VTR have the more sensible rule of "No rear disc brakes or upside down forks" instead of an arbitrary date cut off.

I don't think so John, I thought it was 87 or later that KTM adopted rear disc brakes, could be wrong though?

KTM, along with Kawasaki, first brought out rear discs in 1986.

The VTR rules are technology based like the Evo class in VMX is/was. I don't particularly agree, but they don't offend me, and it doesn't really matter for non-competitive events.

Yeah, I guess that's the relevant point......non competitive.
When things get competitive things get serious.
The whole idea of VTR is for fun, no timed events, more of a social event if I understand it correctly.

So where would a 1984 KTM 495 fit in? Pre '85, drum brakes (which fit's Victorian vinduro rules) but with USD forks as standard equipment. There are many bikes just outside the rules in Vic (those '85-'88 Huskies) but if you use the no rear disc, no USD forks ruling, it leaves a legit pre '85 bike out in the cold.

I reckon you'd be right to go with VERI Mick. Afterall, those forks are pre85 and that is the only hard fast rule in Vic.

VERi works under a Pre 85 schedule, as decided by majority vote of club members at the last AGM, so on the face of it a 1988 model would not be eligible. Anyone with specific questions about VERi eligibility should contact the club president or a committee member.

There are other clubs in Vic running vintage enduro events, but I don't know the details of how they operate, though it probably wouldn't be too hard to find out.

No idea what the reason is evo550, that is where VTR have chosen to, as Nathan says, "draw the line in the sand", their decision as to what constitutes a vintage bike from a modern bike and trying to include as many bikes and members as they can without excluding bikes that are clearly (in their eyes) not modern I guess.

I guess it can be argued what makes a bike modern  vs vintage and that will be a subject of debate for many years to come, I don't believe VERI have it wrong, nor do I believe that VTR have it wrong, I'll abide by the rules of the club I  choose to be a member of and live with it.
If I choose to ride in Victoria, my home state, I will simply take my "eligible" 1982 PE175, however in NSW I will have the choice of either the PE or my '88 Husky 400WR, or both!
