of dry assembly and checking various things and thinking if this does not work, will i be able to rectify it later on?

It may be easier to just fit the xt motor to a klx frame, if you intend on using a klx swingarm.

yes actually should be the easiest option; also, looks like the Xt motor fits in the klx frame with minor mods required; only problem is to find a klx frame: it's a quite rare bike in europe.. but probably it's the way to go..

You should have minimal trouble fitting a XT250 motor into a mid 70's frame. Pictured below is a shot of my Husky 390AMX chassis fitted with a SR500 engine in 1981. Plenty of room for the 500 engine without having to any mods to the frame. Infact I refitted the Auto engine a few years ago, after buyinh a 1978 250CR frame that I will eventually use to rebuilt the 500 special around.

The top shock mounts on'75/'76 frames point down, on '77/'78 frames, they point up. 1979 is a new frame again & was the first of the top mount being a stud, it uses a different air box set up as well.

I have fitted a honda  xl 500 motor into a klx frame, there are issues...there is very little space for the carb (requiring a long droopy intake manifold), due to the frame back bone dropping down to the seat area. May be different with a 250. The bike was ...ok ( a lot of work), but given the choice id go husky, and ive ridden a white frame husky /xt 500 hybrid as well, a better option imo.

I have also fitted a xr200 motor into a klx, along with a modified xr 200 air box, all fitted easy, tightish at the top, miles of room down at the lower cradle/ towards the front of the motor.
