New to any dirt bikes

Hi.
I am 44yo and new to any form of dirt bikes. A work mate threw a vtr250 with dual sport tyres and asked me to have a go flat tracking and now hell bent on learning the craft. I have bought a PE250 which bottom end is good with a 38mm non standard on the pe, carb. I have never ridden 2 stroke so may it have mercy on me.
Over the last year been riding on practice n social rides at nepean and appin with the vtr but looking through the forum i really enjoy the rat race of finding parts and doing what has to be done on 2 strokes whether it takes ages or not. Riders have been friendly at the track and the bike talks i notice how much you love these things (vintage bikes). Im enjoying greatly and hope to find mech tips through the forum with view to myself posting something handy for all one day.

make sure the engine seals are new on that PE or it may come to a sudden stop at the end of the straight! nothing sorts a two stroke like dirt tracking. glad you've caught the bug...there is no known cure other than healthy doses of two stroke smoke and noise.

Forget the "scary 2-stroke" bit - It's a PE!
All bikes are intolerant of being treated without due respect, but an old PE will be more tolerant than most.

Thank you for the comments. I think when you buy a bike everyone pulls it apart to trust it. i will do this for sure and thanks 80-85 husky, definitely check on the seals. My friend also said to ride the thing and enjoy the ning ning ning racket it makes.

Tell us what number you run so we an say gday.
An old DT mate of mine says that a dirt track bike should not be able to idle by its self, because when you throttle off at the end of the straight it will run lean and maybe seize. so adjust the idle to nothing and when you throttle off it will run rich enough to cool and lubricate the exh port / piston.

Fantastic choice in the PE i have two 80 250T and a 83 175D they are very reliable,  just keep up the maintenance, run them on castor just because it smells great and reminds you of the 80s. What model is your PE?

There are a few fast PE's around, i think one won KON classic or charity event a few years back..

Thanks brett. Your mates advice with no idle means i would be on the throttle and feather the clutch to get power? Would have to run the premix at say 30:1. Ive read ex racers premix at this ratio through their life. I have number 42 so yeah dont forget to say gday.
My pe is a 78 250c. I like it but the 77 with the alloy tank is beautiful. Also that suzuki blue on the tank after 79 is nice also. Im sure other marques have similar changes to models and have their following too.Thanks pete.

I would say that your RPM will never get too low at nepean to warrant stalling or feathering, - thats if your in the right gear....
