82 83 cr250

Just got my hands on both and 82 and 83 Cr250, the 83 was running (just) water pump casing shot, engine shot (bottom end/top end) rest of the bike is complete.
The 82 I was told is mostly complete but I haven't got all of it from the previous owner(just engine and frame so far).
So which is the better or rarest one to put most of my resto effort into and should I just devcon the waterpump covers or is there a better option.

I would say that the '83 is the go, i asked the same question myself with the 480's and was told the '83.Better suspension/handling for one.  Generally devcon is the go for the waterpump. I am experimenting with a two part araldite but its to early to know the result.

Definately the '83. Nearly everything is changed and improved on the '83. I raced both the '82 and '83 back in the day and the '83 was clearly better. It is a great bike. Cheers

if you want to get rid of one im after an 82 cr250 to go with the 82 yz250 give us a yell if you dont need her  ;D

Hi mate unless you have axcess to ally water case be careful on what you do
both bikes  had originaly magnesium case and the rot big time i have had 81 82 bikes in 125 an 250s they all big power and great to look at but geeeez they cost a truck load to do up

have to see what turns up with the 82 but I think that the 83 will be far easier to start with. Should have it running by the end of september, pick up barrel and piston from being rebored 2moro and gaskets today. then just have to paint frame and put it back together.
Have you guys used a new style piston pin and clips (slightly different)with a new old stock piston ?
I have new old stock clips (they look like similiar to a key ring ring) but no new old stock pin (straight edge - new ones have bevelled edge)

Are you running a Honda piston or an aftermarket one? The circlips you describe are not genuine.

For your case drama's JB WELD is far superior to Devcon.JB handles well over 200degC.Machines far better than Devcon to.The circlip are  "spiral locks" painfully had to get in and out but the never come out.

Where do you live Young Pup?  Its not Simon is it, who races with us at Fairbairn Park (and who's a mere stripling at 32)?  I know he just got hold of two '83 CR250s (I thought) to do up and race with us in the old buggers class (ok, old bikes class). If so, up and at them mate, we look forward to you putting it to us.

I race an '83 CR250 at Fairbairn and elsewhere, and can guarantee that they are a good all round mx bike. Good power, good handling (despite what ADB said about them in the day), very reliable.  Parts cost, but you're worth it aren't you?

Yes it is Simon, hopefully I will be running with you guys next meet. Dennis will be stoked to have another bike in the class. He was sooo keen to get me to ride his KTM last round. I like my modern KTMs and his handled very good so I am hoping that the CR will be even better. Frame sould be powdercoated next week, have most of my engine parts. So I just need to detail the other parts and put it back together.

if you need any help simon, give me a buzz at home on 6161 9325.  have a workshop manual if you need it.  another regular on this site, bruce mcfarland of red devil racing, got my pump cover fixed so could advise on that if needed.  did a good job too.  good tip tho is to drain water between rides, remove the cocktail so to speak.  good luck with the resto job too - they always end up more work than you expect so no beating round the bush - get stuck in.

hope to catch you at the heaven race at fairbairn?  or next club gig.

frame powder coated engine is in (less water pump cover - waiting on seal kit)
serviced the swing arm bearings and waiting for a chain slider before I can put it on.
I have 2 shocks the 83 shock had a oil leak @ hose fitting, Tightened but don't know how much oil is left in it.The 82 shock is shorter but I think I have a linkage (steel one) to suit.
Should have another set of wheels soon and will make a good set.
Head set bearings on order should have them this week and then I can put the front end on. 
I will most likely put it back together run it in and then look at suspension set up and general improvements. 
I was watching your 86 on ebay looks like a good bike/buy
So will you be pushing to go pre 90 ?
