Long(ger) range kdx200 fuel tank

There were a few bikes that ran out of fuel a Harrow this year and l was very close to empty myself at the second fuel stop. I had read somewhere in internet land that someone had fitted an '83-'85 kdx250 tank to a '83-'85 200 so l thought if the 250 carries a bit more fuel it'll be worth the effort.

I didn't measure the actual capacities of the tanks but only the differences.

The 250 tank holds around 2 1/4 litres more than the larger later model '85 200 tank. The '86-'88 200 tank holds around 2 1/2 litres more than the '85 200 tank but wont fit onto the '83-85 frame.

The front mount on the 250 tank lines up well on the 200 frame and l used 2 rubber insulators on the frame. As the 250 tank is longer the 200 rear mount went and l used a broken exhaust rubber mount to support the rear of the tank. A washer under the mount got the height right so the tank has 4 points of contact/support with the frame



The 250 tank sits around 20 mm further back than the 200 tank at the rear so l took 20 mm of the front of the seat trimming off and shaping the foam with the angle grinder. l kept the seat sitting firmly against the tank for extra support to the tank as I've just used a cable tie on the rear mount until l can work out something better.
Clearance around the exhaust for the 250 tank is simular to the 200 tank.

If l could sew l would have trimmed the front of the seat cover to match the shortened seat but the excess gathered well enough under the seat.

So how many actual liters did you have before and what have you got now? Sorry i do not know KDX capacities so "2 &1/4 and 2&1/2" more does not mean much to me. I think Clarke make tanks for these bikes too.

Kawasaki quote 12.5 litres but l just needed to know how much more fuel was in the 250 tank l had than the 200 tank l was using.

OK so you have gone from 12.5 to 14.25-14.50L. That is a good size, would need to be a big loop to run out with that much.

If you've got a kdx200 and you want to pick up a couple of extra litres of fuel, the 250 tank is a straight forward fit.

But its sometimes unavoidable on longer rides aluminium hiking fuel canisters work well for an extra couple of litres but if you can afford a bigger tank or find one that fits all the better good work Geoff

I have done a lot of crazy things, my mind boggles that I am still alive,,,so far
But I wouldn't do that,,ah well unless,,,,, how much does it pay
KDX has raised a good piont, and done a good look solution.
What other options are there, Top of the rear guard, front of the triples with the head light out further.
Bigger tank is the go if it comes together like this one has.

I know we often do things we shouldn't (me included) but Aluminium canisters would be worse to be carrying on your body, it would be a solid item to fall on.
Strapped to your bike would be okay
