Haha, put up to it by Briggo, Ole & Ivan. Fell off on the dewy grass on the infield and burnt his arse . Classic, what a character.

Craigy told me the story, said the cops were in on it, chased him into the pits after he dropped the bike?

Yeah, def a set up but bloody funny. Reg was at the Showground reunion last year and got the shits because everyone said they didn't recognise him with his gear on. Funny bastard.

Could a speedway rider explain here, please ... all about the tangs I've seen
over the years; on the peaks of the helmets?  Robbie Blackadder has one
in the fifth frame.
I would love to know all about them ... with thanks

It's what's known as a "flicker", a spring loaded visor device operated by the tang you mentioned, BB.

More great photos TTezza. The mierson sprint motor in the godden frame was interesting. That was a combination that I didn't think would exist. My brother chris raced one of clarries dohc creations for a while. While I have the utmost respect for him in making his own engine the reality was that they were a terrible thing. It never made anything like competitive horsepower and the engineering left a lot to be desired.

Thanks Foss,
Dumb me ... I thought it was some sort of targeting bulls-eyething,
to keep the eye on the arc of oval - when the bike is sideways. D'oh

One I had in the 70s had a couple of slots cut into the outside edges of a squarish helmet peak with a little L at the end. Plastic visor could be pulled fwd and down thus giving another visor in front of the goggles. Was attached to a couple of small rubber bands, when it got dirty a quick fwd at the base would see it retract under the helmet visor and the clean goggles would be the result. I needed it a fair bit when getting passed. Briggs talks about the power of the roost in the corners at the World Longtrack champs and how it would catch the new comers out. Think Barry's son had a big off as a result of it at his first big Longtrack meeting.

A rare beast captured yesterday at the Maitland Motorfest. One of Clarrie Miersons specials. Note the sunburst finning on the crankcases, he cast his own patterns.
