rl250 smoking diagnosis

my rl250 has started smoking a fair bit just lately. Still has great compression, starts first kick, seems to run fine. Ive sprayed some inox/wd around spark plug, head bolts, head gasket, base gasket etc etc,  but no difference or sign of a leak. I'm thinking a crank seal? Any other symptoms or things i can check?

check the condition of your gearbox oil for signs of contamination.  if it smells like fuel or is milky thats not a good sign. could just be spooge being burnt in the pipe. remove pipe and give it a good burn out with an oxy.

I'll check the gearbox oil tomorrow.  Don't think it would be the pipe, that got a cleanout not too long ago. Thanks

Monitor trans oil level, if it drops its a mains seal on primary drive side

if it's running as good as it ever does perhaps check the oil pump cable isn't hanging up a bit & not letting the pump drop back down as you close the throttle. Is the plug as oily as the exhaust indicates--if not, then i'd still be thinking pipe & tail pipe muffler as they [the type of two strokes that have quitening packing along the inner walls] get quite soaked throughout & smoke bad when hot on a road trip. Replace the gearbox oil with something that gives off a distinctive smell as an experiment to see if it shows up out the exhaust---was just a thought. Cheers.

RLs are premix no pump.

Oil can only be from two sources. gearbox or the premix.
have you changed the brand of oil lately? perhaps drain tank and refill with a fresh mix. This could save the spanner work as primary drive seals are not the easiest to get at.
remove the silencer and check for wet oil. if its present there it will also be in the chamber just a bit crustier that will burn if it gets hot enough. A good burn and a blast of oxygen will have all the old carbon burnt to ash in no time. I stick my pipe in a 44 gallon drum and stick the header out the bottom. once the pipe is nice and  hot i give it a blast of oxygen or just compressed air and you can hear the harmonics of the pipe  working and see the hot ring going up the pipe as it burns the carbon. let it cool and give it a few taps and all the crud gets shaken out.Lots of crud.

Stew is correct, the oil level will drop if the gearbox is the source. the smoke also smells like a hot car engine not two smoke oil. Splitting the engine is required to get access to that seal and while your in there replace the centre gasket as that can be another place that can leak but its rare for a centre gasket to go in an old suzuki but it is possible.

Definitely doesn't smell like 2 stroke. The smoke is very white and has only just started the last ride or so. Fresh tank of fuel was the first thing i did.

 I'm thinking the engine is getting split open. Anyone in Brissie with a flywheel puller i can borrow today?

Yes on Bris southside. Just checked in the puller bucket and I do have a 30 x 1.5 male RH thread puller. If you think it will fit you are welcome to bring it over and I will remove it for you . I will send a PM if you want to do it that way.
