My vehicle's identification/compliance plate is missing from my vehicle, can I purchase a new one?

Unfortunately, once a vehicle's identification/compliance plate has been lost it cannot be replaced. However, provided acceptable proof can be supplied showing the vehicle had previously been registered in Australia, the vehicle is still able to be considered for re-registration.

Further information regarding missing identification/compliance plates can be found in section 3 of the AIS code of practice.

http://www.tmr.qld.gov.au/Safety/Vehicle-standards-and-modifications/Vehicle-modifications/Frequently-asked-questions-vehicle-standards-and-modifications.aspx#complianceplate

Check with your state transport  department for what hoops you will need to jump through.

First step is to ring your local rego authority (RMS, VicRoads, whoever), and ask them if they have any record of it.
If it's been rego'd anywhere in the country in the last 10-15(?) years, it will be on the national database.
If that doesn't work, then ring the other state rego authorities and see if it is on their old databases.

If that doesn't work, then try Suzuki Australia. I've seen a couple of letters from Yamaha Australia saying 'this vehicle was sold with a compliance plate', which is enough for the rego people. I assume Suzuki will be similarly accommodating.
The good thing about telling the truth is that you don't have to remember what you said.

Not sure if this helps but I just registered my 72 BSA in Perth which didn't come with a compliance plate, period.  Obviously they were imported into Australia originally and all the assessor was interested was the engine number.  He assumed it didn't have a frame number, which it has.

Probably a bit different than a situation where the bike had a compliance plate.

You can search any bike vin number on the ppsr website costs $4 ( personal property securities register) or this is what they told me

If the vehicle was imported prior to August 1989 then it would not be subject to the act as the Motor Vehicle Standards Act 1989 did not come in to affect until August 1989.  Our electronic records did not commence until 1991.  Therefore, the vehicle may also have also fallen into this time period.

If you have any further queries please contact the Department’s Imports Team by e-mail at [email protected], by fax on 02-6274 6013 or phone on 1800 815 272.

I will have the same issue as I have a 1974 Suzuki RV125 with an old rego plate front and rear but no compliance plate.

I have checked with PPSR website and nothing comes up for this bike.

The 1976 Suzuki RV has a compliance plate??

Dear Mr Hornby

The attached letter explains that there is no record of this motorcycle being issued a Vehicle Import Approval.

The requirement to have an approval did not commence until August 1989 so the bike may have been imported prior to this time.

Print the attached letter and present to your registration authority.  It may assist with the registration process.

Compliance plates did not come out on bikes til 75-76. So getting any bike rego'd (even MX bikes) before then is pretty straight forward. Each state is different but usually you require minimum of lights, horn and mirror/s. Not all states require blinkers.
